Chapter 25 Kindergarten

Tianbao's kindergarten fees are not low, and families that can afford to send their children here are all well-off; every child here is a little princess or prince at home.

Shu Yan spoke with several parents who had spoken to Tianbao about his reaction and suggested conducting a surprise inspection during lunchtime when the children were eating.

"Are you telling the truth?" Grandma Wu, who had argued the most fiercely about the training class last time, perked up immediately upon hearing Shu Yan's words. "No wonder my baby eats so heartily when he gets home; he must have been hungry at kindergarten."

"My child is the same. Lately, he keeps saying he's hungry, even though he eats his dinner very heartily. I thought it was because he played a lot at school and was hungry quickly, but it turns out he just wasn't full. I have to talk to the teacher."

"Wait a minute. We don't have any evidence right now. If we go to the teacher, will they admit it? We need evidence. The child is still young and doesn't know anything. Let's just put what happened this morning aside and wait until lunchtime at the kindergarten to see for ourselves what they are eating and the hygiene of the kitchen. What do you think?" Shu Yan stopped the group. How could they possibly admit it if they went there now? They would have to catch the thief red-handed, or they would be seen as making trouble.

Several parents hesitated for a moment, then agreed with Shuyan's statement.

"I still have to go to work. How about I come over after I get off work?"

Some of the children's mothers also have to work, so their time is not as free as that of grandmothers or stay-at-home mothers.

“We have so many people here, we won’t miss a few more. Come back earlier.” Surprisingly, it was Grandma Wu who agreed first.

As long as it doesn't involve her beloved grandson, Grandma Wu is quite easy to talk to.

The parents were all homeowners in the community. Grandma Wu was one of the earliest residents to move in. She invited the group to sit at her home.

Shu Yan didn't expect that Grandma Wu's house was also in Building 2. Her house was on the first floor. She said that her son specially chose the first floor because she and her husband were getting old.

"The main thing is that the first floor comes with a garden. My husband doesn't have any other hobbies, he just likes to grow things." Grandma Wu invited everyone to sit down and cut out a watermelon. "Don't be shy, have a slice to cool off."

"Thank you." Shu Yan took the watermelon and smiled, "We're really destined to meet. I also live in Building 2, in apartment 1201, so we're practically neighbors."

"Oh my, that's my neighbor." Grandma Wu looked at Shu Yan in surprise. She thought she had a small apartment, but she didn't expect that she bought a large apartment on the twelfth floor. She really couldn't tell.

Not long after, Grandpa Wu returned carrying a hoe and some vegetables. Seeing so many people in the house, he looked at Grandma Wu with a puzzled expression.

Upon learning the reason, Grandpa Wu's face darkened. "This matter needs to be taken seriously. You should go and check it out first. If there's no problem, that would be best. But if it really is like this, then we absolutely cannot let it go."

The kindergarten serves lunch at 11:00 AM. Shu Yan and her friends arrived at 10:30 AM and asked to enter the kindergarten, but were stopped by the security guard.

"We are all parents, can't we even go to the kindergarten to see our own children?" one mother asked.

"The children are in class, and the parents probably don't want to disturb them, right?" the security guard said kindly.

“We can’t even go into the kindergarten to take a look without disturbing the children’s class?” Grandma Wu said immediately.

The gatekeeper was at a loss for words, but Grandma Wu waved her hand defiantly and said, "We'll go in and see if the child is behaving, then we'll leave."

The group entered the kindergarten without incident. The children weren't playing outside; presumably, the teachers had called them back to the classroom to prepare for lunch. They headed straight for the kitchen, but a teacher stopped them.

"Are you parents? The classroom is over there, you've come to the wrong place."

“We didn’t go to the wrong place. We just happened to have nothing to do today, so we came to see what the children had for lunch. Is that not allowed?” a grandmother said with a smile.

The parents kept talking, and the kindergarten teachers couldn't handle it, so they had no choice but to let them visit the kitchen.

The people picking up and dropping off the children are either mothers or grandmothers, who are all good at managing household chores. You can tell the problem as soon as you enter the kitchen. Right in the middle is a worktable with three large plates on it: one with shredded potatoes, one with shredded carrots, and one with green vegetables. Nothing is covered, and there are many flies crawling around on it.

Everyone's face darkened, and their faces darkened even more when they saw the food still cooking on the stove.

When they registered, they were told that the meals would consist of two vegetarian dishes, one meat dish, and one soup. However, what they actually saw was a stir-fried potato and carrot dish, a dry green vegetable dish, and a tomato and egg soup with almost no egg visible.

Someone immediately noticed that the meat on the cutting board had already been cut in half. She went over and picked it up to take a look, and found that it was actually pork neck meat.

Even people who can't cook know that pork neck is the worst cut of meat. I recently heard that eating too much of it is bad for your health, but a kindergarten actually bought pork neck for the children to eat.

The parents were furious. Their precious children were eating such poor food at kindergarten, and they were heartbroken and had difficulty breathing.

“Go, go and call your principal. We bought this house here specifically because we liked this kindergarten. They promised it would be an internationally-oriented bilingual kindergarten with foreign teachers. We can accept that there are only two foreign teachers in the whole kindergarten, we don’t expect our little one to learn anything. But we pay so much money every month, and this is all you feed our child? No wonder my child is always hungry after school, it’s no wonder she can’t get enough to eat.”

“They’re all heartless bastards, feeding children pork neck meat and not even cleaning up properly. This isn’t over.”

A dozen or so parents were making a ruckus there, criticizing each other. The principal, who had rushed over after hearing the commotion, wiped the sweat from his brow and said as calmly as possible, "Parents, please don't be anxious. We can resolve any issues gradually."

“We can’t slow down. If we slow down any further, I’m afraid you’ll kill my baby. The lunch you brought us to see for the children wasn’t like this at all. It was all an act. You’re taking advantage of the children’s young age and ignorance. Aren’t you afraid of being struck by lightning for this kind of money? It’s two hundred yuan. With the training fee, that’s three hundred yuan. That’s about the salary of an ordinary worker. And this is what you’re feeding the children? We won’t be done until you give us an explanation.”

"What are you going to explain? Go directly to the property management. The best residential area in the entire southern part of the city, the best kindergarten? The best kindergarten feeds kids vegetables, radishes, and pork neck meat?"

"Yes, we'll go directly to the property management. We've spent so much money on this house and so much on tuition, and we can't even afford decent meals. If they haven't done their job properly, they should also be held responsible."

"I think we should call the police directly. This is murder for money." Grandma Wu was so angry that her face turned red.

They are all precious children at home, and parents would love for them to eat as much as possible. But the kindergarten mistreats their children, which is unacceptable and will definitely break the hearts of grandmothers and mothers.

Shu Yan opened her mouth, only to find that there was no room for her to interject. The angry parents had already pushed her to the sidelines, and now the main force consisted of several grandmothers.

A large group of people arrived at the property management office, demanding that the property manager come out aggressively. Anyone who didn't know better would think they were up to something.

The property manager is a kind-looking woman, but it would be a mistake to assume she's easy to talk to. In this day and age, being a property manager in such a large community is no easy feat.

"Ladies and grandmas, could you please let me understand what's going on? There are so many of you here, and you're all talking at once, so I don't understand anything. I need to know what happened before we can solve the problem."

After understanding what had happened, the supervisor glanced at the kindergarten principal and said with a fawning smile, "Look how hot it is outside, why don't you come inside and sit down with me for a while?" The supervisor calmed the anger of the grandmothers in front of them with gentle words, led them to the lobby, and served them tea and water attentively, and also had a lot of fruit brought out. After this process, the angry parents gradually calmed down.

Seeing that things were almost settled, the supervisor smiled and said, "I understand the situation. Perhaps the principal's explanation wasn't clear enough. The children's meals are all planned by a professional nutritionist. Children this age don't have very good digestive systems, so there are relatively more vegetables than meat. I believe the children don't like to eat vegetables at home, right?" Seeing that the mothers and grandmothers remained silent, the supervisor smiled and continued, "We hired a very well-known nutritionist from Gangcheng. He told us that children must eat more vegetables to supplement various vitamins. This is the weekly menu that the kindergarten has prepared for the children. The dishes are different every day. Today, it's shredded potatoes and carrots, bok choy, a stir-fried pork dish, and a tomato and egg soup. One meat dish, two vegetable dishes, and a soup. After the meal, each child gets half an apple. It's a balanced meal with meat, vegetables, and fruit. I guarantee that no kindergarten in the entire southern city is as professional as ours."

“Are we concerned about dietary balance, hygiene, and the meat we feed our children?” Shu Yan stepped out from behind. “It’s good for children to eat more vegetables, but I’d rather they not eat unclean vegetables. The vegetables were washed and chopped but left in the bowl without a cover, and flies were crawling all over them. It’s one thing to have little meat, but to feed children pork neck meat—where is the nutritionist in Gangcheng? I’m going to find him and ask him if this is the most nutritious way to eat. If he dares to guarantee in front of everyone that this way of eating is good for children’s health, we will admit that we are being unreasonable and apologize.”

“Yes, we’re not concerned about the food combinations, but rather hygiene and ingredients. Two hundred yuan a month for tuition is too little, isn’t it? If it’s not enough, you can say so. Why cut corners on the children’s meals?” Grandma Wu said immediately, having figured things out.

“That’s right. The child is so young. We sent him to kindergarten out of trust, but you fed him those things and now you say it’s okay. Go and call that nutritionist over and ask him if he eats pork neck meat.”

The parents immediately started arguing again.

The supervisor glared at Director Lin. Very well, she had gone to great lengths to solve the problem, only to find out that she had concealed such an important issue. Not only did she withhold the children's food allowance, but she also fed them pork neck meat and neglected hygiene. After this matter was over, she would definitely report this to her superiors and fire that Lin.

"Parents, please calm down and listen to me. It's summer now, and a few flies are inevitable. The teachers have already reported this to me, and I've already sent someone to buy fly traps. As for the vegetables, pork neck meat, and hygiene products, I handed the kitchen over to the vice principal. I didn't expect such a mistake to occur. It's my fault for not managing it properly, and I will definitely investigate thoroughly and deal with it seriously." Principal Lin stepped forward at the right moment.
