Chapter 52 Dinner

Shu Yan wanted to ask Fang Zeyu to come along, but he disappeared again after a short while.

At first, Shu Yan thought he was using her as bait to lure out the human traffickers, just like fishing. But now she realized that wasn't the case at all. When they weren't at Nancheng University, Shu Yan would greet him and he would respond. But when they were at Nancheng University, Shu Yan couldn't see him at all, and even if she did, he would act like a stranger.

She guessed that Fang Zeyu felt his reputation was bad and was afraid of implicating her.

Shu Yan arrived at the kindergarten with her head down. The child was still having tutoring, and there were still about twenty minutes left. She decided to go check on the new house first.

The house is fully renovated, including furniture and appliances. Because we chose the developer's own renovation company, we got a discount, and the total cost was 10,000 yuan. Shuyan looked at the bill; bricks now cost 12 cents each, cement 7 yuan, and plumbing and wiring are okay. The most important thing is that the labor costs now are vastly different from what they will be in the future. I remember when we renovated our house in 2018, skilled workers like carpenters and electricians cost 300 yuan a day, and helpers 150 yuan, not including cigarettes and drinks. Now, skilled workers only cost 15 yuan a day, and helpers 8 yuan.

The reason it cost more than 10,000 yuan was because Shuyan made three built-in wardrobes, partitioned off a small room in the living room to store miscellaneous items, and renovated the balcony and two bathrooms, which increased the cost.

The home appliances were chosen by the interior designer who took Shuyan to select them. They got the lowest price by using the company's name. Even so, the appliances were still very expensive. A refrigerator, a color TV, a washing machine, and four air conditioners cost more than 20,000 yuan, which was more expensive than the renovation fee.

Unfortunately, electrical appliances are considered luxury items these days. Many families still use black and white TVs, like Wu Xiuyue's family, who still use a 10-inch black and white TV. Lin Hui's family is better off and has bought a color TV, but they don't have a washing machine. They only have one air conditioner in the master bedroom, which is already quite extravagant. It's rare to see someone as wealthy as Shu Yan.

Shu Yan bought the furniture from someone Chen Fei knew. They said it was mahogany furniture, but she had only heard of it and never seen it. She believed Chen Fei wouldn't lie to her, since mahogany furniture could hold its value. Since she would use it anyway, she bought it. A set of mahogany tables and chairs, a sofa, a TV cabinet, a coffee table, three desks, a bookcase, and two dressing tables were all bought by Shu Yan at once, costing 18,000 yuan.

Chen Fei said that this set of furniture was made by an old master craftsman using ancient methods. The workmanship was excellent, and he wouldn't sell it to anyone who wasn't a close acquaintance. Shu Yan didn't understand these things; she could only tell whether it looked good or not. The carved flowers and birds were lifelike, and the style was retro, so she bought it.

The bed was also recommended by Chen Fei. It cost more than two thousand yuan, but it was really comfortable to lie on. Shu Yan felt that half of a person's life is spent in bed, so the bed is very important. She originally planned to get children's beds for the two children, but then she thought better of it and bought them 1.5-meter beds instead.

Including the renovation, this house cost about 500,000 yuan. If you add the appliances, bed, and other miscellaneous items, the total comes to 550,000 yuan.

It cost a lot of money, but Shu Yan felt it was worth it. Not to mention that the house has great potential for appreciation in the future, the main thing is that she is comfortable living in it. She definitely won't move to another house in the short term. She will live there for at least ten or twenty years, or even her whole life.

The weather forecast said it would rain that night. Shu Yan closed the window, checked inside and out, turned off the power and left. She saw Sister Zhang next door at the elevator. Shu Yan had been there many times but had never run into her.

"Sister Zhang moved in?" Shu Yan noticed that she was carrying a lot of used household items.

"Don't even mention it. Relatives came to visit, and there wasn't enough room for them. So, the children's father and father had to make do with the kids in the new house for one night." Sister Zhang pursed her lips as she mentioned her relatives. "They're practically unrelated relatives, but they come to my house every time they come to Nancheng. They save on accommodation fees, but it's so inconvenient for us."

People are frugal these days. If they have relatives in the area, they will go to visit them. However, Shu Yan is sure that most people will bring gifts when they go. They will never go empty-handed. But from Zhang Jie's perspective, she is not wrong. When relatives from her hometown come, she always has to cook a few dishes and make up the bed. The house is small to begin with, so it is inevitable that she will feel resentful.

However, this was someone else's business, so Shu Yan didn't say much. She just smiled awkwardly and asked, "Is your place already renovated?"

If she remembers correctly, this house was bought around the same time as hers. Was it also rushed to be built?

"Yeah, how complicated can renovations be? Once the plumbing and electrical work is done and the walls are painted, that's it." Speaking of this, Sister Zhang asked Shuyan, "I saw your renovation the other day, with that big color TV, refrigerator, and air conditioner. You must have spent a lot of money, right?"

"It's alright." Shu Yan didn't like people asking about these things. "The elevator's here. I have to pick up the kids, so I'll be going now."

"Alright, go ahead and get busy." As the elevator doors closed, Sister Zhang couldn't help but mutter, "So many appliances, at least 20,000 yuan, tsk tsk, they're really rich."

After picking up Tianbao, Shuyan looked back and didn't see Fang Zeyu, but she knew he was nearby.

"Mom, what are you looking at?"

"It's nothing, let's go pick up my sister and take her home." Shu Yan kept an eye on the people behind her, and finally spotted Fang Zeyu when she reached the market. Shu Yan stopped. "Jingjing, have you seen that uncle?"

"That uncle who looks fierce but is a hero?" Children have good memories, and besides, Fang Zeyu's appearance is very distinctive.

Shu Yan smiled and said, "Yes, go tell him to go get the things from the flower bed outside the community later."

Jingjing glanced at Shuyan, asked nothing, and ran over.

"uncle."

Fang Zeyu was a little reserved as it was his first time meeting such a young girl. "Hello."

"My mom wants you to go to the flower bed outside the community to get something later." After saying that, she ran back to Shuyan's side.

Tonight I'll make braised pork, cola chicken wings, celery and squid, and tofu. Shu Yan quickly finished cooking, took out lunchboxes and started packing the dishes. After packing, she let the two children eat first, then carried them down to the small flower bed outside the community. There weren't many people there. Shu Yan put the food in the grass, looked around, and didn't see Fang Zeyu. Could it be that he didn't come?

Then Shu Yan saw Fang Zeyu casually walk out, but not towards her, clearly indicating that he was there.

Watching Shu Yan leave, Fang Zeyu calmly took out the things Shu Yan had placed in the flower bed: a hot meal and a bag of washed fruit. He tightened his grip on the bag, feeling a sudden warmth in his heart.

"You're back?" An old woman came out of the house, saw Fang Zeyu, and smiled, "I'll heat up your dinner for you tonight."

"No need, Grandma, I brought back food." Fang Zeyu went over to help the old lady.

This is the sister-in-law of the old lady who was looking at houses with Shu Yan. She is younger than the old lady. Because she heard bad news one after another, she broke down. She looks like she is over eighty years old, even though she is seventy.

"You brought lunch?" The old lady helped take it out, glanced at Fang Zeyu after seeing the dishes inside, and smiled. "This food is really well made. You must be a virtuous person."

Fang Zeyu thought back to Shu Yan and realized that she was indeed a kind and virtuous person.

The old lady didn't ask any more questions and went back to her room to sleep. Everyone said that Fang Zeyu only recognized her as his grandmother because he was after her house. What did those people know? She was in poor health and had to take medicine every month. The government subsidies weren't enough, so Xiaoyu paid for everything. He also bought her clothes and other necessities and took good care of her. Even her own grandson wasn't as attentive as Xiaoyu. Several times she wanted to explain to others, but Xiaoyu stopped her. It was a terrible thing to have such irresponsible parents and such a stepmother who couldn't stand seeing others happy. As a result, Xiaoyu still couldn't find a wife. If the person cooking for Xiaoyu was a girl, that would be great. If Xiaoyu could get married, she could finally die in peace.

Shuyan had finished eating and tidying up. She first gave Tianbao a bath, then bathed with Jingjing. The three of them played on the bed for a while before getting ready to sleep.

Shu Yan discovered that since arriving in this world, except when she had to go to buy goods, she would go to bed no later than 10 p.m. and get up at 6 a.m. Early to bed and early to rise really made a difference in her mental state.

So not having a phone or computer has its advantages; it forces you to go to bed early. Shu Yan clenched her hands. It was another day of thinking about her phone. If she went to sleep, she could see it in her dreams.

I had originally planned to buy breakfast for Fang Zeyu this morning, but unfortunately I didn't see him. When I got off the bus, Shu Yan waited for Fang Zeyu.

"My friend is coming to have lunch with me today. It should be safe to be with her. I'll put it back in the flower bed tonight. Don't forget to pick it up." After saying that, Shu Yan turned and ran away.

Yesterday, after picking up the goods, she called Hu Ruixue and arranged to have lunch together today.

I thought it would just be a simple meal, but Hu Ruixue brought up collaborations again.

"When I approached you for a collaboration, you said you didn't have the time or energy. But look at you, you've gone and found someone else to collaborate with," Hu Ruixue said, feigning anger.

“That’s different. My collaboration with Lao Zhang is only temporary. These thermal underwear products require no technical skill and will be everywhere in a week. I’m just trying to make a quick buck.” Shu Yan plans to withdraw once there’s no more profit to be made.

"Of course, you can only make a quick buck this way, but haven't you realized there's a huge market here?" Hu Ruixue knew that thermal underwear would definitely sell out. "I came to you this time because I want to start an underwear brand with you, mainly selling underwear and thermal underwear. The initial investment won't be too big. What do you think?"

“You can also add pajamas,” Shu Yan said.

"You're really quick-witted. It's a real shame your family didn't let you go to school." Hu Ruixue steered the conversation back on track. "In short, are you in or not?"
