Chapter Fifty-One: A Duty That Binds One's Life

Since she had never been in charge of the household, the housewarming banquet naturally had little to do with Jiang Mingwei.

Besides watching the servants repair the courtyard every day, she also put away her dowry and various items.

I initially thought the yard was quite large, but after tidying up her things, I realized it was just the right size.

Several empty rooms were also set aside so that she could use them flexibly.

Early in the morning, firecrackers went off outside the General's Mansion, keeping Jiang Mingwei awake.

Hua Cui lifted her off the bed, and after she washed up, she pressed her down in front of the dressing table.

Seeing Jiang Mingwei's sleepy eyes, he reached out and pinched her cheek, then sighed helplessly.

"Miss, wake up! The housewarming banquet starts at noon. You need to be alert and go out to meet the guests. You can't stay in the courtyard and slack off today."

It would have been fine if they hadn't shown up in the past, but today is a joyous occasion for the General's Mansion, so last night Zhou had already gathered everyone together and briefly explained the matter.

Today, everyone must participate, no matter what.

Even if Jiang Mingwei doesn't participate in any activities, she still has to sit at the banquet and act as a mascot.

So she has to go, whether she wants to or not!

Sigh, life is tough...

"Don't worry, although your young lady is a bit lazy, she wouldn't run away at the last minute. Besides, there will always be good food at the banquet, right? Just think of it as going to freeload a meal."

Jiang Mingwei yawned and comforted herself.

Hua Cui chuckled, said nothing more, and quickly helped her mistress with her makeup.

Jiang Mingwei was in a daze, her mind wandering, and she couldn't remember what year or day it was when she attended the party in her past life.

She spends all her time either writing papers or reading literature at school; she has no time to go out and have fun.

Now we can play to our hearts' content.

Unfortunately, apart from catching up on the sleep she had missed and escaping this cage, she didn't want to do anything else!

After an unknown amount of time, Hua Cui's joyful voice reached my ears.

"Alright, Miss."

Jiang Mingwei slowly opened her eyes, looked at the person in the bronze mirror, and was slightly taken aback.

In the mirror, her face was fair and delicate, her almond eyes held a hint of autumn water, and her flowing hair made her face look gentle and beautiful. With her superior face shape and features, she was so stunning that one couldn't help but admire her at first glance!

Although I knew the original owner was naturally beautiful, I never expected that after being carefully dressed up today, she would be so stunningly beautiful...

Thinking back to my past life, I was practically a mongrel.

"What do you think, Miss? This hairstyle is elegant without being overly flashy, making you look very gentle!"

Knowing that Jiang Mingwei no longer liked fancy and complicated clothes as before, and that her clothes today were also rather plain, Hua Cui dressed herself in a simple and elegant style.

Finally, they didn't forget to insert a few pearl hairpins into her hair.

The finishing touch made her face even more radiant and charming.

One glance is enough to make one's heart flutter.

"Putting everything else aside, Hua Cui, your skills are really amazing. You could be a stylist."

Jiang Mingwei turned around and praised her enthusiastically.

Hua Cui's face was full of confusion. "Miss, what is a stylist?"

"Well... how should I explain it to you? Basically, it's someone who does makeup and styling for girls!"

After thinking for a long time, Jiang Mingwei couldn't come up with a suitable word, so she could only speak reluctantly.

To everyone's surprise, Hua Cui suddenly grinned.

"Oh, this! Every maid is responsible for styling and makeup for her mistress. This is something we servants are supposed to learn. Otherwise, how would the mistress dress and groom herself? In that case, wouldn't every maid be a stylist?"

Hua Cui smiled, her eyes crinkling, looking absolutely adorable.

Hearing these words, Jiang Mingwei felt a sudden pang of sadness in her heart.

That's right, these girls are all incredibly skilled.

It's not just about the flowers, but also about many more of her.

He spent his whole life helping his mistresses with their grooming and dressing, making them radiant and dazzling.

In modern times, this would be considered a very respectable, even fashionable, job!

In ancient times, when people were devoured without spitting out the bones, they could only be confined to their courtyards. No one would remember their contributions, and it was only right that they did their best.

However, if there is even the slightest mistake in the makeup or styling, they are the first to be punished.

Unfortunately, Jiang Mingwei understood, but her strength was too weak to do anything.

With a helpless sigh, she got up and dressed.

Hua Cui was unaware of Jiang Mingwei's inner turmoil and struggle, and quickly took the dress from her.

After helping her put it on, Hua Cui took two steps back, her eyes filled with undisguised amazement.

"Miss, the clothes you designed are so beautiful! I've never seen anything like them before!"

"Yeah?"

Lifting her skirt, Jiang Mingwei stood in front of the bronze mirror, where she could see her entire body.

I realized that the flower extract was not a compliment, but a genuine expression of my feelings.

The layers of the skirt spread out like waves, the fabric flowing gracefully, giving it an ethereal feel. As the breeze caressed her and she moved, it was as if a wisp of mist lingered around her.

Adorned with moon-white silver threads on her bodice and cuffs, Jiang Mingwei looked as beautiful as a fairy under the moon, aloof and solitary.

"You look stunning! I was worried that you, Miss, might be overshadowed by those ladies because of your simple attire, but now I see that you have a unique kind of beauty!"

"Alright, little girl, you're so sweet-talking. It's getting late, let's go."

Jiang Mingwei smiled and tapped her forehead.

After tidying up a bit, the two headed towards the banquet.

Today, male and female guests are received separately.

The male guests gathered in the front hall, while the female guests naturally stayed in the back garden, next to the Zhou family's courtyard.

She didn't come out early, but it wasn't time yet, and not many guests had arrived.

Jiang Mingwei stepped forward and greeted Zhou.

Today, Zhou was dressed in a dark brown long dress with gold-embroidered white birds, which made her look elegant and dignified, even concealing some of her usual meanness and malice.

Sitting there, she was an extremely dignified old lady.

Seeing Jiang Mingwei dressed simply, in a lake-blue dress, he found her increasingly displeasing after glancing at the several elegantly dressed young ladies not far away.

She lowered her voice and scolded angrily, "Don't you know what day it is today? Why are you dressed so shabbily! Anyone who didn't know better would think that the General's Mansion is cursed against you."

"Go back and change into something festive and stylish, don't make a fool of yourself here for no reason!"

Jiang Mingwei's lips twitched, and for a moment she was unsure whether Zhou's grief over Wei Zhi's passing was genuine or not.

Which is more important, one's own pride or one's son?

Seeing that Jiang Mingwei remained unmoved, Zhou was furious and reprimanded her again.

"Didn't you hear me tell you to go back and change your clothes?"

“Mother-in-law, my husband has only recently passed away. If I were to wear bright red and green, I fear it would cause gossip. Besides, my husband has passed away, and I have no desire to dress elaborately anymore. I beg you to understand.”

She lowered her voice and spoke in a tone that only the two of them could hear.

As expected, Zhou's expression stiffened slightly.

Clearly, even if she cried her heart out on ordinary days, today she was so happy that she completely forgot about her own son!
