Chapter Thirty-Eight: Not Burying Grievances in One's Heart

Wei Jing put his hands behind his back, his thin lips pressed tightly together, and remained silent for a long while before leaving.

Qingfeng glanced at Lu Yun and quickly followed.

When the two returned to the house, they didn't see Lu Yun's upturned lips and the determined look in her eyes...

"Second Master, please forgive my bluntness, but who should we entrust with the power of managing the household? Even if it is in your own hands, Second Master, it cannot be given to the Lu family!"

“She almost harmed you before, you can’t repay kindness with evil.”

"If there is war, we will have to set off immediately. How will we have time to manage the inner quarters?"

Wei Jing spoke calmly, silencing Qingfeng with a single sentence. Qingfeng was frantic, but in the end, he could only sigh helplessly.

"Then why not... give it to the old lady?"

Although Zhou had attacked Wei Jing last time, she was still Wei Jing's mother and held the title of elder, so her actions were more legitimate than Lu Yun's.

But as soon as he finished speaking, Qingfeng regretted it.

What kind of mess is this? It's like trying to pick the best among the worst; all they have are shoehorns!

Wei Jing narrowed his eyes slightly, holding a brush and continuing to write his insights on military strategy on the paper, his tone low and languid.

"No rush. After Mother finds it tomorrow, she'll probably know who to give it to."

...

"You insolent brat, what else do you have to think about? Hand over the housekeeper's keys to me right now! I am your mother, the mistress of this Wei family! If you don't hand them over to me, who else do you intend to give them to?"

As expected, Wei Jing was summoned to Shuofeng Pavilion.

Before he could even sit down, Zhou, who was in the main seat, angrily leaned on her cane and began cursing him, spitting as she did so.

Even with a full head of white hair, he was still full of energy, and the fierceness in his eyes was undisguised, shooting towards Wei Jing like long nails.

I wish I could beat him to a pulp so that I could feel some peace of mind.

Wei Jing remained unmoved, listening calmly to Zhou's insults, his chin slightly raised.

"Although Mother is an elder, she is getting old and should have handed over the power of managing the household to my sister-in-law long ago, but Mother has been reluctant to relinquish the power!"

"Besides, the General's Mansion was bestowed upon my son by His Majesty, so it is naturally up to my son to manage. My son is not yet married, so it is reasonable for him to appoint someone to manage the household affairs. Mother, there is no need to be angry about this."

Zhou's pupils constricted; she hadn't expected Wei Jing to dare to contradict her.

What does this mean?

Could it be that Jiang Mingwei rejected him? Is he not planning to hand over the power of housekeeping to me?

"You bastard! The Wei family raised you. Although I am not your biological mother, I have still been kind to you. Is this how you repay me?"

"Alright, as you said, you decided on the power of housekeeping, and you handed it over to Jiang Mingwei. Did she accept it? She rejected you!"

Zhou gave a cold snort, narrowed her eyes, and spoke with a barbed tone.

"Don't think that just because Zhi'er is dead, you adulterous couple dare to act recklessly under my nose! As long as I live, I will protect the family for my son, and no one will be allowed to tarnish his reputation!"

"Mother, please be careful with your words."

Wei Jing looked up, his gaze sharp, never expecting Zhou Shi to utter such foul language.

With his hands clenched into fists at his sides, his attitude was respectful, but his tone had become threatening.

"My sister-in-law and I are completely innocent and upright, and everything we have done is in accordance with propriety! Is Mother expressing her dissatisfaction with us, or is she trying to disgrace my elder brother's reputation?"

"Shut up! How dare you compare yourself to Zhi'er!"

Zhou was furious. She stood up shakily and pointed at Wei Jing's nose, cursing him angrily.

Granny Wang hurriedly stepped forward to help her up. Seeing that Wei Jing's back was straight and his face was as cold as the moon, she couldn't help but sigh helplessly and tried to smooth things over.

"Why bother, Second Young Master? The steward should have been the Old Madam's person all along. Now that you are the son, hand him over to the Old Madam as soon as possible. She will take care of everything in the General's Mansion for you, so that you will have no worries."

Why must a mother and son be so irreconcilable?

Although Zhou did not speak, her eyes were fixed on Wei Jing like hooks.

It looked like they were waiting for me to bring out the housekeeper's key right away.

Looking at the greed and malice in their eyes, Wei Jing suddenly felt nauseous.

Although he was nominally raised by the Wei family from childhood, he would probably have frozen or starved to death long ago if it weren't for his elder brother's constant care!

Raising children to adulthood and raising them well are two completely different concepts.

He didn't die simply because fate had no other choice.

Wei Jing could almost imagine that if he handed over the power of housekeeping, his life would be just as miserable as before.

Even now, he thought of someone else who was also living a life of misery: Jiang Mingwei.

The two of them were among the least favored in the Wei family, and were the thorns in Zhou's side that she most wanted to get rid of.

But ironically, they couldn't do anything to either of them.

Once she takes over the household, Jiang Mingwei will likely suffer from lack of food and clothing and be in unbearable pain.

If that's the case, then if the butler has to hand it over beforehand, he will naturally choose the one that's easy to control.

In this way, you can still live a peaceful life!

Having made up his mind, Wei Jing's eyes gradually turned cold and resolute as he looked up at Zhou Shi.

"Mother is getting old, so I won't entrust you with the management of the household. After we go to the General's Mansion, your courtyard will be quiet and pleasant, perfect for your retirement. At your age, Mother should enjoy her old age and be happy playing with her grandchildren."

His face was aloof, and his back was ramrod straight.

Her broad shoulders and narrow waist were perfectly showcased by the clothes.

He felt no remorse for what Zhou had said. After finishing his sentence, he flicked his robe and immediately turned to leave.

He looked blank and unresponsive. I never expected him to actually leave like that, showing no respect whatsoever to his mother.

Feeling utterly humiliated, Zhou almost hysterically began to curse.

"You worthless bastard, stop right there!"

Wei Jing stopped and turned to look coldly at Zhou Shi.

"Are you really not going to give me the housekeeper's key? Let me tell you, this is your only chance. If you don't give it to me today, don't expect to come to me for help if any trouble arises in the future."

"I will not help you in the slightest. You are a heartless wretch and not worth it!"

"Mother, rest assured. Since I chose this person, I will definitely take responsibility for him. Mother, please enjoy your retirement and don't ask too many questions, otherwise you will get angry and harm your health."

After saying that, he took two steps forward.

For some reason, I suddenly remembered how Jiang Mingwei used to argue with Zhou Shi, refusing to be wronged or suffer losses.

He suddenly stopped, turned his head and added, "However... Mother keeps calling me a bastard, I wonder if she has forgotten that I was registered under Mother's name by Father as soon as I was born, and can be considered a legitimate second son!"

"Mother, do you have some grievance against yourself that you're insulting me like this?"

After saying that, he strode away.

With the sun shining brightly outdoors, Wei Jing felt an unprecedentedly cheerful and comfortable mood!

It turns out that not having to bury your grievances in your heart is so pleasant and refreshing...
