Ning Huaizhi frowned slightly when Ning Wan mentioned Ning Zhao.
"He's still unconscious. I've already ordered someone to take him back to his room to rest. If you're worried about him, go check on him. He won't die anyway."
Ning Wan could tell that Ning Huaizhi was angry. If her brother hadn't caused such a mess, her mother wouldn't have suddenly gone into labor so suddenly. If anything really happened to her mother and the two children in her womb, her father certainly wouldn't let her brother off the hook.
So Ning Wan pursed her lips and, observing the situation, said:
"It's good that everyone is alright, Dad. Can't you be happy? Mom just gave birth to a younger brother and sister. Such a joyous occasion should be announced to the world."
Ning Huaizhi glared at Ning Wan.
"Your brother's matter has already caused quite a stir in the city. It's best to keep a low profile for now and wait until your grandparents return to the capital before making any further statements. As long as they and their child are safe, that's all that matters. I don't ask for anything else."
Having said that, Ning Huaizhi was about to step into the house when the midwife came out and, seeing him about to go in, quickly stopped him with a smile:
"General, this woman's delivery room is full of bad luck. It is not appropriate for someone of your status to enter the room. If you are in a hurry to see the young master and young lady, just tell the maids to bring them out for you to see."
Upon hearing this, Ning Huaizhi's eyes darkened, and he glared at the midwife.
"What are you saying? The child has just been born, how can it be exposed to the wind? My wife risked her life to give birth to this child for me, how could I despise her for being unlucky? I think you are the one who is unlucky. You should hurry up and collect your reward and get out of the mansion."
The midwife hadn't expected Ning Huaizhi to have such a temper. She had only meant well, reminding him that most men considered the delivery room unlucky and wouldn't rush in to check on a woman who had just given birth.
The midwife had originally intended to say a few more auspicious words to Ning Huaizhi to bring him good luck, but she hadn't expected him to give her such a cold shoulder. Judging from his attitude, he was afraid that if she didn't leave soon, he would have her dragged out.
Thinking this, the midwife dared not say anything more, and could only nod frantically before disappearing in a flash...
Once the eyesore was gone, Ning Huaizhi strode into the house. He opened the door carefully, afraid of disturbing Jiang Yuwei and the child. As soon as he entered, he saw Jiang Yuwei lying unconscious on the bed, her face pale.
The bloodstains and bedding around them had just been cleaned up by Xia Yue and Qiu Yue, who were currently tending to the two children. Upon seeing Ning Huaizhi enter, they quickly brought the children to him.
"General, look how much these two children resemble you in their eyes and eyebrows."
Ning Huaizhi merely glanced at it indifferently and smiled.
"She looks more like Madam. It's good that she looks like Madam. Madam is beautiful, so her children will naturally be good too."
After saying that, Ning Huaizhi took Jiang Yuwei's hand with a worried expression.
"How long has the lady been unconscious?"
Qiu Yue noticed Ning Huaizhi's worry.
"General, don't worry. Madam is a little weak after giving birth. Let her rest for a while, and she can eat something to replenish her strength when she wakes up, and she'll feel better."
Ning Huaizhi gave a soft, hoarse "hmm."
"You all go and take care of the children. I'll stay here with Madam."
Xia Yue and Qiu Yue, holding their child, exchanged a glance and quickly stepped aside, not wanting to disturb the general and his wife's time alone.
Ning Huaizhi took out a handkerchief and gently wiped the sweat from Jiang Yuwei's forehead.
"Don't worry, Ning Zhao has been rescued. The woman he tried to save even after jumping into the river has also been brought back to the manor for treatment. It's all that brat's fault. He made me unable to be by your side. I let you bear this life-or-death moment alone. It was my dereliction of duty..."
Ning Huaizhi held Jiang Yuwei's hand and murmured softly, tenderly tucking the blanket around her to keep her warm. He remained motionless on Jiang Yuwei's bed for an hour.
When Jiang Yuwei opened her eyes, she saw Ning Huaizhi's nervous expression.
"Yuwei, you're finally awake. How are you feeling? Should we call the royal physician to take a look at you?"
Jiang Yuwei shook her head, as if she had thought of something, and immediately asked anxiously:
"Huaizhi, how is Zhao'er?"
Ning Huaizhi hadn't expected that even at this point, Jiang Yuwei was still thinking about Ning Zhao. He sighed helplessly, reached out to smooth the stray hairs from her forehead, and said softly:
“Yuwei, don’t be afraid. Ning Zhao has returned home safely. I’ve arranged for a doctor to treat him. He’s a young man, so he’s fine. This little injury is nothing. But you, you went through a life-or-death experience. I couldn’t be by your side. It’s my fault as your husband.”
Jiang Yuwei breathed a long sigh of relief after hearing Ning Huaizhi's words.
"Good, it's good that Zhao'er is alright."
Ning Huaizhi gave a wry smile.
"Zhao'er is alright, but when I went to the river to rescue Ning Zhao today, I secretly mobilized the army. I don't know what the emperor will say at tomorrow's morning court."
Jiang Yuwei frowned slightly.
"No matter what, it's worth it as long as we can save Zhao'er. You'll have to work hard tomorrow, Huaizhi."
Ning Huaizhi touched Jiang Yuwei's cheek.
"Yes, you don't need to worry about these things. I'll take care of them myself. You just need to rest now. I'll have the kitchen bring you the prepared food. Have something to eat first. You haven't had your appetite for several hours. I'm afraid you'll get hungry."
Jiang Yuwei nodded.
"I didn't realize it before, but now that you mention it, I am actually a little hungry."
Ning Huaizhi ordered the food to be brought up, but he wouldn't let Jiang Yuwei get up. Instead, he fed her bite by bite with chopsticks and a bowl himself. Only after Jiang Yuwei had finished eating did he ask Xia Yue to bring the two children to Jiang Yuwei so she could see them.
Ning Huaizhi was afraid that Jiang Yuwei was too weak to see people after giving birth, so he sent away everyone who was waiting in the courtyard to offer their congratulations. He even forbade Ning Wan from entering Jiang Yuwei's room, fearing that she would be too noisy and disturb the baby and Jiang Yuwei.
After giving instructions here, Ning Huaizhi went to Ning Zhao's courtyard. As soon as he entered the room, he saw that Ning Zhao was awake.
Do you know how big of a mess you've made?
Ning Zhao had just regained consciousness. His mind was still hazy as he glanced around at his surroundings. Seeing Ning Huaizhi's sour face, he asked somewhat guiltily:
"Father, how did I get back? Wasn't I just drinking at the Wan Hua Lou?"
"If you can't hold your liquor, then give me less alcohol in the future."
"Yes, I understand, Dad. I won't drink anymore. Um, I remember I saved a woman, that woman..."
"Your mother just came back from the brink of death because of you, and when you woke up, the first person you cared about was a completely unrelated woman. You have truly let your mother down!"
Upon hearing this, Ning Zhao immediately jumped out of bed excitedly and coughed a few times.
What happened to my mother?
