Chapter Twenty-Two: The White Moonlight and Mosquito Blood

Since taking Wei Jing as her illegitimate son, the relationship between Zhou and Master Wei has deteriorated further.

The couple almost broke up.

She never understood why her husband, with whom she had lived in perfect harmony and mutual respect, would suddenly have a mistress.

She was always good at planning, and she didn't get a single word or piece of information!

Left with no other choice, they asked someone to investigate, and finally found some clues about the woman.

The woman's name was Wan Niang. She lived in Qingping Lane on the outskirts of the city. She was the daughter of a down-on-his-luck scholar and passed away after giving birth to Wei Jing.

Zhou was so angry that she beat her chest and stamped her feet, hating that she hadn't been able to catch the little bitch herself and beat her to death!

How dare she seduce her own husband?

But she still kept a watchful eye and asked others what the woman looked like that could bewitch her husband so much that he was willing to elevate his lowly concubine's son to the status of legitimate son.

Then, based on the accounts of the people, a portrait was drawn.

Zhou glanced at the painting once, her face turned ashen, and she rushed towards Master Wei's study like a madwoman.

No one dared to stop her; they could only watch her go mad until Master Wei returned, by which time the study was already a complete mess.

And she finally found a painting in a hidden compartment of the bookshelf.

She had seen this painting when she was newly married.

The woman in the painting is dressed in white, with eyebrows and eyes as distant as mountains, and a red mole at the corner of her eye that makes her look alluring and charming, like a fairy from heaven.

At that time, she and Master Wei had been married for a short time and their life was quite blissful, so she didn't pay much attention to it and just regarded it as an ordinary painting of a lady.

But the woman in the painting looks exactly like that bastard's mother.

This is the mother from that night!

It turns out that long before their marriage, Master Wei had already secretly conceived a child with that slut!

Seeing that she was about to destroy the painting, Master Wei's eyes turned bloodshot: "Are you insane! You vicious woman, dare to touch this painting today?"

"This slut seduced my husband, what do I have to be afraid of?"

Madam Zhou wasn't going to tolerate Master Wei either. The two of them fought over it, and with a tearing sound, the painting was finally ruined...

Enraged, Master Wei turned around and slapped Zhou across the face!

"You wicked woman! You wicked woman! Do you know what you've done? This painting is so important; it's meant to be..."

Master Wei paused halfway through his sentence, as if remembering something.

His eyes were sharp and piercing, yet he remained silent.

Zhou Shi, however, thought he was just feeling sorry for Wan Niang, that lowly woman, and her resentment only deepened.

It was only after that that Zhou realized that Wan Niang was Master Wei's beloved.

And she was nothing more than a grain of white rice, or the blood of an annoying mosquito!

Wei Zhi and Wei Jing were not much different in age, but Master Wei clearly cared more about Wei Jing, which further fueled Zhou's anger.

Wei Jing is the child of her husband and his beloved, yet he is to be registered under her name. As the legitimate son, how could Zhou not hate him?

She absolutely hated it!

If it weren't for the death of her own son, and the two of them returning to the capital in triumph, Zhou might have truly poisoned Wei Jing with a cup of poisoned wine for the sake of her eldest son's future career!

After listening to what Granny Song had to say, Jiang Mingwei shivered and quickly poured herself a glass of wine to warm herself up. She looked up and met his half-smiling gaze.

"Now that I have told you, Madam, I wonder what your thoughts are? Are you frightened?"

"I...I," Jiang Mingwei had drunk quite a bit, and the alcohol was gradually taking effect. She patted her chest and said, "What do I have to be afraid of? I have nothing to fear, I have nothing to be afraid of!"

Granny Song chuckled, assuming that Jiang Mingwei was drunk.

"Now that your doubts have been resolved, please return. This old woman will not see you off."

Jiang Mingwei nodded. Having received so much information, she did indeed need to go back and process it.

But her mind was foggy at that moment, and she felt as if some thread was pulling her toward something...

But I was too dizzy to think clearly for a moment.

"Thank you for your guidance today, Granny Song. However, I have another question I would like to ask. Since you've brought it up, would you please answer it for me?"

After their conversation, Granny Song's opinion of Jiang Mingwei changed considerably.

"Please ask, Madam."

"Granny, where did you serve before? I noticed you and Granny Wang didn't get along at all, so I imagine you didn't have a good relationship with your mother-in-law either. Why is that..."

"Why haven't they killed them yet, right?"

Granny Song gave a cold laugh: "No matter how bad I am, I'm still a registered old nanny in the palace. If they want to kill me, they'll have to ask the royal family if they're willing!"

What?!

My mom, my grandma, my head has turned into a big date!

Jiang Mingwei instantly sobered up and looked at Granny Song in shock.

No wonder she always felt that Granny Song had an arrogance that none of the Wei family members had ever shown. She really was different from people from big cities.

But she remembered that Master Wei's highest official rank was only fourth grade, and her husband Wei Zhi was only a fifth-grade general. It wasn't until Wei Jing that he made significant achievements.

Such an official family would not stand out even in the capital, so why would there be an old palace maid here?

Before the original owner of this body was married, the Jiang family had a governess from the palace, because her father was the Grand Secretary.

In ordinary families, unless there is a woman of marriageable age waiting to be married into the palace, the palace matrons would not come to educate and raise her.

So, what gives the Wei family the right?

Jiang Mingwei's mind raced, as if a fog was obscuring her thoughts.

"Then may I ask... why is Granny here in the Wei family? This family is not of high social standing, and should not be qualified to hire a senior nanny as experienced as you."

Granny Song gave a soft hum, then looked at Jiang Mingwei with admiration and a sentimental expression.

“Madam is, after all, the daughter of the Grand Secretary, and she is not entirely stupid. I misjudged her before. Since I have stayed, I must have my own responsibilities. Madam need not ask any more questions. I have told you everything you want to know. Please go back.”

After saying that, he lowered his head and drank alone.

Jiang Mingwei opened her mouth, but then realized she probably wouldn't get any answers today.

Well, she's already had enough information to process.

So he bid farewell to Granny Song and went to his bedroom alone.

A gentle evening breeze blew, the moon and stars were few and far between. Jiang Mingwei pondered Song Mama's words for a long time before slowly walking forward...

Because of the alcohol, his steps were slightly unsteady and his body swayed.

A gentle breeze stirred her hair, making it dance in the air. Paired with her moon-white ruqun (a type of traditional Chinese dress), she truly possessed the beauty of a fairy descended from the moon.

Unfortunately, no one appreciated her presence, so she could only return to her room to rest alone.

But she didn't see the tall, slender figure at the courtyard gate, gazing at her intently, his eyes flickering with light and shadow, his heart pounding uncontrollably...

It wasn't until long after Jiang Mingwei left, and a gust of cold wind swept by, that he came back to his senses.

They concealed themselves from everyone and headed towards Granny Song's room...

After washing up, Jiang Mingwei fell asleep the moment her head hit the pillow.

She slept until the morning of the next day.

After getting up, she rubbed her temples.

Fortunately, there was no counterfeit alcohol in ancient times, and since people drank less, it didn't cause much of a hangover.

After having breakfast, Jiang Mingwei lay on the chaise lounge, leisurely basking in the sun.

No husband, and no need to pay respects to my mother-in-law morning and evening... Hehe, that's so great!

But suddenly, she remembered what Granny Song had said.

The clues that failed to connect last night have now come together in a straight line...
