Chapter 169 A Battle of Wits

After they finished speaking, they looked at each other and laughed.

Gu Sang and Zhang Shi were chatting inside the house, completely unaware that Zhao Wenhua was weeding outside. Li Shi had been waiting at the door for a long time, but finally dared not wait any longer, because she was afraid that Zhao Wenhua would get angry and lock her out, and then she would never see her child again.

"Hey, what are you two whispering about inside? Come and help me! All these vegetables have been picked. If you don't come and help me, they'll all rot and become worthless!" Li shouted from outside. Hearing this, Gu Sang and Zhang quickly put down what they were doing and ran towards the door.

"What's wrong with you? Why are you working so early in the morning? Aren't you tired?" Li asked Zhao Wenhua with some doubt.

"Mom, don't worry about me. You go and pick the vegetables now. I'll come and help you with the work when I'm done."

"Okay, okay." Li nodded and then began to pick vegetables.

Meanwhile, Zhao Wenhua wasn't idle either. At home, he used a hoe to carefully remove each and every vegetable. Zhao Wenhua dug three large pits and then poured the vegetables into them one by one. As he dug the pits, he silently recited something to himself.

Mother, don't worry, I will not let you down. I will never let you be sad or upset because of me again. I will never let you be sad or upset because of my affairs.

Seeing that Gu Changgeng had already dug up all the vegetables on the ground, Li Shi continued to wash the pile of dishes and chopsticks, while Zhao Wenhua was concentrating on digging the pit.

After Li finished cleaning up, Zhao Wenhua had almost leveled the pit. When Li saw that Zhao Wenhua had leveled the pit, she said to Gu Changgeng with a happy face, "Old man, look at all these vegetables. Wenhua actually leveled them all this afternoon. That must have been very hard work. This child is really a diligent child."

"Hehe, Wenhua has always been very hardworking. We all know that without you having to tell us," Gu Changgeng said with some pride. He knew that over the years, he, Li Shi, and Zhao Wenhua had all earned a lot of money thanks to Zhao Wenhua's hard work. This money was enough for Zhao Wenhua to live a life free from worries about food and drink, so that he wouldn't have to work hard every day to earn a meager wage to supplement the family income, as he used to.

"That's right, my Wenhua is the most diligent. If it were any other man, he definitely wouldn't be able to do this kind of physical work," Li said with a smile, giving Zhao Wenhua a thumbs up with a proud look on her face.

Looking at Li Shi and Zhao Wenhua, Gu Changgeng felt a sense of satisfaction. Life was getting better and better. Although their son, Zhao Wuhua, was away making a living and couldn't be by his side, his wife and son were with him. This was what he wanted to see. All this happiness was thanks to the help of these relatives, which made Gu Changgeng very content and gratified.

Meanwhile, Zhao Wenhua was digging a hole while watching Li pick the vegetables and put them in the basket. Of course, they encountered many people along the way, and these people couldn't help but glance at the vegetables in Li's hands. This made Li even happier.

Li and Gu Changgeng worked for over two hours to harvest all the vegetables. After Li finished harvesting, Zhao Wenhua also finished, and Li couldn't wait to run into the kitchen.

As soon as Li entered the kitchen, she saw Gu Sang cooking, while Gu Changgeng sat next to the stove, looking at the vegetables in the pot.

"Hey Sang, what brings you to the kitchen today? Are you cooking at this hour? Are you planning to do something bad? If you're planning something bad, I advise you not to. If you're planning something bad, then I advise you to take a break now. Otherwise, if you get caught, we won't be responsible, you know?"

Li said this with a hint of sarcasm, and the smile on her face when she said it looked particularly cunning.

"Hmph!" Gu Sang snorted coldly, then ignored Li Shi. Seeing this, Li Shi stopped talking and walked directly to Gu Changgeng, saying, "Old man, today I want to make you some braised pork. I just talked to your wife, and we'll send some over to her and Wenhua tonight. What do you think?"

"Great! That's wonderful news. I'll wait to eat then." Gu Changgeng said happily upon hearing this. Gu Sang was also very happy to hear Gu Changgeng agree with her, and then she began to prepare the ingredients.

Li stood beside Gu Sang for a while, and seeing that Gu Sang had no intention of paying attention to her, she started picking a fight again. "Oh dear, Sang, look at you, a grown woman, how can you let your mother-in-law do such rough work? Isn't that a bit too unfair to Wenhua? I think you should go back to your own room and rest properly."

"Hmph, no need for you to trouble yourself. These are all minor matters. Besides, my health is almost fully recovered now. And look, I'm not doing this by myself. Wenhua is here too. Wenhua, let's hurry up and finish this, then go to the village entrance to call your father and the others back for dinner."

Gu Sang looked at Li Shi with an indifferent expression and then turned around to leave the kitchen. However, Li Shi had no intention of letting Gu Sang off so easily. She stepped in front of Gu Sang and said.

"Oh, Sang, how can you be so insensible? You won't even let me do such a small thing? Let me tell you, if you don't agree to my request today, I won't let you out."

Li Shi looked at Gu Sang's back and said loudly. Gu Sang stopped and turned around, looking coldly at Li Shi, and said, "Mother, what do you mean by this? The vegetables have already been washed. If you don't mind the dirt, then wash them yourself. I don't have time to waste here with you."

"Oh dear, you child, how can you be so ungrateful? I've traveled such a long way through the mountains for half a day, and I'm so tired, yet you won't even let me do this little thing? Are you doing this on purpose, Sang? Let me tell you, you have to let me do it today. I just don't believe that I'm not as good as you at cooking."

Li said stubbornly, and then snatched the vegetable basket from Gu Sang's hand. Gu Sang became anxious and shouted, "Mother, are you crazy? Hurry up and give me the basket!" Gu Sang said excitedly, and then reached out to snatch the basket back from Li.
