Chapter 208 The King of Painted Eyebrows
She clutched his clothes, choking back tears as she accused him, "You're lying, everyone dies."
People who could be easily coaxed with a few words in the past are now starting to take things seriously.
Yes, how can people not die?
Lu Jin had to correct himself, "I misspoke. Everyone dies, but I promise I'll grow old with you, and then leave this world, okay?"
Xia Zhen shook her head. "No good."
Lu Jin really didn't know how to coax her. He wanted to kiss her, but she kept her head buried in his chest and refused to lift it up. Now his chest was soaked with sweat.
Unexpectedly, she slightly raised her face and said, "Lu Jin, when we get old, you have to walk behind me."
The girl's eyes were red, her dark pupils glistening with tears, and her eyelashes were damp with raindrops, as if they could condense into beads and fall at any moment.
Lu Jin's throat tightened, and he felt his heart tremble with her tears. He reached out and gently wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes. "Zhenzhen, don't cry."
She wouldn't let him go, tugging at his sleeve, and stubbornly asked, "Will you say yes or no?"
He sighed helplessly, "Fine, I promise you."
Xia Zhen pursed her lips, nuzzled against his chest, and said in a muffled voice, "I'm sorry, I'm actually very selfish, but on this point, I only want to think about myself and don't want to consider you."
When their hair turns gray and they need canes, her insistence that he must walk behind them is because she doesn't want to be the one left behind.
The time they spent together was so wonderful; when they lost each other, those uneventful years only seemed more lonely and painful.
So she didn't want to be the one left behind.
On this one point alone, Xia Zhen was unwilling to compromise.
Lu Jin lowered his eyes, only able to see the top of her head. He smiled gently and pulled her into his arms. "Zhenzhen, this is good. I won't let you be the one left behind."
Xia Zhen felt a pang of sadness again, and her eyes welled up with tears. "Lu Jin, please stop having those kinds of dreams!"
Dreams are not something that can be determined by personal consciousness alone.
But if he remains rational when his girlfriend is sad and upset, then he's just not a good enough boyfriend.
Lu Jin said gently, "Yes, I won't have those kinds of dreams anymore."
Xia Zhen's heart calmed down a little, and she nestled quietly in his arms, but her eyes still revealed panic.
She knew that the part Lu Jin dreamed about was the original plot from the book, but she didn't know why he would dream about these things, or if the dream was hinting at something.
She still remembered the vanished fairy saying that someone possessed some kind of comeback system, but because her relationship with Lu Jin was progressing smoothly, she gradually forgot about it.
The dream Lu Jin was having now instantly reminded her of that unknown person. Was it the system behind all this that caused Lu Jin to have this dream?
Lu Jin is never stupid. If he realized that he was just a minor character in a book who was destined to die young, would he break down?
She had put in so much effort to get him to accept the world and be full of hope for life. Everything was going in a good direction, and she was afraid that he would turn back into that pitiful little guy who would just cower in a corner.
As Xia Zhen pondered this, she sniffed again.
The boy lifted her face with his hand, and seeing that she was about to cry again, he quickly lowered his head to kiss the corner of her lips. "Zhenzhen, I'm right here. I won't disappear. Don't be afraid. I will always be by your side."
Even he, who knows her perfectly well, can't guess what Xia Zhen is thinking right now.
She gripped his clothes tightly, her voice still trembling with sobs, "Lu Jin, I will definitely take good care of you from now on."
He chuckled, "Fine, I'll be watching you closely."
Xia Zhen said fiercely, "Stay away from that Mu Zhijing, I hate him!"
Lu Jin lowered his eyes slightly. After a moment, he stroked the long hair behind her head, stared at her tear-streaked face, and said softly, "I hate him too."
Her expression changed drastically, instantly turning fierce and menacing. "Do you hate her because of Tang Susu?"
The girl who had just cried was now putting on a fierce look, which was not threatening at all, but rather made people laugh.
Lu Jin didn't dare to anger her, so he could only suppress his laughter. He explained, "I hate him because of his scheming, clown-like appearance. Or you could say he's like a monkey. No... monkeys are cuter than him."
Xia Zhen suddenly burst out laughing.
Lu Jin rarely speaks ill of others behind their backs, and this time he spoke so bluntly that it inexplicably tickled her funny bone.
Lu Jin laughed along, "Not angry anymore?"
She shook her head, showing no embarrassment whatsoever. Instead, she said matter-of-factly, "Who told you to say that in your dream, Mu Zhijing came to you for Tang Susu?"
Lu Jin and Mu Zhijing shouldn't have had any conflicts yet, so when Lu Jin said she disliked Mu Zhijing, she naturally thought of Tang Susu.
Lu Jin held her hand. "You don't blame me for saving Tang Susu back then?"
Xia Zhen said strangely, "You were saving people, not harming them, so why should I blame you?"
She's always like that; sometimes she's especially petty, but at other times she has surprisingly insightful opinions.
She viewed the people saved by Tang Susu and Lu Jin separately, not because she disliked Tang Susu and therefore blamed Lu Jin for saving her, but because she saw in Lu Jin's courage to save people when he was a child.
Xia Zhen's eyes lit up as she looked at him. "Lu Jin, you were so bold even when you were a kid. No wonder you dared to lay a finger on me when you grew up."
His actions towards her went far beyond simply "touching" her.
Lu Jin solemnly reached out and pulled up the girl's slipping nightgown. He kept his eyes straight ahead, truly like a reincarnation of Liu Xiahui. "One year when I came home from school, they had all gone out. I didn't have a key, so I sat at the door. She lent me a fairy tale book to read to pass the time."
Xia Zhen felt uncomfortable listening to this, and she said sarcastically, "A kind and lovely little girl extended a friendly hand to you, didn't you feel warm and touched, and even thought about marrying her when you grow up?"
“Zhenzhen…” he sighed, “What are you talking about?”
Xia Zhen muttered, "That's how it's always written in novels. The poor male protagonist has no resistance to the female protagonist who has helped him."
"So, a lot of people have helped me." Lu Jin thought for a moment. "My kindergarten teacher gave me picture books, relatives from that area saw how pitiful I was during the Lunar New Year and secretly gave me lucky money, and in high school, so many people got into fights because of me..."
He smiled slightly. "According to you, I'll have to think about marrying a lot of people?"
Xia Zhen looked at him in disbelief.
He remembered something else and patted her head. "Oh right, you helped me too."
She glared at him angrily, "Lu Jin!"
Even when she's angry, she's still so cute.
He lowered his head and kissed her cheek. "Zhenzhen, I'm not like those male protagonists in novels. I can simply repay those who have helped me. There's no need for me to offer myself in return."
I don't know what novels she's been reading lately. Does she fall for anyone who has helped her?
This is really hard to understand.
Xia Zhen looked suspicious. "So you only like me because I helped you and you found out I'm beautiful and kind-hearted?"
“You are different from them.”
She pressed further, "What's different?"
He said, "You don't have to do anything. Just standing there makes me want to follow your gaze."
Xia Zhen was slightly stunned, then couldn't help but cover her face and bury her head in his chest again.
He's so good at flirting, she can't resist!
Lu Jin gently patted her back and chuckled softly with pleasure.
His feelings for her never stemmed from any so-called "gratitude." It was simply that on that night, when she came under the moonlight, proud and refined, like the princess in the picture book "The King of Thrushbeard."
A proud princess mocked a prince for painting his eyebrows and lips. Later, her father married her off to a beggar, a fall from heaven to hell. After experiencing the hardships of life, the princess regretted her decision. Seeing her genuine remorse, the beggar revealed his true identity as a prince and married her.
When Lu Jin saw her, he thought that if she was that proud princess, then she should stay proud forever, and the prince who would take away her pride should not exist in the first place.
The moment he first caught her gaze in that moonlight, he had an unprecedented thought: if only he could hold her.
The person in her arms suddenly squirmed, and she complained, "Lu Jin, you're strangling me!"
Lu Jin hurriedly loosened his grip slightly, but only a little. He apologized aloud, but what he was really thinking was:
How could you possibly let go of someone you've finally managed to hold onto?
