Chapter 23 The Poisoned Apple and the Kiss
Song Heng reverted to his nonchalant and lazy demeanor, and he twitched the corner of his mouth, "If you hadn't been the one who sabotaged Su Su behind her back, then I would have let it go this time. But... Xia Zhen, you better not let me catch you doing it again."
No matter what Xia Zhen says or does, her image is not very credible in his mind.
Xia Zhen was so angry she laughed. This person had come into her house and inexplicably warned her, implying that he would come looking for her if anything happened to Tang Susu.
Xia Zhen watched the boy's departing figure and called out, "Song Heng."
Song Heng stopped and turned around to look at her.
Xia Zhen smiled slightly, "I'll let it go this time since you came to me with something unfounded. But if it happens again, I definitely won't be so polite to you."
Their eyes met, and an invisible battle ignited.
Song Heng paused for a moment, and he was the first to look away. He chuckled meaninglessly and turned to leave.
Xia Zhen didn't think much of it before, but now she just feels that Song Heng is becoming more and more disgusting.
Before remembering her identity as a transmigrator, Xia Zhen, as a proud and privileged young woman, naively believed that Song Heng treated her differently.
For example, many girls had a crush on him, but he never gave them hope or a chance. He always kept a distance from women.
But Xia Zhen was slightly different to him.
Perhaps because of the meager friendship they shared in childhood, or perhaps because of the close relationship between their families, Song Heng would give Xia Zhen a gift every year on her birthday. Although it was unclear whether his family forced him to give her a gift, Xia Zhen was certainly the first person for whom he would personally give her a gift.
When he was young, someone once tentatively asked Song Heng if he would marry Xia Zhen in the future. Song Heng was always impatient with this topic, but he never explicitly denied it.
Unconsciously, this gave others a certain perception, and even Xia Zhen had this wrong perception.
In fact, Xia Zhen would sometimes be in a daze. If she hadn't remembered everything at the banquet that day, would she have become a vicious female supporting character who would abandon her self-respect and pride for a man, just like the plot would have?
But none of that matters anymore, because there are no "what ifs" in this world.
Xia Zhen sighed again as her gaze fell on the small yellow flowers in the vase. Two days was indeed a long time, and she needed to find something to distract herself.
When it was completely dark, Xia Yu, the workaholic who left early and returned late, finally got off work and went home. Compared to usual, he was relatively early today.
During the meal, Xia Yu glanced at his daughter sitting across from him without making a sound, before casually asking, "How's it going at the new school?"
Xia Zhen took a sip of soup and casually replied, "It's fine."
"I heard that the academic pressure at No. 1 High School is very high and the workload is very heavy."
Xia Zhen thought for a moment, "Really? I think it's alright."
Seeing her relaxed expression, Xia Yu guessed that she definitely didn't intend to study seriously, but that didn't matter. As the eldest daughter of the Xia family, she didn't need to follow the path of changing her destiny through knowledge like most people.
Xia Yu asked again, "Did that kid from the Song family come by today?"
Xia Zhen nodded. "Yes, I've been here."
What's he doing here?
"Warning me not to bully Tang Susu."
Upon hearing this, Xia Yu frowned, his expressionless face showing little change in emotion, yet exuding an air of authority without anger. "You suffered a loss?"
Xia Zhen shook her head and smiled, "No."
Xia Yu's brows relaxed slightly, but in his heart he was thinking that he used to think Song Heng was a promising investment, but he never expected that the kid could so easily cause trouble for his daughter for someone else.
He needs to carefully consider whether he should find a more valuable investor while there's still time.
Xia Zhen suddenly said, "I want to go shopping tomorrow."
Xia Yu gave a flat "hmm".
Xia Zhen exaggeratedly stretched out her hand and said, "Dad, I want to buy lots and lots of clothes, as well as shoes and bags. I should get some new ones too."
He gave another "hmm" without any emotion.
Xia Zhen complained softly, "I saw my former classmates showing off their new dresses in the group chat, and I don't want to lose to them."
Xia Yu finally showed some other reaction. He nodded slightly, "Very good. Our Xia family should not lag behind others. I have to go on a business trip tomorrow. I have already told them not to let him into our house."
To put it bluntly, he was still worried that Xia Zhen would suffer a loss.
That evening, Xia Zhen's phone received another bank transfer record.
She lay in bed in a good mood and tapped the pink icon on her phone screen. The empty little house looked different from the empty one before.
Besides having a table and a lamp, now there's also a bed.
The frail child no longer had to huddle in the corner; he could now rest in bed. But even with a bed, he didn't seem to be able to rest well. His small body was huddled on his side under the thin blanket, his tightly furrowed brows never relaxing, as if he were enduring some immense pain.
Xia Zhen immediately noticed the new scar on the boy's wrist. She sat up abruptly, brought her phone closer, and examined it carefully for a long time. After confirming that she was not mistaken, her heart sank.
It is 10:40 PM now.
Xia Zhen drew back the curtains and could see the quiet night outside the window. Rationally, she should stay at home, but as a young person, she couldn't help but act impulsively.
She first changed her clothes, picked up a backpack, put a bunch of small anti-wolf items inside, and then quietly slipped out of the Xia family villa.
We couldn't disturb her father, so we couldn't ask Uncle Zhao to drive her, but luckily, having a mobile phone makes everything very convenient these days.
Xia Zhen booked a taxi on a ride-hailing app. There weren't many cars on the road at night, and the journey, which usually takes more than forty minutes, only took her thirty minutes.
She had originally planned to go upstairs, but when she reached the door, she suddenly had a different premonition. She changed direction, and sure enough, in the place where that stubborn boy usually secretly did rehabilitation training, she saw that familiar figure.
The boy in the wheelchair lowered his head, quietly holding the white kitten in his arms. The bright moonlight made him seem even more aloof. His white hair and fair skin were flawless. He seemed to be in a white world, and in this world, he was all alone.
The boy gently stroked the little white cat's hand, and the faint scars on his wrist looked even more shocking under the moonlight.
Just like the kitten in his arms, he felt as if he had been abandoned by everyone.
A long shadow was cast over.
He looked up, and the girl's figure came into view.
She wore a green floral dress today, the tiny yellow flowers on it swaying gently with her steps. In the soft moonlight, everything looked just right.
She smiled and called his name, "Lu Jin".
Lu Jin's eyelashes fluttered slightly as he asked calmly, "Why are you here?"
"Because I sensed my Snow White was in danger!" With only a short distance left, Xia Zhen exaggeratedly ran a few steps to him. She opened her arms, as if embracing the moonlight, or perhaps him, and grinned, "So I've come to save my princess!"
Lu Jin looked up at her and blinked gently.
He didn't react much, but the cat in his arms was suddenly provoked by Xia Zhen and jumped up, landing on the ground with its teeth bared. Only after realizing that the girl who came was the one who often fed it delicious food did it soften up and lie down on the ground.
Xia Zhen wasn't embarrassed at all. She bent down, cupped his face, and asked seriously, "My Snow White, did you encounter a terrible hunter, or were you fed a poisoned apple by an old witch? Or were you bullied by a cruel stepmother and stepsister, making you pick beans from the ashes?"
Perhaps the moonlight was too hazy, creating an illusion, but there seemed to be a hint of a smile in his eyes. "The one picking beans is Cinderella."
Xia Zhen thought about it and realized that she had indeed made a mistake, but it wasn't a big problem. Anyway, she wasn't embarrassed. She moved the hand that was holding his face and asked, "Why were you bullied?"
He said, "Poisoned apple."
Xia Zhen was stunned for a moment. "Are you sure... it's a poisoned apple?"
He raised a hand and placed it on the back of her hand, saying slowly, "I'm sure."
Xia Zhen's heart suddenly started pounding, a feeling of excitement almost made her scalp tingle, and she was in a state of high excitement.
She lowered her head under the boy's gaze, which had softened without her noticing.
She was warm, he was cold, but the temperature difference was just right.
He finally lost control and reached out to pull the girl into his arms.
That's how it's written in the story: Snow White, who ate the poisoned apple, woke up with a kiss from the prince.
"Meow?"
The little white cat meowed in confusion. It didn't understand why someone else had taken the boy's lap, which was clearly a good place for it to lie down and sleep.
