Liu's hands twisted back and forth incessantly, as if she had made up her mind. She raised her head and looked at Ning Huaizhi, saying:
"Just take what I'm saying with a grain of salt; don't think I'm trying to sow discord between your two families."
Seeing this, Jiang Yuwei anxiously stepped forward and grabbed Liu, saying:
“Liu, I know your character. There’s no need for you to try and sow discord. Just say what you have to say.”
Seeing this, the village head nodded and said:
"With so many people here today, just say whatever you know. As for whether it's true or false, we'll decide for ourselves. You don't need to think too much about it."
Upon hearing this, and meeting Jiang Yuwei's anxious gaze, Liu slowly spoke:
“I waited for the oxcart at the village entrance early this morning. I saw it from afar. I saw the second son of the Ning family pushing a cart, sneaking out of the village. I was a little curious, so I hid behind a tree and took a closer look. I saw a piglet tied to the cart, about the same size as the ones in your yard.”
Liu pointed somewhat timidly to the pigs in the pigsty, then stammered out:
“Yuwei, I only saw this, but I’m not sure if the pig on Ning’s second son’s truck is the one that went missing from your house. So I can’t say anything carelessly. I’m only telling you what I saw. Please, please don’t think I’m trying to sow discord between you and your in-laws.”
Jiang Yuwei gently patted Liu's hand and smiled:
"Don't worry, I'm thanking you so much, how could I possibly drag you into this? You know I'm a very reasonable person. Do you remember what time you saw Ning Chunlin leave the village?"
After a moment's thought, Liu said:
"I left home at dawn, and it was only about fifteen minutes after I arrived at the village entrance that I saw Ning Chunlin leaving the village."
Jiang Yuwei and Ning Huaizhi exchanged a glance, and Ning Huaizhi said in a deep voice:
"Yuwei, don't worry about me. I'll do whatever you say about things at home."
In fact, when Liu mentioned Ning Chunlin, the familiar figure from last night immediately came to mind and it was indeed Ning Chunlin.
Ning Huaizhi never expected that his own brothers would one day steal from his home. When he was single, he had endured all the exploitation his family gave him without a word. Now that he was married, everything in the house was earned by his wife through hard work. How could they do such a thing? Ning Huaizhi was heartbroken.
Jiang Yuwei understood Ning Huaizhi's attitude, so she said to everyone:
"I will have to trouble you all to come with me to the Ning family."
After saying that, Jiang Yuwei asked Ning Zhao and Ning Wan to stay at home to look after the house. She didn't want the two children to be exposed to these adult struggles too early. She also asked Tie Zhu and Ning Wu to stay at the paper mill to do their own things.
Jiang Yuwei pushed Ning Huaizhi's wheelchair in front, followed by the village head and Uncle Ning Wu, and the group headed towards the Ning family.
Just as I reached the courtyard gate, I heard Chen Guixiang shouting:
"You're just a freeloader! Can't you learn from that bitch Jiang Yuwei how to make money? Look at her, she's only been separated from the family for a few months and she's already raising pigs and sheep, and she has so many chickens, ducks and geese at home! And you? You can't earn a single penny and all you do is ask me for money!"
Upon hearing this, Madam Sun muttered:
"Isn't it because of you, the housekeeper, that we can't make money?"
Upon hearing Sun's words, Chen Guixiang became enraged and grabbed a feather duster, striking Sun with it.
"What did you say, you filthy bastard! Say it again!"
Jiang Yuwei kicked open the courtyard gate and coldly watched Chen Guixiang chase after Sun Shi and beat her. It seemed that their relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law was not so harmonious. It was only because she, the bullied daughter-in-law, was in the middle that they formed a united front against her. Now that she had moved out of the house, Sun Shi's life would not be much better.
Chen Guixiang stared at the person standing at the gate of the courtyard and froze on the spot.
Jiang Yuwei stepped forward, stared at Chen Guixiang, and said coldly:
"Where is Ning Chunlin? Tell Ning Chunlin to get out here!"
When Sun saw that Jiang Yuwei had mentioned her man, she quickly stood in front of Jiang Yuwei with her hands on her hips, revealing a fierce look:
"What do you want with my man? Isn't Ning Huaizhi, who's already crippled, enough for you? You're even trying to covet his brother? My man wouldn't even look at someone like you!"
Hearing Sun's outrageous words, Jiang Yuwei didn't hesitate to slap her twice across the face. Sun didn't have time to dodge and took the blows. Not one to back down, she immediately reached out to grab Jiang Yuwei's face.
Seeing this, Ning Huaizhi swiftly fired a slingshot at Sun's left eye. Although he held back his strength, Sun's left eye still visibly swelled up. Sun cried out in pain, covering her eye with her hand.
"Ouch, it hurts! It hurts so much!"
Seeing this, Liu almost burst out laughing. She quickly turned to the side, covered her face with a handkerchief, bit her lower lip tightly, and her shoulders trembled as she tried to suppress her laughter.
Jiang Yuwei looked at Sun's swollen left eye, then helplessly glared at Ning Huaizhi. This was just a quarrel between women, and she didn't want Ning Huaizhi to get involved, lest others say that her family had bullied Sun.
Ning Huaizhi instantly understood the meaning in Jiang Yuwei's eyes. He could only stick out his tongue at her and silently put away the slingshot. He didn't want to hit Sun Shi, but when he saw her baring her teeth at his wife, he couldn't help but take action.
When Chen Guixiang saw that her eldest son's family had brought a group of people to her house to cause trouble early in the morning, she could no longer hold back and sat down on the ground to wail.
"I don't want to live anymore! Eldest son, are you trying to drive your own mother to her death? You unfilial descendant, I might as well die! How could I be so unlucky to have such a vicious daughter-in-law who comes to cause trouble every day? Isn't it enough that your eldest son's family has already separated from the main family? Do you have to drive your father and me to our deaths before you're satisfied?"
The villagers who were originally going to work in the fields lost their will to do so after Chen Guixiang's shout, and they all gathered at the entrance of Ningjia Courtyard to watch the excitement.
The village head, his head throbbing from Chen Guixiang's nagging, snapped:
"Enough, Chen Guixiang! Stop throwing a tantrum here! Go and call Ning Chunlin out; we need to talk to him!"
Seeing that the village head was angry, Chen Guixiang quickly sprang up from the ground, dusted herself off, and laughed:
“Village head, my second son left early this morning, and we haven’t seen him since. You know how my second son is, he’s never home. Now you’re asking me to find him, but I don’t know where to look. Aren’t you making things difficult for this old woman?”
