"Are you crazy, Xiaoyun? How could you gamble with our child's life!"
After saying that, Zhang Tianhe turned around and tried to snatch the child from Jiang Yuwei's hands again. Just then, Jiang Yuwei patted the child's back hard, and the child cried out. Then, a peanut was spat out of the child's mouth and fell to the ground.
Seeing that the child had been saved, Jiang Yuwei breathed a sigh of relief, shoved the child into the hands of Zhang Tianhe, who was still crying out, and glared at him.
"Here you go! The child is alright!"
Jiang Yuwei was already drenched in sweat. She wiped the sweat from her forehead, smiled and nodded at Uncle Ning standing by the door, and then turned to leave.
Seeing this, Xiaoyun quickly grabbed Jiang Yuwei's arm and cried, "..."
"Sister Yuwei, thank you so much. If it weren't for you, my Xiaoman might not be here today. I really don't know how to thank you enough. My Tianhe is a straightforward person, please don't take it to heart, sob..."
Jiang Yuwei was initially angry at the family's actions, wondering why they had come to her if they didn't trust her. However, seeing Xiaoyun crying like this softened her heart, so she reached out and patted Xiaoyun's shoulder, forcing a smile.
"Xiaoyun, go check on the child. Remember not to feed the child foods that are easy to choke on, and don't let the child hold them to play with. It's very dangerous. If the child has a similar situation next time, you can do the same as I just told you."
Aunt Zhang kept nudging Zhang Tianhe from behind, who was holding the child. Zhang Tianhe opened his mouth, wanting to say something, but the words stuck in his throat and he couldn't speak. He was so anxious that his big face turned red.
Jiang Yuwei glanced at Zhang Tianhe, who was standing there dumbfounded, and snorted coldly:
"What's wrong, Tianhe? Did you choke on your food too? Why is your face all red?"
Zhang Tianhe hurriedly handed the child to Xiaoyun, who glared at him angrily. Zhang Tianhe knew he had said and done the wrong thing in his haste, angering his benefactor, Jiang Yuwei. She had first saved his wife's life, and now she had saved his son's. He realized he had acted too rashly. Zhang Tianhe gritted his teeth, as if making a decision.
"Sister Yuwei, I, I, I was wrong just now. I'm a rough person and don't know how to speak properly. Please don't be angry with me. I know you are a benefactor to our family. I just said the wrong thing in my haste. I'm sorry. You can hit me or scold me if you want. I was wrong."
Jiang Yuwei waved her hand and said:
"No need, I wouldn't dare to hit or scold you. I have things to do at home, so I'll be leaving now."
After saying this, Jiang Yuwei didn't wait for the Zhang family's reply and turned to leave. Xiao Yun, still shaken and holding the child, glared at Zhang Tianhe and said angrily:
"Watch your mouth from now on. I heard that Sister Yuwei collects wood ash and paper mulberry bark at home. Mother, go and get all the wood ash we've saved. Tianhe, tomorrow you and Zhang Guang go to the mountain to peel paper mulberry bark. Take the paper mulberry bark and wood ash to Sister Yuwei. Remember, don't accept any money. We're going to repay her kindness."
Aunt Zhang nodded repeatedly after hearing what Xiaoyun said:
"Yes, yes, we still have some chicken and duck eggs saved up. I'll pack them up and have Tianhe deliver them to Yuwei tomorrow to apologize."
In the courtyard
Ning Huaizhi was waiting for Jiang Yuwei to come home for dinner at the stone table. When he saw Jiang Yuwei return in a huff, he quickly waved to her and said:
"Honey, who made you angry? Come on, I've heated up the food and am just waiting for you to come home."
Jiang Yuwei walked to the stone table and plopped down, looking at the table full of food and asking in confusion:
"Where's Wan'er? Why isn't she eating?"
Ning Huaizhi took the chopsticks and handed them to Jiang Yuwei:
"Wan'er and the others have already eaten and are now back in their rooms sleeping. Daya and Tiezhu ate in the backyard, and they've already finished eating as well. I heard that Tiezhu is busy making more floral paper tonight so you can take it to the bookstore staff to see."
Jiang Yuwei took the chopsticks and nodded. She picked up a bowl of rice and started stuffing it into her mouth. When she was in a bad mood, eating was something that could heal her.
Seeing that Jiang Yuwei was eating so quickly, Ning Huaizhi assumed she was starving and hurriedly put more food from his plate into her bowl.
"Honey, eat slowly, don't choke. If there's not enough food, I'll go and make you some more."
Jiang Yuwei swallowed the rice in her mouth hastily, waved her hand, and said:
"No need, this is enough to eat. I was a little angry, so I ate a bit too fast just now."
Hearing her say this, Ning Huaizhi hurriedly asked with concern:
"What's wrong? Did something make you angry?"
Jiang Yuwei took a sip of water, caught her breath, and then slowly spoke:
"You know, Aunt Zhang's family is something else. They actually fed such a small child. If I had arrived any later today, that child might have really died. And guess what? That ungrateful Zhang Tianhe got angry with me when he saw me saving his child, saying that I was an outsider causing trouble in his house!"
Jiang Yuwei grew angrier as she spoke, put down the bowl, and slapped her thigh hard.
"Tell me, tell me! If you don't believe me, then don't come all the way here to invite me! Oh! You invited me, but you don't believe me! And you even yelled at me!"
Seeing that Jiang Yuwei was truly furious, Ning Huaizhi frowned and said:
“The Zhang family really went too far. That Zhang Tianhe dared to yell at my wife. When I see him again, I’ll shoot him with a slingshot!”
Jiang Yuwei was amused by Ning Huaizhi's words:
“You, you don’t need to hit him. He’s not a bad person, he’s just a bit too straightforward and doesn’t know how to speak properly. I think he knows he was wrong today.”
Seeing Jiang Yuwei smile, Ning Huaizhi smiled too, and placed a piece of meat in Jiang Yuwei's bowl:
"Okay, if my wife says I won't hit him, then I won't. But if he dares to make you angry again, I won't tolerate his behavior!"
The two finished their meal chatting and laughing, and then went back to their rooms to sleep.
Three days later
Jiang Yuwei went to the backyard and packed all the paper that Tiezhu and Ningwu had made into a car. This time, she planned to take Ning Daya with her.
After delivering the paper today, she still had to go to the Xu residence to help prepare lunch. With Daya there, she could lend a hand. The main reason was that she didn't want to face the scheming people in the Xu residence's kitchen alone. With Daya there, she could also prevent Granny Li from tampering with her food again.
Jiang Yuwei left Ning Wan at home with Tie Zhu and Ning Wu, while Ning Huaizhi was in charge of driving the oxcart. After everything was loaded onto the cart, Jiang Yuwei and Ning Daya also got on, and the group headed towards Ping'an Town.
