Chapter 11 Changing the Medicine

Seeing Chen Guixiang's unreasonable behavior, Jiang Yuwei didn't want to argue with her anymore and turned around to go into the house to check on Ning Huaizhi's injuries.

As soon as she entered, Jiang Yuwei saw Ning Huaizhi staring gloomily out the window. She shook her head helplessly, put down her basket, took out a packet of medicine, handed it to Ning Zhao, and said with a smile:

"Zhao'er, go and soak this medicine first. Mother will go out and brew the medicine later."

Ning Zhao was very happy to see Jiang Yuwei return. She quickly took the medicine bag, grabbed Ning Wan's hand, and went out.

Jiang Yuwei frowned as she looked at Ning Huaizhi and said:

"You, the eldest son in the family, are really not a good person. We make you do dangerous work, and now that you're back alive, no one in the family is happy."

Ning Huaizhi withdrew his gaze. He had heard every word Chen Guixiang had said. He knew that he had always been the unpopular one in the family since he was a child. All the dirty and tiring work had to be done by him, while the benefits always went to the second brother. If he was slightly dissatisfied, Chen Guixiang would use the excuse that the second brother was the younger brother and he was the older brother to brush him off.

Later, Zhou Su entered the family and suffered alongside him. Although he had no feelings for her, it was only because of his parents' wishes and the matchmaker's words. He did not want to disobey Chen Guixiang, so he married Zhou Su. They had a son and a daughter. After the children were born, he left home to join the army. Now that he has returned and heard that Zhou Su has died, he feels somewhat guilty towards her.

However, Chen Guixiang was not idle and found another wife for herself. However, this wife did not seem to have the same submissive temperament as Zhou Su. But that was good. Now that he was paralyzed, if his wife was also weak, his two children would probably suffer a lot.

Ning Huaizhi's resentment towards Jiang Yuwei had lessened by this point, so he spoke up:

"Thank you for buying medicine for me today, but Mother is right. I'll be bedridden anyway, so it doesn't matter whether I get treatment or not. I can bear this pain, and you won't need to go to town for medicine anymore."

Jiang Yuwei glared at Ning Huaizhi and said angrily:

“There’s no reason to tough it out when you’re sick. You’re not dead yet, are you going to give up on yourself? If you’re worried about me spending your mother’s money, I can always find a way to earn money to treat your injuries later.”

Although Jiang Yuwei's feelings for Ning Huaizhi were limited to his physical appearance, she simply couldn't bear to leave a living person like this, especially since he was the father of two children. In any case, having a father was better than having no one at all.

As Jiang Yuwei thought to herself, she reached out to undress Ning Huaizhi. Seeing this, Ning Huaizhi tensed up, turned his head away, and said in a deep voice:

"No need for you to change my dressing, I can do it myself."

Jiang Yuwei kept working with her hands, muttering to herself:

"I'm too lazy to take care of you. Now that you're injured like this, don't try to be strong. Besides, we're already husband and wife. I don't even try to hide it. What are you being so coy about, a grown man like you?"

Seeing that Jiang Yuwei said this, Ning Huaizhi could no longer refuse, so he silently turned his head to the side and refused to look at her.

Jiang Yuwei took out the spiritual spring water she had prepared beforehand and used it to wipe Ning Huaizhi's wounds. Although she did not know the specific effects of the spiritual spring water, she always felt relaxed and refreshed after taking a bath with it when she was tired from work, as if her blood vessels had been opened up.

Now, we're using the spiritual spring water to clean Ning Huaizhi's wounds, and also using it to brew medicine. We're also adding spiritual spring water to his daily food. Hopefully, he'll recover faster, and even if he doesn't fully recover, he won't feel so bad.

At this moment, Ning Huaizhi felt Jiang Yuwei's small hands constantly wiping and stroking his body. The wound that had felt very painful before didn't seem to hurt as much now, and he just felt very comfortable.

Jiang Yuwei didn't notice the change in Ning Huaizhi's expression. After quickly changing his bandages, she covered him with a blanket and instructed him:

"Sleep a little longer. I'll go out and brew your medicine. Right now, it's important for you to recover. Don't think about anything else."

After saying that, Jiang Yuwei went to the kitchen, found a ceramic pot, set up a fire in the yard, and started brewing medicine. She then called Ning Zhao and Ning Wan to help watch the fire.

He measured the bamboo he had split that day to a suitable size and sawed them one by one. He also found some scraps and polished some wedges and tenons to assemble the bed board and bed legs.

Before long, the simple bamboo bed was taking shape. Ning Zhao looked at Jiang Yuwei with admiration and said in a childish voice:

"Mom, you're amazing! How can you do everything?"

Having lived through a high-tech era, a zombie-infested era, and an apocalyptic era in her previous life, Jiang Yuwei naturally honed her life skills to an exceptional degree. In addition, she was naturally inquisitive and skillful, so she could grasp most things after just a glance, and once she put her hands to work, she could make anything.

Jiang Yuwei scratched her head a little embarrassed when Ning Zhao praised her like that:

"It's nothing serious. I'll make you and Wan'er a bamboo dragonfly to play with later. I guarantee you've never played with one before! By the way, Zhao'er, the medicine is ready. Go and serve it to your father. Be careful, it'll be hot!"

When Ning Zhao heard that her mother could make rare and unusual things that she had never seen before, her eyes were filled with anticipation as she looked at Jiang Yuwei. Even Ning Wan, who was usually silent, giggled at Jiang Yuwei.

Ning Zhao carefully poured the brewed medicine into a bowl, and then fanned it vigorously with a fan to cool it down faster. Seeing that the medicine was no longer steaming, she took the bowl to Ning Huaizhi to drink.

Seeing this, Jiang Yuwei grew even more fond of Ning Zhao. Zhao'er was a thoughtful child, and if she raised him well, he would never forget her kindness and betray her in the future. After all, she was alone and helpless in this world, and if she could raise Ning Zhao to be a successful person, she wouldn't have to worry about being lonely and helpless in her old age.

While thinking, Jiang Yuwei found a handy stone and hammered it to make the bamboo bed very sturdy. She then used the stone to smooth out all the rough edges of the bamboo. She lit a few piles of firewood under the bed, thinking that it would dry the bamboo bed, otherwise it would be too damp and sleeping on it for a long time would definitely harm her health.

It's early spring now, and the weather is getting warmer. I can only sleep on this bed until autumn at most. I'm afraid I won't be able to stand sleeping on the bamboo bed in winter. So I must find an opportunity to separate the family before autumn. Then the four of us won't have to squeeze into that small room, and I can sleep comfortably on the kang (heated brick bed).

Thinking this way, Jiang Yuwei became even more motivated. She tidied up the remaining bamboo and decided to make a covered toilet for Ning Huaizhi to put in the house. Since he was now unable to move around easily, it would save her some trouble if he could use the toilet indoors.

Without hesitation, Jiang Yuwei quickly created the prototype of the toilet using her memories from her previous life. After smoothing out the rough edges, she connected it to water and carried it into the house.

"Here you go. If you have trouble walking, you can use the toilet here."

As she spoke, Jiang Yuwei helped Ning Huaizhi, who was lying on the kang (a heated brick bed), down and placed him on the toilet, telling him to try it out first. Seeing his troubled expression as he stared at her, she said awkwardly:

"Okay, okay, you're so particular. You go first, call me when you're done."

After saying that, she left and considerately closed the door for Ning Huaizhi.
