Chapter 50 Crippled
He said Lu Ci was useless.
This boy, who always never talked back when hit or cursed, and who was as submissive as a puppet, actually uttered such vicious and despicable words one day!
"Who are you calling trash!" Hao Hui was like a powder keg that had suddenly been lit. She stood up and screamed at the person in the wheelchair.
It's rare that after crying for so long, she still had the energy to yell at people.
Lu Jin's gaze was indifferent. "Am I wrong? He can't move freely, and he'll need someone to take care of him in the future. He's just a useless piece of trash who'll only be a burden to you just by existing."
Hao Hui's face turned pale. "You...you..."
Amidst the interplay of light and darkness, Lu Jin's ease and composure momentarily made one forget that he was a person with a physical disability. His gaze was dark as he spoke slowly, "If you want to hear more, I can help you recall more."
Lu Huiming was completely confused about the situation. He stared intently at Hao Hui and asked, "What did he mean by that?"
Hao Hui couldn't bring herself to say it.
That was the year Lu Ci was in the third grade of elementary school. Lu Jin brought home a test paper with two perfect scores, but Lu Ci only got a little over eighty points in math. He made a big fuss, unwilling to lose to Lu Jin.
That's how Hao Hui comforted Lu Ci back then.
“He can’t move freely and will need someone to take care of him in the future. He’s just a useless person who will only be a burden to you just by living. You don’t need to compare yourself to him, Xiao Ci. You are your parents’ precious child.”
Hao Hui never imagined that Lu Jin would hear what she said back then. She had to admit that she had said such things to Lu Ci more than once to protect Lu Ci's self-esteem, but now that it had been pointed out, she felt a deep sense of shame.
But after the shame, she felt even more terrified.
He was still a child, yet he remained unmoved after hearing what she said.
Hao Hui seemed to be meeting Lu Jin for the first time. She took a step back in a panic, and a look of fear appeared in her eyes.
She and Lu Jin are mother and son, but now, whether it's her panic or his indifference, their relationship is worse than that of strangers.
Lu Huiming felt that Hao Hui was becoming increasingly neurotic. He looked angrily at Lu Jin and said, "No matter what, Lu Ci is your brother. Now that he's in trouble, you're not sad at all, but instead you're making sarcastic remarks here. Lu Jin, are you even human?"
Over the years, when Lu Jin was openly or subtly mocked by Lu Ci, he had never seen his father stand up indignantly to speak out.
Lu Jin didn't feel sad or upset. He was used to this kind of differential treatment. He was just glad that his girl wasn't here, otherwise she would definitely be angry and start cursing.
Thinking of her angry face, a faint smile suddenly appeared in his eyes.
Lu Huiming was stunned. It was one thing for Hao Hui to be mentally unstable, but why was Lu Jin also mentally unstable?
How can you still laugh after being scolded?
“Your precious son will not be able to take care of you in your old age and see you off when you die. If you cut your losses now, it’s not too late.”
Lu Huiming said, "What do you mean by 'stop loss'? Does it mean that our kindness to our children as parents is a transaction?"
“Isn’t that right?” Lu Jin said quietly, “You feed him the best food, dress him the best clothes, and enroll him in countless tutoring classes, all so that one day he can make a name for himself and allow you to live a comfortable old age. You make him appear in front of others as a child of the Lu family, isn’t that also to give you face? You spend money on him, and he gives you the returns you want, isn’t that a transaction?”
Lu Huiming was speechless when asked the question.
He never knew that this taciturn child would one day utter such insightful words.
It seems that in his words, the so-called father-son affection is nothing more than a selfish act disguised as a kind of universal love.
Suddenly, a burst of laughter rang out.
Hao Hui still had tear stains on her face, making her smile even more eerie. Her laughter was full of sarcasm, and her gaze fell on the boy. She made no attempt to hide her meanness, "You're nothing but a cripple in a wheelchair. How dare you try to convince us to give up Xiao Ci and choose you instead?"
The word "disabled" is far too harsh and cruel; it completely exceeds what a normal mother would do to her child.
Lu Huiming usually beats and scolds Lu Jin whenever he is unhappy, but now when he hears these two words, he frowns and finds them very grating.
The sun has completely set, and the afterglow outside the window has disappeared.
The boy sat quietly in the dim light, his expression obscured, but a hint of amusement could be heard in his calm voice: "What if I said I could stand up?"
Upon hearing this, Hao Hui exclaimed, "This is impossible!"
But Lu Huiming clearly had a different idea from Hao Hui. He asked, both surprised and delighted, "Really?"
"To find out if it's true, you can come with me to the doctor for a checkup."
Hao Hui looked at Lu Huiming's subtly excited face, and her heart sank.
Yes.
Given a child who cannot stand up, and a child who can stand up, most people would prefer the latter.
But Hao Hui was unwilling to give up. She gripped the hem of her clothes tightly and stared intently at the boy. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that she harbored deep hatred for him.
The child she had placed so much hope in is lying in a hospital bed and has not yet woken up. Why should he have the chance to stand up?
This intense hostility had absolutely no effect on Lu Jin.
Lu Huiming assumed that Hao Hui couldn't accept that Lu Ci was in trouble. He pulled Hao Hui a few steps to the side and said in a low voice, "We're both getting old. It's not realistic to raise another one. In a few decades, when we're old, we'll need someone to take care of us too. Besides, we don't know what will happen to Xiao Ci in the future. He'll need someone to take care of him too."
Hao Hui questioned, "Are you just going to abandon your son like this?"
"What are you saying? Isn't Lu Jin our son too?" Lu Huiming sighed again. "Xiao Ci is already like this. We have to plan for the future. Think about Xiao Ci. When we're old and frail, are we going to let Xiao Ci starve to death in bed?"
Hao Hui's expression softened for a moment, then she covered her face and burst into tears again, "I believe... I believe Xiao Ci will be alright..."
A mother's love for her son is truly touching.
Lu Jin, however, had no interest in watching the show.
Ignoring what the people over there were talking about, he tore open the wrapper of a chocolate, put it in his mouth, and found that both the outer chocolate and the strawberry filling inside were sweet.
He lowered his eyes with a hint of sadness.
She said if you miss her, eat a piece of chocolate.
That statement is incorrect.
Because he was still thinking about her.
