Ning Wan, who was standing to the side, had been itching to eat the colorful ingredients for a long time. Jiang Yuwei saw that Ning Wan was staring at the pot with longing eyes, her mouth practically watering, and smiled helplessly. She scooped out some ingredients from each small bowl and handed them to Ning Wan.
Here, take this and eat it.
Ning Wan happily took the bowl and said sweetly:
"Thank you, Mother!"
She skipped and hopped over to Ning Daya's side to taste the new treat her mother had made.
Seeing that Ning Daya had finished grinding the soybeans, Jiang Yuwei asked Ning Huaizhi to squeeze out the soybean pulp. After squeezing out the pulp, Jiang Yuwei put the soybeans in a pot to cook, added salt brine to make tofu pudding, and then, when no one was paying attention, she put the tofu pudding into a bucket and took it to the spiritual spring water in her space to chill it.
Jiang Yuwei finished her preparations and was busy until evening. Everyone quickly finished their dinner and went to bed.
next day
Jiang Yuwei and Ning Daya got up early and loaded all the things they were going to sell at the market onto the cart. They also helped Ning Huaizhi and Ning Wan onto the cart. Jiang Yuwei locked the courtyard gate and was about to get into the cart when she saw Chen Guixiang running towards them with Sun Shi from afar.
“Oh dear, Huaizhi, you’re going to the market today, and I’m going with you. I was thinking that since we have our own oxcart, if I take your sister-in-law to ride in Uncle Ning’s oxcart, people will definitely laugh at me and talk about your family behind your back. So, after thinking it over, I decided to bring your sister-in-law to ride in your cart instead. I’m not worried about you leaving early this morning; we got up early too. Ningxin didn’t even get a good night’s sleep and is still whimpering.”
Jiang Yuwei glanced at Ning Xin, who was whimpering on Sun Shi's shoulder, then at her own Ning Wan, who seemed rather timid, and frowned.
“Mother, I know you’re worried about people gossiping behind your back, but I think you don’t need to think too much about it. Anyway, they haven’t come to us yet, so why should we care what they say? You should take your sister-in-law to ride in Uncle Ning’s oxcart. We’re going to pick up Ning Qiu later, and the cart is full of stuff. It really can’t carry so many people.”
Chen Guixiang was immediately displeased upon hearing Jiang Yuwei's words:
"In our Ning family, it's not a woman's place to be in charge. I'm talking to my son, what are you interrupting for? Besides, I don't ride in my own oxcart. Do you think I'm crazy to spend money to ride in someone else's oxcart? And that Ning Qiu, if there's no room, don't take her. Your sister-in-law can help you sell things. If you have spare money to hire someone else, you might as well give the money to your sister-in-law. That way, we can keep the wealth in the family. I don't know what you're thinking with that pig brain all day long."
Jiang Yuwei quickly waved her hand and said:
“Mother, you need to watch your words. This is my oxcart, not yours. This oxcart has nothing to do with you. If you dared to take other people's things like this, you would have been slapped in the face long ago. As for hiring people, I'll say it again: the money is in my hands. I can hire whoever I want. Sun Shi is so cunning. I wouldn't hire her even if she paid me!"
Sun had hoped that if Chen Guixiang could really persuade Jiang Yuwei to pay her to go to the market, the family would have an extra source of income, and she could secretly learn Jiang Yuwei's skills to save money and start her own business later. However, Jiang Yuwei's words were so harsh and showed no respect for Chen Guixiang, which made Sun's face turn red and then pale with anger.
"You, you're talking nonsense! I wouldn't work for you even if you hired me! You're an ingrate, you don't take care of your own people, but you take care of strangers."
Sitting on the oxcart, Ning Daya noticed that Madam Sun was staring intently at her. She immediately lowered her head in embarrassment and whispered:
"Sister Yuwei, if it really doesn't work, I can walk to town. If I walk fast, I'll definitely catch up with you."
Jiang Yuwei got into the car and pressed down on Ning Daya, who was about to get up, and said to her:
"Sit still and relax!"
Seeing this, Chen Guixiang quickly spoke up:
"Yes, yes, that girl, you should walk. You need to know your place. You're a maid hired by the Ning family. How can a maid ride in the same carriage as her master?"
Ning Daya blushed with anxiety upon hearing this. She could walk there, but she didn't want to see Sister Yuwei arguing fiercely with Chen Guixiang because of her. So she tried to get up and get out of the car, but Jiang Yuwei pressed her shoulder firmly against the car and she couldn't move.
Jiang Yuwei smiled and shook her head at Ning Daya, then turned to Chen Guixiang and said coldly:
"What kind of family do you think you are, hiring a maid? How dare you even say that? We're all just peasants toiling in the fields, why are you trying to imitate rich families by hiring maids? Let me tell you today, I treat Daya like a sister. I won't let anyone else walk. As for you two, what are you doing at the market? You don't have any money to spend. Listen to me, go home and wash up and go to bed."
Hearing Jiang Yuwei's words, Ning Daya's eyes immediately reddened. She would listen to Yuwei no matter what. If Yuwei didn't let her walk, she wouldn't get off the bus. So Ning Daya simply stopped looking at Chen Guixiang and Sun Shi and turned her face to the side to talk to Ning Wan.
Seeing this, Chen Guixiang stomped her feet in anger and turned to Ning Huaizhi, cursing:
"Fine, fine, Ning Huaizhi, you've forgotten your mother after getting married. You've grown up so big, daring to go against your mother. I've raised you for nothing, I'd rather have raised a piece of barbecued pork!"
Ning Huaizhi frowned as he looked at his mother and slowly said:
“Mother, it’s not that we don’t want to take you and your sister-in-law, but there’s really no room in this carriage. Why don’t you take Uncle Ning’s oxcart to the market?”
Chen Guixiang's face flushed even more with anger when she saw that even her usually obedient son had said such a thing.
"I'm going to be driven to my death by your whole family sooner or later. Fine, fine, you're all trying to provoke me. Jiang Yuwei, let me tell you, don't think that just because we've separated the family, I can't control you anymore. If I take you to the yamen and accuse you of being unfilial to your elders, I'll ruin your reputation in the entire Ping'an Town. You can forget about doing any business then."
Jiang Yuwei hadn't expected Chen Guixiang to say such a thing, so she stared at her and said in a deep voice:
“If you want to go to the yamen to sue your own son, then go ahead and do so! We believe we have done nothing wrong. Everyone in the village knows what kind of person you are. If you really want to take us to court, then we will naturally accompany you to the end.”
Chen Guixiang was so angry that she couldn't even scare Jiang Yuwei with her words that she fainted. Seeing this, Sun quickly grabbed Chen Guixiang and scolded Jiang Yuwei:
"Well, you've literally driven your mother-in-law to her death!"
