Jiang Yuwei looked up and met the man's handsome but furious eyes:
"Why aren't you running anymore? Don't you all listen to me, the eldest young master of the Xu family?"
Jiang Yuwei waved her hands repeatedly:
No, that's not it.
Before Jiang Yuwei could finish speaking, the young master grabbed her arm and headed towards the backyard.
"Come on, help me change my clothes. I refuse to believe that I can't even order around a maid from the Xu household now."
Jiang Yuwei was so frightened by the young master's actions that she struggled desperately. She had only met Master Xu, Madam Xu, and the second young master before, but had never seen the eldest young master of the Xu family before. She never expected that the eldest and second young masters, who were brothers, would look completely different. As Jiang Yuwei was thinking about how to explain, she faintly smelled the smell of alcohol on the eldest young master.
She was immediately alarmed. He said he was going to change his clothes. Could it be that he was planning to do something indecent to her? Seeing this, Jiang Yuwei didn't care about anything else and kicked the young master in the lower back.
The young master never expected Jiang Yuwei to launch a sneak attack on him. He leaned forward abruptly and fell face-first to the ground.
Upon seeing this, Jiang Yuwei turned around and ran outside without daring to look back. She ran all the way to the Xu residence and burst into tears the moment she saw Ning Huaizhi.
Seeing this, Ning Huaizhi hurriedly asked anxiously:
"Yuwei, what's wrong with you?"
As soon as Jiang Yuwei got into the car, she said:
"Run!"
Ning Huaizhi didn't know what had happened, so he drove the oxcart towards the shops on North Street. On the way, Jiang Yuwei calmed herself down and told Ning Huaizhi everything that had happened at the Xu residence.
Ning Huaizhi's face was terribly grim, and he said in a deep voice:
"Yuwei, are you saying that the eldest young master of the Xu family held your hand?"
Jiang Yuwei nodded with a wronged expression. She didn't know why, but when she was alone before, she could handle anything. Let alone being held a man's hand, she would even fight with knives and guns with men for a bite of food in the apocalypse. Even so, she never shed a single tear.
Jiang Yuwei didn't know why she had become so fragile. Whenever she suffered a little grievance outside, she couldn't help but want to cry when she came home and met Ning Huaizhi's worried eyes.
Ning Huaizhi frowned, a murderous intent flashing in his eyes:
"Next time I see him, I'll chop off his hand!"
Seeing this, Jiang Yuwei quickly patted Ning Huaizhi's shoulder and whispered:
"Well, well, there's no need for that. Just cripple him."
Ning Huaizhi was amused by Jiang Yuwei's words:
"Okay, I'll listen to you, honey. So please don't be sad anymore, okay? Seeing you sad makes me feel worse than if I ate shit!"
Jiang Yuwei frowned:
"Have you ever eaten shit?"
Ning Huaizhi pinched the bridge of his nose, no longer wanting to respond to her.
The two picked up Ning Qiu and Liu Shi at the shop and headed towards Ningjia Village. When they arrived at the courtyard, Ning Daya had already prepared the meal and was waiting for them to return.
Jiang Yuwei brought Liu Shi and Ning Qiu back to the courtyard for dinner. The two of them had been busy all day and had almost finished cleaning the shop. Jiang Yuwei planned to take the fool and Tie Zhu to familiarize themselves with the place tomorrow, and then have them help build a stove and put up a shed in the courtyard.
Jiang Yuwei had already spotted several rose bushes growing at the foot of the mountain. Tomorrow, she would dig them up and transplant them there. She would also transplant the old trumpet vine to the backyard of the shop and build a trellis for it.
After everyone finished their meal chatting and laughing, Jiang Yuwei said to Ning Wu:
"Ningwu, go and see Ningqiu and Liu off. It's dark on the road, so take a lantern."
Seeing this, Liu quickly waved her hand and said:
"No need, no need. Let Ning Wu take Ning Qiu. I'll go back by myself. I know all the roads around here. I won't get lost. I'll be coming here to work every day. I can't have Ning Wu take me every time, can I?"
Seeing that Liu had said this, Jiang Yuwei stopped insisting and let her go back first.
Then he turned to look at Ning Qiu and said:
"Qiu Mei, if you have time tomorrow, come and help out at the paper mill. The shop in town is about to open, and I need to stock up on goods to sell. The pay will be thirty coins a day."
Ning Qiu replied happily:
"Okay, Sister Yuwei, don't worry, I'll come over first thing tomorrow morning."
Seeing Ning Wu leave with Ning Qiu, Jiang Yuwei turned back to Tie Zhu and said:
"When you get back tonight, talk to Aunt Zhou about this. Our paper mill needs to hire a few day workers to help us rush out some orders. If Aunt Zhou is available, ask her to come and work for us."
Tie Zhu laughed upon hearing this:
"Okay, Sister Yuwei, I'll go back and tell my mother right away."
After saying that, Tiezhu went home.
After packing her things, Ning Daya went back to the paper mill at the back to sleep.
Jiang Yuwei and Ning Huaizhi sat in the courtyard looking at the stars in the sky.
Jiang Yuwei looked at Ning Huaizhi's sharply defined profile and said:
"Tomorrow morning I plan to go to Aunt Zhang's house to ask if Zhang Tianhe can come to the paper mill as a long-term worker. I'll also ask Aunt Zhang if she can come as a short-term worker. These next few days I'll need you to stay home and help me carve some different printing patterns. I'm planning to make a few new products and some notebooks."
Ning Huaizhi pondered and asked:
What is a notebook?
"It's the same size as a book, but the cover has different patterns, and the inner pages have different styles, such as lined books, vertical lined books, grid books, blank books, etc..."
As Jiang Yuwei spoke, she used her hands to measure.
Ning Huaizhi was completely bewildered and could only nod and say:
“I don’t understand these things either. As long as you give me the blueprints, I can carve them out.”
Jiang Yuwei patted Ning Huaizhi on the shoulder and smiled:
"I trust you to handle things. Go back to your room and get some sleep."
After saying that, he went back inside to draw blueprints.
next day
Jiang Yuwei handed Ning Huaizhi a thick stack of blueprints early in the morning, explained them to him one by one, and told him to carve a copy of each one to use first.
Then he went to Aunt Zhang's house and stood in the yard calling out:
Is Zhang Tianhe home?
Hearing Jiang Yuwei's shouts, Xiaoyun quickly came out of the house with the child in her arms:
"Sister Yuwei, you're here. Come in quickly, Tianhe is eating inside."
Jiang Yuwei waved her hand and said:
“I won’t go in. Our paper mill is short-staffed right now. I was wondering if Tianhe would be available to work as a long-term laborer for us, for two taels of silver a year. If he is available, we can start today. I have all the documents with me, so you can sign them directly.”
Upon hearing this, Zhang Tianhe hurriedly came out of the house with a steamed bun in his mouth, raising his hands and shouting:
"Sister Yuwei, I'll do it, I'll do it. Thank you so much! You thought of asking about our family before you even thought of doing this. Now that Xiaoman is growing up, there's another mouth to feed in our family. I was thinking of going to town to do odd jobs to support the family, but now I can work right here at home. It's wonderful! Sister Yuwei, you are truly our family's lucky star!"
Jiang Yuwei waved her hand and said:
"Don't say anything else. Just go to the paper mill and work hard. If you don't do well, I can't keep you here. Sign this document first, and go over after you finish eating. Ningwu will teach you how to do it then."
