Chapter Eight: New Clothes - A Beginning and a Curse

The whole family was very happy. They had sold almost everything they had brought to town, including the fish that they initially thought would be hard to sell, and at a good price. The sour and delicious candied fruit that had been put aside was sold after Gu Sang and the shopkeeper had a conversation. They had already agreed that when the candied fruit was made again, it would be delivered to Yipinju.

"The shopkeeper is a good person."

After hearing these words, Li kept chanting "Amitabha".

After hearing these words, Gu Sang and Li Rong exchanged glances but said nothing.

Merchants prioritize profit, a timeless truth. The fact that the shopkeeper accepted all of this indicates that their goods were worth the price. Moreover, the shopkeeper was indeed a good person, straightforward and easygoing, making for a pleasant cooperation.

However, Gu Sang and Li Rong didn't say much. After Gu Sang got the money, she took her family to the cloth shop. Instead of buying fabric to make clothes for herself, she bought two new outfits for each of them.

"This...this is unacceptable!"

When Li saw her eldest daughter's extravagant gesture, she was immediately stunned. She then hurriedly waved her hand and said, "Sangsang, if you want to wear new clothes, just tell your mother, and I'll make them for you. These ready-made clothes are too expensive!"

Li's heart was pounding. She was terrified that if she saw her eldest daughter like this again, she would be scared to death!

This is really too much money!

After hearing Li's words, Gu Sang glanced at Da Wa and the others, and indeed saw that their previously happy expressions had been suppressed after Li's explanation.

Even the youngest, Si Ya, kept her mouth shut and didn't say a word.

She's so sensible it breaks my heart.

Gu Sang took Li's hand and smiled gently.

“Mother, have you forgotten what I just said? We are different now than before. In the past, we depended on others for our livelihood, but not now. If we earn money but don’t satisfy ourselves first, what’s the use of earning money? Mother, don’t you think that makes sense?”

Her motto is that if you have money, you should first improve your quality of life; otherwise, what's the point of working so hard?

Li Rong naturally wouldn't gossip about the Gu family's affairs, but after hearing Gu Sang's words, she felt that Gu Sang was right. The first thing a person should do in life is to be true to themselves.

This girl is young, but her thinking is so clear-headed, which is rare.

Gu Sang's words left Li speechless.

It's a subconscious feeling that things shouldn't be this way, but for a moment I can't quite tell which is right.

"But...but there's so much money..."

"If my daughter spent it, it means she's confident she can earn it back."

After Gu Sang finished speaking, she tilted her head slightly and looked at Li Shi.

That charming innocence unique to young girls made it impossible for Madam Li to refuse.

After a long pause, Li sighed helplessly.

"Then...then buy it. Mother doesn't want it. Mother has clothes to wear."

Li Shi didn't want Gu Sang to buy it for her younger siblings, but when she thought of the children's longing eyes, she couldn't bring herself to ask.

Gu Sang glanced at the only clothes Li Shi could wear, a light gray dress that was the one that the two previous bodies had discarded and that Li Shi had picked up and altered.

Ms. Li said she had it?

Gu Sang didn't believe it.

However, at this moment, Gu Sang did not argue with Li Shi. She turned around and started talking to the shopkeeper, telling him all the height requirements for her family members and letting her younger siblings choose first. After they finished buying their clothes, Gu Sang also chose two outfits. Finally, she pointed to a light blue dress, a pale yellow dress, and a light green short jacket hanging on the wall and asked the shopkeeper to pick them up.

When it came time to pay, they discovered that the clothes had cost a whopping four taels of silver.

Seeing that Gu Sang was a straightforward person, the shopkeeper gave her several more feet of fabric, which made Li Shi extremely happy.

Gu Sang didn't say anything. This Li family was afraid of being poor, so she couldn't change her ways in a short time. She shouldn't be in a hurry.

After buying clothes, I also bought some kitchen necessities and seasonings, which took up another 100 grams.

Seeing Li's pale face filled with heartache, Gu Sang was afraid that if she continued buying, she would faint on the spot. So she wisely called a halt, and the family happily went home.

After returning home, Gu Sang gave the two sets of clothes she had bought to Li Shi.

“My…mine?” Li was stunned for a moment, looking at Gu Sang in surprise.

When did Da Ya buy these clothes? How come she didn't know?

"Mother, no, Sangsang, why don't you return it? Mother has clothes here, I can mend and patch them up and still wear them..."

Gu Sang didn't want to hear Li Shi say these things anymore, so she frowned and then asked with a smile, "Does Mother think that our whole family is wearing new clothes while you, as an elder, have to wear old clothes?"

If others saw this, what would they say about the five siblings?

Li also realized this, and was immediately speechless.

Gu Sang knew that Li's temperament couldn't be changed in an instant, so she wasn't in a hurry.

The clothes were placed in Li's hands.

"Mother, no matter how much I say, you will still feel uneasy. But I promise you, our family will get better step by step, and it will get better and better in the future, so please don't worry too much, okay?"

It's just two new clothes, so there's really no need for that.

Li lowered her head slightly, her eyes filled with tears.

After a long pause, he nodded vigorously.

"Okay, Mom will wear it! Our family will definitely get better and better in the future!"

Upon hearing these words, Gu Sang immediately smiled.

"That's right, Mother. Our family will only get better and better in the future, so you don't need to worry about those things."

After calming Li down, she glanced at another green-blue long gown, thought for a moment, and then took it to Li Rong's house.

Just as they arrived at Li Rong's doorstep, they unexpectedly encountered Madam Yang again.

Is Zhang Shi sick? He does nothing all day but stand at the door and stare at people passing by?

Others didn't seem to notice, but Gu Sang felt uncomfortable.

She specially changed into new clothes and was carrying a small bundle containing a long gown for Li Rong. When Zhang saw this, she was furious.

"Stop right there!"

When Zhang saw Gu Sang's new clothes, she was stunned for a moment.

I don't quite understand. How come the third son's family, who were all kicked out of the house with nothing, still have new clothes to wear?

Besides, the third wife has new clothes to wear, so why shouldn't they send some to the grandmother herself?

"Where did you get these clothes?! Explain yourself! Why are you allowed to wear new clothes? Why didn't you send them to me?!"
