Chapter 125 Battle with a Stranger in the Courtyard

Upon hearing Ning Huaizhi's words, Jiang Yuwei became much more nervous. She didn't want Ning Huaizhi to get hurt, but she didn't know martial arts and was afraid that she wouldn't be able to help him and would only cause him trouble. At this time, she could only hide and wait for an opportunity to act.

Hearing the increasingly impatient knocking at the door outside the courtyard, Jiang Yuwei's heart started racing. She felt as if her heart was about to jump out of her throat, and she couldn't help but clench Ning Huaizhi's hand tightly.

Ning Huaizhi froze. He had never held his wife's hand before, and today...

"Knock knock knock..."

"Is anyone inside? I'm just passing through and would like to ask for the night's lodging! Open the door quickly!"

Ning Huaizhi immediately composed himself, his eyes fixed on the outside of the courtyard. He turned to Jiang Yuwei and whispered:

"Go back inside and hide."

Jiang Yuwei glanced at Ning Huaizhi with concern, let go of his hand, and went into her room. She leaned against the window and looked out into the yard through the gap in the curtains.

Ning Huaizhi pushed his wheelchair to the kitchen door, opened the door a crack, and looked into the yard.

Just then, the courtyard gate was suddenly kicked open...

It didn't open...

Another kick...

It hasn't been kicked open yet...

Jiang Yuwei breathed a sigh of relief. "You think I spent so much money building this house just for show? I made this front door with thick wooden planks..."

"Thump!"

The courtyard gate was kicked open...

Jiang Yuwei was speechless for a moment...

At this moment, Ning Wan was also awakened by the loud noise. Just as she was about to get up and start crying, Jiang Yuwei quickly covered her mouth and whispered to comfort her:

"Wan'er, be good, Wan'er, listen to me. There are bad people in the courtyard, so please don't make a sound."

Seeing that Ning Wan seemed to have regained some consciousness, Ning Wan nodded at Jiang Yuwei with innocent-looking eyes. Only then did Jiang Yuwei release her hand from Ning Wan's mouth and whisper to her:

"Wan'er, hide in the wardrobe. No matter what happens, don't come out, understand?"

Seeing Ning Wan covering her mouth with her little hand and nodding repeatedly, Jiang Yuwei opened the cabinet, carried Ning Wan inside, closed the cabinet door, and then anxiously peered out through the curtain seam.

By the moonlight, Jiang Yuwei could tell that the man's build was the same one she had met earlier that day. Her heart tightened, and she didn't even dare to breathe.

The man entered the courtyard and looked around. But as soon as he lifted his foot, he stepped on a rake on the ground. Before he could react, the rake's handle stood up and smashed into his face, causing blood to flow from his nose.

"Damn it, who did this? Show yourself!"

The man, somewhat exasperated, strode into the courtyard. However, he had only taken a few steps when he tripped over a rope. Fortunately, he knew martial arts, and after barely regaining his balance, he was struck in the right eye by a flying mud ball. The impact caused him to see stars, and he angrily exclaimed:

"Who set this trap! Show yourself! What kind of hero hides in the shadows!"

Jiang Yuwei watched in astonishment as everything that happened in the courtyard. Why hadn't she thought of setting a trap in the courtyard beforehand? Ning Huaizhi was indeed more useful at this crucial moment. Just as Jiang Yuwei was figuring out how to get rid of this man, she saw Ning Huaizhi calmly cursing while frantically shooting mud balls at him.

Ning Huaizhi was strong to begin with, and every blow was aimed at vital points, so the man quickly became unable to defend himself and wanted to find out who was attacking him.

Jiang Yuwei looked up at the bow and arrow hanging on the wall. She had asked Ning Huaizhi to make it for Ning Wan to practice with. Without thinking, Jiang Yuwei took the bow and arrow down.

What a joke! Women who have lived through the apocalypse still know some basic archery skills. So Jiang Yuwei quietly opened a small crack in the window, aimed at the man's head and shot. No matter how powerful it was, it would be good to help Ning Huaizhi share some of the firepower. At least it would let the man know that there was more than one person attacking him in this courtyard, which could disturb his mind.

People are always somewhat afraid of the unknown. Now that he has come to an unfamiliar courtyard and has been attacked so fiercely, he has no idea how many opponents are lurking in the shadows. Even a kung fu master would be a little scared.

Soon, the man was finding it difficult to resist the relentless onslaught from Jiang Yuwei and Ning Huaizhi.

"May I ask which esteemed hero is here?"

"Stop, stop fighting! If you've got the guts, show yourself and fight me!"

"You coward, come out here!"

"Stop, stop hitting me! I mean no harm, I just want to ask for lodging for the night!"

Jiang Yuwei and Ning Huaizhi were unwilling to stop their offensive. Seeing that communication was fruitless, the man could only grit his teeth and retreat. Fearing that he might return, Jiang Yuwei and Ning Huaizhi remained in their respective positions, constantly watching the movements in the courtyard.

The two of them kept watch all night without sleep. When they saw that the person did not return, Jiang Yuwei breathed a sigh of relief, took Ning Wan out of the wardrobe, and then went to the door to inspect the surroundings before tidying up the mess in the yard from the previous night.

Jiang Yuwei was thinking about delivering the papers that the guests had ordered to the town today, so she prepared breakfast early. After the family had eaten breakfast, she asked Ning Huaizhi to feed the man lying in the side room.

Jiang Yuwei then went to the backyard to arrange for Tie Zhu and Ning's armored vehicle:

"Tiezhu, we're going to town to deliver goods today. I'll lock the front gate now. No matter who comes, don't let them into our yard. If any strangers ask you for information, pretend you don't know anything. And under no circumstances should they be allowed into our paper mill. Today, you can stay in the yard and repair the shed. Don't go anywhere. We've prepared food for you. Remember to close the gate to the pond in the back yard as well."

Ning Daya knew about the commotion last night, so she nodded frantically before Tie Zhu could answer:

"I understand, Sister Yuwei. Don't worry, we'll take good care of the house."

Jiang Yuwei nodded and drove the oxcart to the front yard. She was worried about leaving Ning Wan alone at home, fearing that the strange man might not have left and would come back during the day to find out more. So she took Ning Wan with her to town.

Jiang Yuwei instructed Ning Huaizhi to find the scholar's courtyard according to the address. Jiang Yuwei then carried the papers inside and handed the scholar a newly made sheet of practice paper with grid lines printed on it.

"This is a brand new product we just made. It can be used to practice calligraphy. Here's one for you to try."

The scholar took the paper, looked it over, and laughed:

"Okay, I'll go back and practice. I've never seen this kind of paper before. If it works well, I'll order more from you."

Jiang Yuwei smiled and bid farewell to the scholar before moving on to the next house. At each house, she gave them a sheet of practice paper and explained its purpose. As she emerged from the last house, she suddenly realized that Ning Wan was gone from the carriage.

"Huaizhi, where did Ning Wan go?"

Ning Huai's pupils trembled slightly:

"Wan'er, she said she was bored while waiting in the carriage, so she went in to look for you. Didn't you see her?"

Jiang Yuwei's mind went blank for a moment. Where was Wan'er? I didn't see her come in at all!
