Chapter 26 Fire

Jiang Yuwei pushed the wheelchair and brought her family to Huichuntang in the north of the city. As soon as they entered, she said to the shop assistant:

"Hello, we would like to ask the doctor to take a look at his leg."

When the shop assistant saw that patients had come in, he quickly led them to the inner courtyard and asked Doctor Lin to come and take a look.

After taking Ning Huaizhi's pulse, Doctor Lin lifted his trousers to carefully examine his leg injury. He kept nodding and shaking his head, leaving Jiang Yuwei confused. So she directly asked:

"Dr. Lin, I've come today to ask if his leg can be cured."

Dr. Lin then looked up at Jiang Yuwei for a while, then shook his head and said:

"It can get better, and it can't get better."

Upon hearing Doctor Lin's words, Ning Huaizhi suddenly felt uncertain and anxiously asked:

"Doctor, what do you mean by this?"

Dr. Lin stood up, sighed, and said:

"Your leg injury was quite serious. It's remarkable that it's recovered to this state. Your family must have taken excellent care of it. Originally, there was no hope that you could stand up again, but now, there's a glimmer of hope, but..."

Upon hearing that Ning Huaizhi's legs might be able to support him, Jiang Yuwei rushed forward and said anxiously:

"Doctor, just tell us what it is. We will do our best to heal his leg."

Seeing that Jiang Yuwei cared even more than he did, Ning Huaizhi felt a warmth rise in his heart, and his gaze towards her became even gentler.

Seeing Jiang Yuwei's eagerness, Dr. Lin stopped beating around the bush and spoke directly:

"His leg needs acupuncture and moxibustion treatment, but these are only auxiliary. He also needs to take a medicinal bath every day to heal his leg injury. More importantly, he needs to drink the medicine I prescribed for him. The other ingredients in this prescription are quite common, but the key ingredient must be a thousand-year-old wild ginseng to be effective."

As Dr. Lin spoke, he sighed again, looked at the family, and said helplessly:

“This thousand-year-old wild ginseng is an extremely precious medicinal material. Don’t even mention that your family could find it. Even I, who have been running this pharmacy every day and have dealt with many high-ranking officials and nobles, have never seen this thousand-year-old wild ginseng. How could you possibly find it?”

After hearing what Doctor Lin said, Ning Huaizhi smiled helplessly and said to Jiang Yuwei:

"Yuwei, I understand what you're thinking, but my leg is useless now, let's go back."

Jiang Yuwei ignored Ning Huaizhi, and after a moment's thought, asked Doctor Lin with a determined look:

"Dr. Lin, if I can find this thousand-year-old wild ginseng, are you confident that you can cure his leg?"

Dr. Lin hesitated for a moment, then simply nodded to Jiang Yuwei.

Jiang Yuwei felt reassured after receiving a positive reply. It was just a thousand-year-old wild ginseng. Her home was so close to the mountain that she could go to the mountain to find it in her spare time. If she couldn't find a thousand-year-old one, she could find a hundred-year-old one and plant it in her space. It would quickly grow into a thousand-year-old ginseng, and then Ning Huaizhi's leg would be saved.

With that in mind, Jiang Yuwei took Ning Huaizhi and the others to buy ingredients. She felt that she had very few seasonings at home, which was not enough to make delicious food, so she simply grabbed some useful seasonings from the pharmacy.

I bought some scallion, ginger, garlic and chili seedlings to make use of the land behind the house. Although the fertile land in my own space is more suitable for farming, living in the village, you can see which family's land is empty. I always take things from my space, and I'm afraid that after a while, the people in my family will become suspicious.

The four of them bought a lot of things before they caught up with Uncle Ning's oxcart and rode it home.

As soon as Uncle Ning's oxcart entered the village, they saw Aunt Zhou waiting anxiously at the entrance. Upon seeing Jiang Yuwei return, Aunt Zhou waved and called out:

"Yuwei, hurry, hurry, go home and check, your house is on fire!"

Upon hearing this, Jiang Yuwei was startled and quickly pulled Aunt Zhou onto the oxcart, then urged Uncle Ning to hurry and take them home.

When Uncle Ning heard that there was a fire, he became even more anxious and drove his oxcart to the east end of the village.

When everyone arrived, Ning Youcai from Aunt Zhou's family was desperately carrying water to put out the fire with his eldest son Ning Tiezhu and youngest son Ning Wu. Ning Huaizhi watched with a gloomy expression as his house was burned to the ground.

Ning Zhao and Ning Wan also grabbed small basins to splash water, and Uncle Ning Wu and Jiang Yuwei and the others were not idle either, they all went to the pond to fetch water to put out the fire. Fortunately, their house was close to the pond, and with everyone's combined efforts, the fire was quickly extinguished.

The house was now just a shell after the fire, but thankfully the fire was put out in time and the wild rabbits kept in the yard were unharmed.

When Ning Zhao and Ning Wan saw that their house was gone, they sat down on the ground and started crying. Jiang Yuwei wanted to cry even more, because this was the little courtyard that she had painstakingly built up, and now it had all been reduced to ashes.

However, as the pillar of the family, Jiang Yuwei certainly couldn't fall down at this time. She quickly used her consciousness to enter the space and calculated the income of the past few days. With the remaining silver today, she had just enough for twenty taels.

The house repairs could no longer be delayed, so Jiang Yuwei took Ning Qiu's hand and said:

"Qiu Mei, I would like to trouble you to go back today and ask the village head to help us find people to repair the house. We will provide two meals. Everyone has work to do in their fields right now, and we will not let anyone who can help work for free. Each person will be paid twenty coins a day. We are not afraid of having many people. This time the house needs to be expanded and extensively repaired, so the more people the better."

Ning Qiu nodded and said:

"I understand, Sister Yuwei. Don't worry, I'll go back and have my dad go find someone."

After saying that, he turned and ran home.

Jiang Yuwei thanked everyone again, and was just about to go home to tidy up when Aunt Zhou stopped her and said:

“Yuwei, your house is burned down like this, so it’s probably uninhabitable. You can make do with staying at my house for the next few days. It’s a bit crowded, but at least you’ll have a place to sleep.”

Jiang Yuwei was extremely grateful to Aunt Zhou's family. If they hadn't discovered the fire in time, the consequences would have been unimaginable if it had spread up the mountain.

Thinking this, Jiang Yuwei smiled at Aunt Zhou and said:

“Aunt Zhou, thank you for discovering this in time. We can’t trouble you anymore. Your house isn’t big, and it would be too much for the four of us to move in. Luckily, it’s hot now, so sleeping outdoors for one night won’t be a problem. I’ll just tidy up a bit tonight and make sure I can sleep. Tomorrow, everyone can come and help fix the roof.”

Seeing that Jiang Yuwei said this, Aunt Zhou didn't say anything more. She sent her family members back to cook dinner, while she stayed to help Jiang Yuwei clean up.

Ning Zhao and Ning Wan were not idle either. They picked up brooms from the yard and started cleaning the kitchen. Jiang Yuwei filled several buckets of water and washed the black soot on the kang and walls several times. It would definitely be unacceptable to sleep with this black smoke inhaled at night.

Aunt Zhou, meanwhile, kept wiping the walls and floor with a rag.

After everyone had finished tidying up, Jiang Yuwei checked the walls one by one to make sure there were no cracks before she felt relieved.
