Chapter 48 Waiting until you get used to it
On this windy night, the boy and girl talked a lot.
When he was in kindergarten, his favorite book was a picture book, which was a gift from his kindergarten teacher and the only book he could own. But not long after, Lu Ci snatched the picture book away.
When he was in elementary school, before he moved, his favorite place was downstairs in the community. There was a sandpit there, and next to the sandpit was a swing. Every day after school, he would try to stay there as long as possible.
There are many noisy children there, and each child is accompanied by an elder. Even if they roll around in the sandpit and get their clothes dirty, they will not be scolded by their elders.
He looked at the children as if he were one of them.
But later, Lu Ci complained to her parents that Lu Jin was slacking off here because he definitely didn't want to go home and do housework.
He was then no longer allowed to go there.
During junior high school, Lu Jin had become accustomed to silence and hiding his true emotions. Apart from studying, he would no longer waste time on anything else.
Even so, the honors he earned through his own efforts were always demanded by his parents to be given to Lu Ci.
Hao Hui said gently to him, "Lu Jin, your grades are already very good. You don't need so many awards. You're so good at writing essays. Help your brother win more awards so that he has a chance to go to the same high school as you, okay?"
Go to a high school?
Lu Jin felt only irony.
He knew very well that even with his excellent grades, he might not be able to enter high school with his parents' gratified gaze after graduating from junior high school.
He has achieved everything he has now entirely through his own trepidation and overcoming numerous obstacles.
The boy's words about the past were just a few simple sentences, but the simpler they were, the more heartbreaking they were to hear.
Xia Zhen hugged him tightly, "Lu Jin, I won't be taken away by anyone. As long as you still need me, I will always be by your side."
He lowered his head, the girl's fragrance lingering around his nose.
Lu Jin closed his eyes, the heat in his chest almost making him sigh. His arms around the girl's body tightened as if imprisoning her. "Zhenzhen, don't say things like that to me."
He feared that he had too much now, and if the day came when fate no longer favored him, he would definitely not be able to adapt to the dark and lonely days he had lived before.
Xia Zhen was probably feeling rebellious. She looked up at him and said, "I'm going to tell you this: once you get used to hearing it, you won't be able to live without me."
Lu Jin was speechless.
He had to admit that she was indeed very adept at grasping his emotions and peering into his thoughts.
Around two or three in the morning, the school staff and Lu Huiming finally reached a general agreement on how to handle the aftermath, and the school staff gradually left.
Lu Huiming and Hao Hui stayed at the hospital to accompany Lu Ci, and Lu Jin also stayed.
Xia Zhen disagreed, and he quietly told her, "I have things to do, and I promise you I won't get hurt."
He gave her another key and whispered, "Don't wait for me to go to school tomorrow, Zhenzhen, take care of Xiaobai for me."
It would be truly unacceptable for the older brother to leave us now that his younger brother has suffered such a terrible accident.
Xia Zhen didn't care whether Lu Jin had a good reputation or not. She wanted to persuade Lu Jin to change his mind. Teacher Wen came over and said, "Xia Zhen, I'll take you home."
Xia Zhen had no choice but to keep quiet for the time being. Under the boy's watchful gaze, she walked away, turning back every few steps.
Teacher Wen patted Xia Zhen's head and said, "Don't worry, this is a hospital, Lu Jin will be fine."
Xia Zhen hummed in agreement.
Ms. Wen, being a woman herself, could keenly sense that the relationship between Lu Jin and Xia Zhen was somewhat unusual. However, this was not a good place to talk about it, so she could only keep it to herself for the time being and discuss it later.
No one from the Lu family returned all night.
Upon hearing Xia Zhen recount Lu Ci's serious injuries, Aunt Fang sighed for a long time. She didn't know much about the Lu family, but she felt great sympathy for a young man who might become a vegetable and face paralysis even if he woke up.
The eldest son of the Lu family was already physically disabled, and now the younger son has also had an accident. It's really pitiful.
Aunt Fang surprisingly had no objection to Xia Zhen bringing the Lu family's cat back to take care of it.
Lu Jin did not come to school on Friday.
Xia Zhen was listless all day.
News of Lu Ci's accident had already spread throughout the school. A group of younger girls were initially incredulous, but were also heartbroken.
Such a handsome guy, how could something like this happen to him!
The senior high school students might exchange a few words, but the junior high school students, especially Lu Ci's cronies, were much more enthusiastic about it.
On the basketball court, a few people stopped playing and huddled together chatting.
"Lu Ci is really unlucky. She finally managed to get on the good side of Young Master Song, but then she was crippled."
"Is he really beyond help?"
"I heard he had brain surgery and he's still unconscious. How can he be in good condition?"
"You guys don't know yet, do you?" someone whispered, "It seems that Lu Ci is still eyeing that rich and beautiful girl in the senior year of high school."
Upon hearing this, none of them were surprised.
"That girl named Xia Zhen, even I would find it hard to resist her, let alone Lu Ci!"
"Yeah, it's a pity our school uniforms are so ugly, but she has such fair skin and is so pretty. I bet her tiny waist and long legs... tsk tsk!"
The boys exchanged knowing smiles.
Suddenly, a loud "bang" startled the group.
A basketball was thrown directly into the hoop and landed heavily on the ground, right in the middle of the group of people, startling them so much that they scattered and ran away.
Beyond the three-point line, there was a beautiful girl with long, wavy hair.
She dusted off her hands, took a lollipop from the short-haired girl next to her, and said with a dangerous smile, "Are all high school sophomores this lax these days? If you have so much time to gossip, why don't you practice with me?"
With a "crunch," she bit the lollipop in her mouth, making it crunchy.
The boys trembled, barely daring to breathe, but inwardly they were screaming: how had they offended this legendary queen!
At the time when school was letting out, a black minivan was parked at the school gate. Just by looking at it, one could tell it was very expensive, which attracted everyone's attention.
Xia Zhen slowly walked out of the school gate. When she saw the car, her eyebrows twitched, but she quickly composed herself and ran over with a mixture of surprise and delight. The driver, who was waiting on the side, opened the car door.
Xia Zhen called out joyfully to the incredibly wealthy man in the car, "Dad!"
