After the man left, Jiang Yuwei said to Yao Guang and Liu Shi:
"You two come with me to the backyard."
The two exchanged a glance, then followed Jiang Yuwei nervously to the backyard.
When Jiang Yuwei arrived at the backyard, she first asked the two of them to sit down.
“Yao Guang, I understand your eagerness to protect the Liu family, but next time try to find a way to resolve this without disrupting the shop’s business.”
Yao Guang scratched his head dumbfounded after hearing this, and looked at Jiang Yuwei.
"Um, Madam, what kind of method are you referring to? What method?"
Jiang Yuwei smiled faintly.
"Drag him out and beat him."
Yao Guang's eyes widened upon hearing this. He had thought that Jiang Yuwei had invited him and Liu Shi in to reprimand them, but he never expected Jiang Yuwei to say something like this.
So he glanced down at Liu Shi secretly before nodding to Jiang Yuwei in response:
"I understand, madam. I will be more careful next time."
Jiang Yuwei waved her hand.
"Go wash your face, tidy up, and go upstairs to keep an eye on your stall."
After Yao Guang left, glancing back every few steps, Jiang Yuwei finally took Liu's hand and sat down.
"Liu, what do you think of Yao Guang?"
Liu glanced in the direction of the door, then lowered her head shyly.
"I think he's a good person."
Jiang Yuwei chuckled softly.
"Then are you willing to marry him?"
Upon hearing Jiang Yuwei's words, Liu immediately withdrew her hand, stared wide-eyed at Jiang Yuwei, and nervously waved her hands, saying:
"No, no, that's not what I meant, I just..."
"Alright, do you think I can't see through your little scheme?"
Upon hearing Jiang Yuwei's words, Liu lowered her head shyly.
"But, but I'm already married and have a child named Gou Dan. Yao Guang has never been married, so he wouldn't even look at me."
Jiang Yuwei poured Liu a cup of tea.
"If he didn't like you, why did he defend you like that today?"
"That's because he's kind-hearted and can't bear to see others suffer."
Jiang Yuwei handed the tea to Liu Shi.
"What you're saying is ridiculous. You try it yourself later. If it were someone else, would Yao Guang still fight that person so recklessly?"
Upon hearing Jiang Yuwei's words, Liu lowered her head, pursed her lips, and nervously rubbed the teacup in her hands.
Seeing this, Jiang Yuwei reached out and grasped Liu's hand.
"Liu, to put it bluntly, your husband is probably long gone by now. You're still so young, do you really want to remain a widow for him for the rest of your life?"
Liu didn't speak, but her lips pressed even tighter, and tears kept flowing from her eyes. In fact, Gou Dan's father was taken away to join the army after she became pregnant.
Now that the child is all grown up, he has never seen what his father looks like. He has almost forgotten what his father looks like. Before, in Ningjia Village, there was Gou Dan's grandmother, and the three of them depended on each other for survival.
Now that Gou Dan's grandmother has long since passed away, it's not easy for Liu to raise Gou Dan on her own. Fortunately, Jiang Yuwei helped out back then.
Now that she's in the capital, Liu sees Ningqiu and Daya always together, while she's all alone with her son. She often feels sad and wonders where Gou Dan's father is.
However, it's not accurate to say that Liu had any deep feelings for this man, because their marriage was also arranged by their parents and a matchmaker. Not long after they got married, Gou Dan's father went to join the army, and she hardly experienced any warmth between husband and wife.
Now that Yao Guang, such a kind-hearted, considerate, and gentle man, has suddenly appeared and is caring for her, Liu inevitably feels a different kind of emotion in her heart, something she has never experienced before.
Today, she also experienced the feeling of being protected and having someone to rely on. Yao Guang's broad shoulders, rough hands, and the earthy smell on his body made Liu feel a sense of security she had never felt before.
However, Yao Guang never explicitly expressed his feelings to her. Although she had the same feelings, Liu always felt that she was not good enough for Yao Guang, so she never thought of breaking the ice.
Now that Jiang Yuwei asked her this question, Liu felt a surge of grievance and gratitude. Jiang Yuwei noticed the little detail that no one else had seen.
If Jiang Yuwei really insists on arranging this marriage for me, I will never be able to repay her even if I work like a slave in the future.
Seeing that Liu was just lowering her head and shedding tears, Jiang Yuwei became anxious.
"Liu, you're already this old, how many more good years do you have left? Right now it's just the two of us here, so say whatever you want to say, what are you hiding from me!"
Upon hearing Jiang Yuwei's words, Liu raised her eyes to look at Jiang Yuwei and began to sob.
“Madam, I’m not afraid you’ll laugh at me, but I genuinely think Yao Guang is a good person. When I’m with him, I feel at ease, as if a weight has been lifted from my shoulders…”
Jiang Yuwei took out a handkerchief and gently wiped away the tear stains from the corners of Liu's eyes.
“Now that you’ve raised Gou Dan to this age, you’ve done right by your husband’s family. It’s time for you to live your own life and enjoy your retirement.”
When Liu saw that Jiang Yuwei had explained the hardships she had endured in just a few words, she felt even more aggrieved and threw herself into Jiang Yuwei's arms and cried.
Seeing this, Jiang Yuwei could only gently pat Liu's back to comfort her:
"Stop crying, or you'll have swollen eyes and won't be able to collect money from me."
Upon hearing this, Liu burst into laughter again.
Jiang Yuwei wiped away her tears and said softly:
"No matter what, you've finally gotten over your hardships. If you like Yao Guang, I'll talk to her and ask her to marry you. Later, I'll arrange a room for the two of you in the General's Mansion, just like Ning Wu and the others."
Seeing that Jiang Yuwei had even considered the future for her, Liu was deeply moved and quickly got up to kneel down before her.
Seeing this, Jiang Yuwei quickly reached out to stop her.
"What are you doing? We shouldn't be kneeling all the time between us. If you really want to thank me, just work hard in the shop."
Liu nodded, looking at Jiang Yuwei with a determined expression.
"Madam, rest assured, our whole family will stay in the General's Mansion from now on and never leave. We will serve you like cattle and horses for the rest of our lives and still be unable to repay this kindness."
Jiang Yuwei patted Liu's shoulder and smiled:
"I don't need you to be my slave. Alright, go out and do your work. I'll go talk to Yao Guang about this later. I won't mention your side of the story. I'll sound him out first. After all, he's a man, and he should take the initiative. What do you think?"
