Chapter Twenty-One: Winning Hearts and Minds

Before we knew it, night had fallen.

In the dimly lit room, Granny Song sat alone at the table, sewing cloth clothes.

Even though there were new clothes that Jiang Mingwei had sent over by Hua Cui on the couch, she didn't intend to wear them and continued to mend her old clothes.

Knock, knock, knock, the door was suddenly knocked on.

"Who is it?" she asked in a hoarse voice.

"It's me."

A clear, unhurried female voice came from outside the door: "Please trouble Granny Song to open the door."

Granny Song recognized Jiang Mingwei's voice and, looking puzzled, got up to open the door.

As expected, Jiang Mingwei was standing at the door.

Granny Song looked at her with the same cold gaze as always, sizing up Jiang Mingwei and asking in confusion.

"It's so late, what brings you here, Madam? If there's nothing else, please leave. I need to rest, so please excuse me."

As she was about to close the door, Jiang Mingwei raised her hand to block it from the door frame, smiling at Granny Song.

"Isn't the nanny still awake?"

As she spoke, she peeked into the room and said, "Is she mending clothes? Didn't Hua Cui bring new clothes for Granny? Why isn't Granny wearing them? If she doesn't like them, I'll send someone to bring her new ones!"

"No need, thank you for your kindness, Madam. I'm just an old man and I won't live much longer, why waste new clothes? I have enough to wear."

“That won’t do!” Jiang Mingwei said firmly. “The weather is getting colder and colder. Your clothes are too thin. You should wear something thicker.”

"Besides, that Granny Wang went too far today. Just take it as my order as the lady and put it on."

Granny Song looked at Jiang Mingwei with a deep gaze, her shrewdness sending chills down one's spine.

"Alright, Madam, stop playing coy with this old servant. What brings you here today?"

Seeing Song Mama's straightforwardness, Jiang Mingwei stopped being coy and smiled gently.

She held up the food box and a pot of bamboo-infused wine.

When her gaze fell upon Zhu Qingjiu, a glint of light flashed subtly in Song Mama's eyes.

Jiang Mingwei was secretly delighted. It was worth the effort she had made to inquire about Song Mama, who had no hobbies and only enjoyed having a drink or two on a regular basis.

"Of course I came here specifically to thank Granny for telling my second brother what happened to me. Otherwise, I'm afraid I wouldn't have been able to escape punishment today."

Granny Song was slightly taken aback, her eyes filled with suspicion.

"What is Madam saying? This old servant does not understand."

“Granny, there’s no need to do good deeds anonymously. Besides you, only Hua Cui knows that my mother-in-law summoned me today.”

"But she stayed by my side the whole time, so she naturally didn't have a chance to call for help. Apart from the kind-hearted nanny, there was probably no one else who could help."

She calmly analyzed the situation, and seeing that Granny Song remained silent, Jiang Mingwei sighed and shook her head.

"Very well, since you are unwilling to admit it and have anything to do with me, just consider it wishful thinking on my part. Farewell."

After saying that, he picked up the bamboo wine and turned to leave.

Granny Song smacked her lips, thought about it again and again, and finally spoke helplessly.

"etc!"

Jiang Mingwei's disappointment vanished instantly, replaced by smugness in her eyes.

Not long after entering the room, four delicate side dishes were placed on the table. Jiang Mingwei took out wine cups and wine pots and poured wine for Granny Song.

She was, after all, the mistress, and Song Mama was naturally unwilling, but she couldn't go against Jiang Mingwei's wishes, so she had no choice but to sit down.

In the candlelight, the expression on his face as he looked at Jiang Mingwei was particularly complex.

"Even if Madam knows that it was this old servant who summoned the Second Master, there's no need for this. What exactly do you want from this old servant?"

"Granny is always cautious; I suppose you haven't had a good time in the manor these past years? Why did you choose my courtyard in the first place?"

Jiang Mingwei did not directly state her purpose, but instead drank a few cups with Granny Song first.

Seeing her put her wine glass on the table, he snorted coldly.

"Does Madam really want to know?"

"nature."

"This old servant has spoken, please don't be angry, Madam. It's because you are a person who doesn't manage things, weak and incompetent, but you are not harsh on your subordinates, so I chose to live here in a cowardly manner."

"Unexpectedly, Madam seems like a completely different person now. Not only does she dare to fight against Zhou, but she also shows more pity for this old servant who is about to die. It really makes one suspicious!"

A cold sweat broke out on Jiang Mingwei's back as the eagle-like eyes swept over her, but she had no choice but to maintain a fake smile.

Since she traveled to the present, everyone has only felt that her personality has changed, but only Granny Song has seen the light and suspected that she may have been replaced.

This keen insight truly terrified Jiang Mingwei!

"Perhaps because they have been oppressed for so long, they naturally learned to resist and will no longer compromise in the future."

"But since you've been so frank, I won't hide anything from you either!"

Jiang Mingwei raised her wine glass and toasted Granny Song.

“The old nanny is an elder in the household, and she was able to persuade my second brother to come and rescue me. She must have had a deep deal with him. I want to know about what happened to my second brother before.”

"Although he is not his mother's biological son, he is the only son in the Wei family. Why does his mother-in-law still hate him so much?"

She spoke in a calm tone, but Song Mama's face suddenly stiffened, revealing a hint of coldness, as if she was about to lose her temper.

Jiang Mingwei had no choice but to quickly add, "To be honest, my second brother and I have both offended our mother-in-law. From now on, we're in the same boat. The more I understand him, the easier it will be for me to help him. Please give me your guidance, Granny!"

After speaking, he stood up, raised his hand, and bowed to the old woman, displaying a humble and polite attitude.

Granny Song's ashen face eased somewhat, and she looked up at Jiang Mingwei with a deep gaze.

After a long while, he poured himself another glass of wine, tilted his head back, and drank it down.

"You've been with the Wei family for three years now, and you know absolutely nothing about these things?"

Jiang Mingwei's lips twitched. How could she possibly know?

The original owner was a coward and incompetent person, either being bullied by the Zhou family or busy having secret meetings with her lover.

If she were to care, it would be about her husband. Why would she bother to understand a younger brother-in-law who had nothing to do with her?

Seeing Jiang Mingwei's embarrassed expression and silence, Granny Song snorted coldly.

"Very well, no matter what the lady was like before, she has changed now. This old servant can tell you, but I also hope that you will keep your promise. If the second young master is in trouble, remember to lend a helping hand. Do not be a heartless person!"

"Of course, don't worry, Granny."

Jiang Mingwei smiled obsequiously as she listened to Granny Song's detailed explanation.

As she knew, Wei Jing was the son of a concubine.

Master Wei never took a concubine in his life, and Zhou always believed that she was favored.

Until one day, Master Wei brought back a baby from outside, saying that it was his concubine's child and that he wanted to register it under her name as his second legitimate son.

Zhou, who had been immersed in happiness, was stunned.

She always thought her husband loved her unconditionally, but he secretly had a child with her?!

Zhou refused to register her son, a lowly child, under her own name.

But this matter was not something she could decide.

After Wei Jing's name was added to the family genealogy, Zhou hated him intensely.

Little did she know, this was only the beginning of her suffering...
