Chapter 1 A Hellish Beginning

Jing'an Town, Xiaoyao Village.

A drizzle of rain enveloped the entire village. Apart from the occasional barking of dogs, most villagers stayed at home busy with their work.

Qiao Yunxin hurried home, followed by the village doctor Zhao. The two of them hurried on their way and finally stopped in front of three thatched houses on the side of Funiu Mountain.

Qiao Yunxin pushed open the fence door and leaned aside to let the old doctor go in first, while anxiously saying, "Doctor Zhao, please hurry up, my mother is still unconscious."

[What are you in such a hurry for? Isn't it here? ] Doctor Zhao stood still, took a few breaths, straightened his clothes, and then lifted the straw curtain of the main room and walked into the main hall.

The thatched house was full of leaks, and the mud on the walls was mottled and fell off in the autumn wind. There was not even a few decent pieces of furniture in the house.

Too poor!

I guess the mice wouldn't even look at it when they pass by!

Now that the head of the family is ill, the days ahead will probably be even worse.

The curtain of the west room was lifted, and a sturdy young woman walked out. Although it was just after Double Ten, her face was filled with sorrow. When she saw Doctor Zhao, she forced a smile and said, "Uncle Zhao, you are here. My mother just woke up!" Then she invited the person in.

Doctor Zhao looked up and saw a woman who was not very old sitting on the kang, and a row of people standing beside the kang. Seeing him come in, they all looked over.

The woman seemed to have just recovered from her shock and said to him weakly: "Sorry to trouble you again, Doctor Zhao. I am fine. I just tripped and the children made a fuss. I will ask the eldest brother to take you back in a while."

Qiao Yunxin said anxiously, "Mom, since Doctor Zhao is here, let him check your pulse. He scared everyone just now."

Upon hearing this, Qiao Xin glanced at Haodaer, her anxious look could not be faked!

Forget it, let him be for now!

Doctor Zhao sat down on a stool nearby, stretched out his fingers, and took the patient's pulse naturally, which was obviously a familiar action. He kept talking to the doctor, "It's not good to be afraid of seeing a doctor. It doesn't hurt to see a doctor, so that the children can feel at ease. If you are worried about the consultation fee, you can talk about it later. Anyway, your family has owed it for many times."

After a round of consultation, Doctor Zhao breathed a sigh of relief and said, "It's not a big deal. The liver yang is too high and the emotions are too excited, which caused the dizziness. Just rest more. But the body is seriously damaged. You have to find a way to replenish it. I won't prescribe tonic herbs. Just buy some eggs and eat the meat and drink the soup to nourish it slowly. 】

Qiao Yunxin and his wife Xu nodded repeatedly and said, "Thank you, Doctor Zhao!"

Doctor Zhao packed up his medical box and left without staying any longer.

Qiao Yunxin then sent him out, and when he was a little further away from home, he couldn't help but say, "Uncle Zhao, does my mother really not need to take medicine? You see, we can't afford the expensive ones, can you prescribe two sets of cheap ones? If that doesn't work, can you write a prescription and I can go to the back mountain to look for some!"

Doctor Zhao frowned and scolded, "Nonsense, how can you wander around in the deep back mountains? Your mother fainted from the stimulation, but in the end, her body is still very weak. Look at your family's situation, they can't even eat enough, don't even think about taking tonic medicine. In the future, just eat some meat honestly, it's better than anything else!"

Qiao Yunxin nodded in agreement, then stretched out a hand, in which lay five copper coins: "Uncle Zhao, you see, you know my mother's temper. Take this money first, so you can give an explanation to my aunt."

Doctor Zhao sighed helplessly. He remembered his wife's unforgiving mouth and said, "Okay, I'll keep it for now. I'll take the rest when I have more money in the future."

【Why!】

.........

Qiao Xin rubbed her swollen head and stared at her grandchildren and daughters-in-law impatiently. She was extremely upset. But she couldn't involve others too much.

She waved her hand, chasing people away like chickens: [Go away, let me rest for a while, and do whatever I need to do! ]

[Mother, I'll stay with you, shall I?] The speaker was the second daughter-in-law, Zhang, who was only nineteen years old, with a pretty face but a small body. She was usually polite and fussy, but generally she was a good person.

Although she thought that the old lady fell ill at a wrong time, she thought that the old lady was usually quite kind to them. Now that she was ill, she had to do what she should do. She couldn't be accused of being unfilial.

[If I say I don’t need it, then I don’t need it. I don’t need to look after the kids or do yard work? Why are you watching over me?]

Qiao Xin tried her best to imitate her original body's tone and spoke to this scheming daughter-in-law.

[Okay, eldest daughter-in-law, go make lunch. There is a piece of meat in the hanging basket. Let’s stew it with the cabbage at noon to make the child full.]

Xu was a little hesitant, "Mom, shouldn't we save the meat for Uncle Er to eat when he comes back?"

[Don't keep it, it will stink if you keep it. Just do it when I tell you to, why are you talking so much nonsense? ] It was just two taels of meat. The original body was cooked three times and there was still one and a half taels left. Qiao Xin was really powerless to complain!

This family really had the hard life in their bones. Except for the eldest son and his wife who were born with big frames and looked very strong, but in fact they had very little flesh, the rest of the people, regardless of gender, age or status, were not much different from matchsticks.

Two meals of thin coarse grain a day. It was a miracle that people were still alive and not sick. Especially the grandchildren, who had big heads and thin bodies, staggered when they walked. She couldn't help but wonder, in the next second, their thin necks would break if they exerted a little force, how could they support such big heads? Long-term malnutrition made the children thin and bulging. They looked no different from refugees in some places.
