"Uncle Erniu, it's past noon now, why haven't you left yet?"
Dazhu asked, looking rather clueless, "Where are all the aunties who came to town with us this morning? Why aren't any of them here?"
Wan Shu felt ashamed.
My eldest son is really incredibly simple-minded.
Uncle Erniu clearly sent everyone else back to the village before coming back specifically to pick them up!
"Your aunts have already gone back. I thought you'd be busy selling wild boar meat today and wouldn't be back so soon, so I sent them back first," Uncle Erniu replied with a smile.
Upon hearing this, Dazhu and Erya immediately felt embarrassed.
Wan Shu was also a little embarrassed, as an extra round trip would take two hours, which would be four hours in total.
Moreover, the more cattle run around, the more they need to eat.
It would be too unfair to only give three coins after all this trouble.
Wan Shu counted out ten copper coins to give to Uncle Erniu, but Uncle Erniu refused to accept them no matter what.
"We agreed on one coin per trip, how could I charge you so much more? Besides, thanks to you, my family had a rare treat of meat yesterday, so what's one extra trip!"
Uncle Erniu's youngest son also went into the dense forest to look for Wan Shu yesterday and got a piece of belly meat.
It only took fifteen minutes to enter the dense forest, and I got a piece of belly meat weighing more than a pound!
Uncle Erniu truly felt that his family had gotten a great deal from Wanshu.
If it weren't for the current poor harvest, and his daughter-in-law having just given birth, leaving the family in dire straits, he wouldn't even want to charge Wan Shu for the fare, let alone overcharge her.
He refused to accept it no matter what.
Wan Shu knew that Uncle Erniu was an honest man, so she didn't force him. She just took a piece of pastry from her basket and gave it to Uncle Erniu.
Uncle Erniu wanted to refuse, but Wan Shu shut him down with a single sentence.
"Uncle Erniu, if you won't even accept this, I'm not going to ride in your oxcart anymore."
Uncle Erniu scratched his head, and finally, blushing with embarrassment, accepted the pastries.
However, he didn't eat it himself; instead, he carefully put the pastries away.
The pastries are made with white flour and sugar, which are truly good things. They would be perfect to take back to my daughter-in-law to help her recover and produce milk!
The oxcart swayed and rocked along the way.
As they neared their house, Dazhu suddenly slapped his forehead: "Oh dear! How could I forget to buy roof tiles!"
Er Ya also looked annoyed: "We need tiles to repair the roof. It would be terrible if it rained again tonight."
Uncle Erniu scratched his head: "How about I take you to the county town again?"
Wan Shu: "..." It took another four hours to go back and forth. Can you guys even consider how the cow feels?
She looked up at the sky; it was clear and blue, not like it was going to rain.
She opened her mouth, intending to say she would buy it tomorrow, when suddenly three lively voices came from inside the courtyard.
"Auntie!"
"No need to buy tiles!"
"We've already fixed your roof!"
Wan Shu looked into the courtyard and saw that there were five more people inside.
They are Wan Jia's three sons: Wan Gangzi, Wan Shuanzi, and Wan Tiezi, as well as Wan's father and Wan Feng.
All five men were covered in dust and dirt, and Wan Feng was still holding a few pieces of leftover tiles in his hands.
San Shun, Si Ya, and Wu Ping heard the noise and ran out, looking disheveled.
Wu Ping explained with a smile, "When my third brother and I went to the fields to catch bloodworms, we ran into my uncle. He knew that our house was leaking and said that he happened to have some leftover tiles, so he brought my grandfather and my brother Shuanzi over to help us fix the roof!"
Wan Shu was filled with mixed feelings.
Repairing a roof is no easy task; it's troublesome and dangerous.
Moreover, Wan's father was old, and Wan Feng was lame. Even with several children following behind to help, it must have taken quite a bit of effort.
According to the original owner's memories, Wan Shu knew that the Wan family had treated the original owner very well.
But memories are memories, and reality is reality.
When she truly felt the kindness of the Wan family towards her, she couldn't help but be moved.
This was a warmth she had never felt in her previous life as an orphan.
It felt a little unfamiliar and strange, but she didn't resist it.
She stepped down from the carriage, her smile now showing more sincerity than before.
"Father, little brother, Gangzi, Shuanzi, Tiezi, thank you all for today. Otherwise, if it rained again tonight, we would have suffered."
As she spoke, she took a box of pastries out of her basket and placed it in front of the three boys.
"Here, thank you for your hard work. Take these home and eat them."
Gangzi, Shuanzi, and Tiezi smelled the sweet aroma of the pastries and their mouths were practically watering, but they didn't reach out to take them.
"Auntie, no!"
"Our mother told us that we shouldn't take food from other people's houses without permission!"
"Slurp... Auntie, you should save it for Wuping and the others!"
Wan Feng and Wan's father also said.
"It's just fixing a roof, no big deal, why do you need to eat such good pastries!"
"Life is finally a little better now, how can we be so wasteful? Look how thin your kids are, you should save this good stuff for them!"
Having said that, as if afraid that Wan Shufei would stuff the pastries into their hands, Wan's father grabbed his three sons and quickly left.
Wan Feng quickly grabbed the tile and limped after him.
Wan Shu watched the departing figure, smiled helplessly, and went inside to recount the day's harvest with her children.
She first took out the pastries, and generously gave a box to one of the children.
"Here, one box for each person, keep it yourselves."
