Chapter 17 The First Pot of Gold

Shen Mingzhi couldn't help but laugh at her words, "Okay, then if I suffer any grievances in the future, I'll leave it all to Sister Wang to take care of."

After the contract was written, Shen Mingzhi and Wang Sao signed it.

"I'm going to pick some herbs. I'll leave Niannian and Xiaozhou to you." Shen Mingzhi put away her contract and said to Aunt Wang.

Aunt Wang looked worried. "Zhizhi, you just gave birth and should be resting. We can make money slowly. If you need money, I'll talk to the Jiang family for you. They definitely won't abandon you."

“As the saying goes, the Jiang family has helped me a lot. Now that I’ve moved out, I can’t trouble them anymore. Besides, I’m just going to gather some herbs, not do any heavy work, so it won’t be a problem. Even if I’m in postpartum confinement, I still need to go out and get some exercise, right?” Shen Mingzhi said, already picking up her carrying pole and bamboo basket and preparing to go out.

"Okay, then don't pick too heavy a load, just take a little, we'll earn the money slowly." Aunt Wang now completely treats her like her goddaughter.

Shen Mingzhi responded and went out.

As she reached the door, the young gatekeeper saw her coming out and casually asked, "Going out to buy something again?"

Shen Mingzhi immediately looked worried: "The children have developed rashes. I'll go pick some medicine to treat them."

"Take him to the health center," the young man said.

"I have no money to give you, I'm leaving now." Shen Mingzhi said helplessly and left the courtyard.

The young man wanted to offer a few more words of advice, but then thought better of it.

Shen Mingzhi went out and it was noon. At lunchtime, she returned with two bamboo baskets of herbs.

As soon as they entered the house, Aunt Wang quickly turned on the electric fan and pulled her over to sit down, saying, "Let me wring out a towel for you."

She walked to the sink stand, took down the towel hanging on it, threw it into the enamel washbasin, soaked it, wrung it out, and returned to Shen Mingzhi's side, deftly wiping her sweat. "Don't get too hot."

"It's not hot." Shen Mingzhi took the towel, reached out and poured herself a glass of cold water. Just as she was about to drink it, Wang Sao snatched the glass away.

"You're in postpartum confinement, you can't drink anything cold!" Aunt Wang poured half the water from the cup onto the ground, picked up the thermos next to her, and poured hot water into it to mix with the water.

Shen Mingzhi hadn't really noticed, after all, she was used to being careless about such details in modern life, and besides, she really had no experience with postpartum care.

In the afternoon, Shen Mingzhi was brewing medicine at home, while Wang Sao took the initiative to help her collect unwanted bottles and jars.

After three days of hard work, she produced the first batch of ointments and fever-reducing patches at a very low cost.

After applying the medicine name "Cooling Plaster", she also put the fever-reducing patch into a small transparent bag.

One bag contains five tablets, which constitutes one course of treatment.

In the evening, when Wang's wife went home, she would help her sell some of the produce. During the day, she would carry a bamboo basket and go out to set up a stall at a busy intersection.

The weather was hot, and the sun was scorching.

Holding a palm-leaf fan in one hand and a medicine bottle in the other, Shen Mingzhi promoted her medicine to a woman holding a child, saying, "This is a family heirloom medicine that can treat prickly heat and rashes in children, and it can also repel mosquitoes. It takes care of both internal and external heat. Buy a bottle and use it in the hot weather; you definitely won't regret it."

"How am I supposed to know if your medicine is effective?" The woman stopped, her face full of suspicion.

“I’m here every day. If the treatment doesn’t work, bring it back and I’ll give you a refund!” Shen Mingzhi wasn’t shy about it. After all, when she was a salesperson, she used to go all over the streets selling medicine, making phone calls, and going to people’s pharmacies. She was often scolded.

"You make it sound so nice, but you don't even have a shop. Do you expect me to go to heaven to find you?" the woman said, waving her hand to leave.

When Shen Mingzhi saw the child in her arms, whose neck was red and swollen with scratches, she stepped forward and stopped her. "Sister, your child's rash is quite severe. Take it back and try it. I live in the Shen family courtyard on West Street. If it doesn't work, come to my house and tell the gatekeeper you're looking for Shen Mingzhi. He'll let you in."

The woman found her rather difficult to deal with and wanted to curse at her.

Shen Mingzhi continued, "A bottle of medicine costs five cents, plus a bag of fever-reducing patches, that's ten cents in total. Going to the clinic would cost more than that. I've given you my address, why don't you try it on the child first? Look how uncomfortable the child is, constantly moving in your arms. I've also had two children, I know how hard it is to be a mother."

"You've had two children?" The woman immediately became interested. Shen Mingzhi was fair-skinned and beautiful, and looked like a young woman who had never suffered any hardship.

She thought it was some student from a health center, out there trying to sell their homemade junk medicine!

"Yes, it was my child who got this disease that I researched it. You can try it now. If it doesn't work, you don't have to pay. It's free!" Shen Mingzhi knew that you had to be shameless to sell, and you absolutely couldn't let go of potential customers.

Her current potential customers are stay-at-home mothers.

"Okay, I'll give it a try," the woman said, walking towards Shen Mingzhi's stall.

Shen Mingzhi quickly brought over the small stool she had brought and placed it behind the woman.

The woman sat down, and Shen Mingzhi unscrewed the bottle's box and presented it to her.

The woman scooped out a little bit, held it to her nose and sniffed it. "Ugh, it's so pungent... but it's quite refreshing."

As she spoke, she applied the medicine to the child's neck.

Shen Mingzhi took the opportunity to tell her, "The humidity here is high. There are hardly any days that are not stuffy throughout the year. Both adults and children have some dampness in their bodies. Children's skin is delicate and their resistance is not as good as ours, so the reaction is more severe. When you go back, buy some Job's tears and cook them with rice into porridge every day. Give it to the children to drink as soup. It works very well."

"Really?" the woman asked as she applied the medicine to the child.

“Of course, if you don’t trust my medicine, you can buy barley from other people, but they won’t pay me. I’m just giving you advice because I see how hard it is for you to take care of the child.” Shen Mingzhi smiled, opened the transparent bag, and took out a fever-reducing patch.

After applying the patch to the child, she smiled and said, "See, he's stopped fussing."

The woman noticed that her child had slowly fallen asleep and muttered, "Is it really that effective?"

“Take this and try it for a few more days. If it doesn’t work, come back and bang on my door!” Shen Mingzhi said generously.

The woman took a banknote out of her bag and handed it to Shen Mingzhi, saying, "I'll try it then."

Shen Mingzhi accepted the money with both hands and said gratefully, "Okay, sister, it works well for you. Please help me promote it. If I have any good medicine in the future, I'll give it to you first."

"Your skin is really nice, what kind of cream do you use? You don't look like you've ever been married," the woman asked before leaving.

Could Shen Mingzhi say that the original owner was naturally beautiful? But she still smiled and said, "It's a family secret recipe. If you want it, I'll make it later. You can come and get it. It might be a bit expensive."
