Chapter 15 First Entrance School
The morning light is just breaking, the sun is rising, and the morning breeze blows across my face, mixed with the chill of winter.
After Su Yuan had breakfast, he rushed to Baichuan Academy with his book box on his back.
Baichuan Academy was located in the innermost courtyard of West Street. It was jointly funded by Wang Zhixing and two other scholars.
It is very close to Su Yuan’s residence and can be reached in seven or eight minutes on foot.
Baichuan Academy.
Su Yuan followed a group of students into the school. She looked around and found that most of the students were around eleven or twelve years old.
She stood out from the crowd.
Fortunately, she was mentally prepared and didn't feel embarrassed.
Children in the Fengqi Dynasty usually entered private schools at the age of ten and took the examination for status as a student at the age of thirteen.
At her age, most people would have failed several grades. Most people would give up after failing the exam three times in a row.
Su Yuan sighed.
He straightened his back, grabbed a doorman, asked about the teachers' office locations, and walked over.
As soon as he walked to the door of the gentlemen's office, Su Yuan ran into Wang Zhixing.
She was surprised and said:
"Auntie Wang, no, I should call you Mr. Wang now. Where should the students go to study today?"
Wang Zhixing smiled and greeted:
"Come with me. Our Baichuan Academy is divided into three classes: Tiandi, Xuan. The Xuan class is for young children who have just enrolled, the Di class is for students who have been enrolled for two years, and the Tian class is for students who are about to take the Tongsheng exam."
"Although you are a new student, your knowledge is far superior to others. You should go to the Tianzi class. I happen to be giving a lecture there, so let's go together."
Su Yuan nodded: "Okay."
Tianzi class.
Wang Zhixing brought Su Yuan in, and the classroom, which had been noisy just now, suddenly became as quiet as a chicken.
The students stood up and saluted Wang Zhixing:
"Hello, sir."
Wang Zhixing nodded solemnly:
"Well, sit down, everyone."
"Yes, sir." The students sat down attentively.
Wang Zhixing then spoke:
"These are new students, you should get along well with each other."
After saying that, he winked at Su Yuan:
"Su Yuan, please go sit in the empty seat on the right."
Su Yuan nodded in agreement.
He walked to the empty table, unloaded his bookcase and sat down.
Next, Wang Zhixing began to lecture.
Su Yuan listened very carefully throughout the class without taking notes.
She has a photographic memory and can remember things after hearing them once.
"Okay, school is over, you guys take a break."
After Wang Zhixing finished his lecture, he took the book and left.
Su Yuan heard that school was over, but before she could move, she was poked from behind and someone called her:
"Hi, what's your name?"
Su Yuan turned around, saw the person who greeted her, and raised her eyebrows in surprise.
The girl in front of me has a baby face and a sweet appearance.
She was wearing a light pink brocade robe with roses embroidered on the collar and cuffs, making her look like a conspicuous bag.
According to Su Yuan, women in this dynasty generally dressed simply and elegantly, and it was rare to see them dressed like this.
But what surprised Su Yuan was not her clothes or her appearance.
But the woman looked about the same age as her.
Late for school?
Or too many repeat grades?
Su Yuan was guessing in his heart, but his expression remained calm.
She said calmly:
"My name is Su Yuan."
The baby-faced girl introduced herself with a smile on her lips:
"My name is Meng Yunqiao. You are also like me, failing the exams repeatedly and finally ending up studying with a bunch of little brats, right?"
Su Yuan glanced at her, pursed his lips and said:
"No, my family is poor and I don't have money to go to school."
Meng Yunqiao didn't expect it was because of this reason, she quickly apologized:
"I'm sorry, I, I don't know."
She thought that her classmates who could attend private school all came from wealthy families like her.
At the very least, we were a well-off family and I never thought it was because of poverty.
Su Yuan curled his lips slightly, smiled faintly and said:
"It doesn't matter. I'm not poor now."
After hearing this, Meng Yunqiao breathed a sigh of relief and patted his chest and said:
"Oh, that's fine, that's fine."
Then gossip started:
"You were assigned to the Tianzi class right after you entered school. You must be a very talented person, otherwise the school would not have allowed you to skip a class."
"Did you learn on your own, or did an elder at home teach you?"
Su Yuan thought about it seriously and said:
"I went to a private school when I was young, and later I taught myself."
"But I'm not as talented as you say. At most, I just barely meet the threshold, so I was assigned to the Tianzi class."
After hearing this, Meng Yunqiao slapped his thigh and felt a sense of sympathy.
They both were at the bottom of the list and sighed deeply:
"Alas, this is my fourth time taking the exam. You can see that I am dressed in red, because I am wearing it specially for the exam."
"My dad said that I have to wear red every day for the next three months to make sure I pass the exam and become an instant success. My name will appear on the red list, hehe."
The corners of Su Yuan's mouth twitched slightly.
She thought she was good at making up stories and had deceived her father and Doctor You of Huichuntang.
I didn’t expect that Meng Yunqiao’s father is also an expert.
It is better to go to the temple and pray for a talisman than to wear red clothes every day.
Su Yuan said nothing, but said:
"Well, I wish you success."
Perhaps Mr. Meng wanted to have a psychological effect on Meng Yunqiao.
Meng Yunqiao received the blessing and felt very happy. He then said:
"By the way, where do you live? We are both wanderers in this world. Let's study together and try to get admitted. I will come to find you after school."
"You don't know. It's been three years. Since I came to Baichuan Academy three years ago, my classmates have either passed the exam to become a Tongsheng or given up and found another way out."
"I am the only one. My parents wouldn't let me give up. They said they wanted to rely on me, a girl, to change the family from a merchant. I took the exam until I was 16 for this, and I'm still studying with a bunch of kids."
Su Yuan raised the corners of his lips and tried his best to hold back his laughter:
"My house is on West Street, the third from the bottom two rows from the front. You can come find me when you have time."
Meng Yunqiao nodded and said enviously:
"It's good that you live close by. The house I rent is also on West Street, but my family is not here. I am from Tongcheng and came here three years ago because of its reputation."
After saying that, she leaned closer to Su Yuan and whispered:
"I didn't expect that within less than a year after I came here, Shu Ming would become the most famous school in this town. I even wondered if I was unlucky."
"Don't tell anyone about this, or else if even Baichuan doesn't want me anymore, I'll have nowhere to go."
"I can't even get into the high-level schools and academies in Tongcheng, and I hate the low-level ones. The main reason is that I have offended them all in the past."
Su Yuan could hardly hold back his laughter. How could this guy be so funny?
She tried to be normal, and it was rude to laugh at other people's experiences.
So, with a stern face, he said:
"Okay, I won't tell anyone."
Meng Yunqiao was about to thank her when she saw her husband coming. She nudged Su Yuan and reminded her:
"The teacher is here to give a lecture, please sit down quickly."
Upon hearing this, Su Yuan turned around and followed the other students to pay their respects to the teacher.
The teacher on the stage started a new lecture.
