Li Lanzhen pressed the two children to her side.
She didn't look up, and the three of them huddled together in a hollow. Li Lanzhen listened intently to what was happening in front of her.
After listening for a while, all I could hear was the clanging sound of swords clashing.
She silently calculated in her mind the hissing sounds of swords piercing flesh.
There should be eight or nine dead or injured.
The moon rose, and the sounds of swords and spears gradually faded away.
Then came the sound of swords being sheathed, followed by a deep command, "Withdraw!"
Then, a series of hurried footsteps were heard, and in an instant, the silence of the wilderness returned.
After waiting a while longer, Gou Dan whispered in her ear, "Grandma Lanzhen, there's no sound ahead. Has everyone left?"
Li Lanzhen turned to look at Gou Dan. Could this child also have heightened senses?
"Dog Egg, did you hear the sound of swords and spears ahead just now?"
"Yes, Grandma Lanzhen, my grandma said that I have very good hearing since I was a child, and I can hear all kinds of sounds from a mile away. At that time, there were many trees and pheasants in the mountains of our Hanjia Village."
My grandma and I could catch pheasants almost every two or three days, entirely because I could hear the sounds of pheasants moving and thus accurately determine where they were lying.
Li Lanzhen smiled to herself, thinking, "I've found a precious dog egg."
He patted his head with a large hand, "No rush, let's lie here for a while."
After another short while, there was still no sound ahead. Under the bright moonlight, all that could be heard was the whistling wind and the chirping of insects.
Li Lanzhen estimated that the assassins probably wouldn't come back, and said to the two children, "You two lie here and don't move. Grandma will go upstairs to see what's going on. Come over when you hear meowing."
The two children answered softly, "Yes, Grandma. Grandma, you must be careful."
Li Lanzhen agreed and crouched down, slowly approaching the area where the fierce fighting had just taken place.
When she saw several carts and a pile of sacks and boxes on the official road, as well as people whose fates were unknown, she realized that they were either dead or alive.
Lying prone in the woods, Li Lanzhen listened for a while to make sure there were no more living people in that area before cautiously approaching, half-crouching.
When she stepped onto the official road, she was shocked by the bloody scene before her.
There were four vehicles on the official road: one horse-drawn carriage, one ox-drawn carriage, and two donkey-drawn carriages.
But now, the four vehicles are chopped into pieces, and the horses, oxen, and donkeys are lying on the ground, their fate unknown.
There were still more than a dozen people lying on the ground, all of them riddled with sword wounds. Some were decapitated, some were covered in wounds, and some had blood gushing from their chests.
Blood stained this area red.
Li Lanzhen looked at each person one by one to see if there were any alive.
Upon closer inspection, there were 13 people lying on the ground, all of them showing no signs of life.
Three of them were likely sons of wealthy families, dressed in silk robes, but now they were all lifeless.
The others were probably guards or butlers, and they also showed no signs of life.
What grudge could they possibly have? This is utterly ruthless!
Li Lanzhen checked the four carriages again. The carriages showed obvious signs of being ransacked, and there was almost nothing intact inside. Perhaps this group of people came to look for something!
Li Lanzhen saw several open boxes in the carriage, filled with books and jade artifacts. At the very bottom was a small box containing gold and silver leaves.
Li Lanzhen found it very strange. Did this group of people not even care about gold and silver?
Therefore, what they are looking for must be something more valuable than gold and silver.
What could it be? A treasure map? An imperial edict of succession? Or perhaps a tiger tally that can mobilize troops?
Oh, I'm getting ahead of myself. These things have nothing to do with me!
Li Lanzhen waved her hand and put them all into her spatial storage, then checked the three cars behind her as well.
The oxcart was open, without a canopy, and it was carrying things wrapped in burlap. Each burlap bundle had a hole poked in it with a sword. Li Lanzhen grabbed a handful of the things scattered on the ground and knew they were grain.
She cursed the group of people in her heart: "You bastards! In this era of natural disasters and man-made calamities, when food is more valuable than gold, how dare you waste food like this! You deserve to die a horrible death!"
Cursing under his breath, he put all the grain sacks that weren't stained with blood into his spatial storage.
The oxcart had been hacked to pieces and overturned. Did they suspect that what they were looking for was under the oxcart?
Li Lanzhen carefully examined the oxcart but found nothing.
Shaking her head, she continued to examine the last two carts, which were pulled by donkeys. They looked simple and unadorned on the outside, but there was something special inside.
I don't know how these people checked it; I guess they thought the horse-drawn carriages and oxcarts were the key.
Perhaps the person who delivered the message to them said that what they were looking for was in the first two cars, but that didn't work out.
Li Lanzhen first inspected the first donkey cart. The interior of the donkey cart was quite comfortable, with low cabinets around the seats and a tea table in the middle.
Although there were signs of disturbance here, it had not been slashed by swords.
Without hesitation, Li Lanzhen put everything she could use into her spatial storage.
Seeing a horse, a cow, and two donkeys lying on the ground, Li Lanzhen quickly put them into her spatial storage.
It's better if they live; if they die, just kill them and eat them. As for finding a reasonable explanation for them, once we return to the valley and enter the mountains, we'll have a thousand and one reasons.
At this point, Li Lanzhen suddenly had an idea.
Isn't this the perfect excuse to take the supplies out of the space?!
This is truly a godsend!
Thinking of this, Li Lanzhen quickly took stock of the supplies.
Then she remembered that when Hanjiacun came down the mountain, she had taken the horses she had robbed from Ankang City and stored them in her spatial storage.
Let's just bring it out now and say that Xue Laohu and Han Mingjiang went to the place where the horses were hidden and brought them back.
Li Lanzhen gave up on the matter of the horse because she couldn't think of a reasonable solution.
She took out the grain first, then the bedding and cotton.
Large quantities of coarse cloth and salt, followed by farm implements, including four curved plows.
There are also many seeds, including sweet potato, potato, corn cob, and vegetable seeds.
These things were piled up next to the oxcarts and donkey carts, like a small mountain.
She was pondering how to release the horses outside the space.
Then they heard faint footsteps ahead.
She immediately lay down and hid next to the oxcart.
The footsteps grew closer, and Li Lanzhen concluded that there were only two people.
Holding a stun gun in one hand and a large knife in the other, she held her breath and watched as four feet slowly approached the oxcart frame.
She watched silently, remaining quiet and lying prone as long as they didn't notice her.
If you discover it, strike first and kill someone with a stun gun.
At this moment, the two people began to speak in hushed tones.
"Father, more than a dozen people are dead here, not a single one is alive. How cruel!"
Another person said, "Keep your voice down. Let's see if we have any food or anything. Once we get the food, we'd better hurry up the mountain."
The man in front added, "My mother and two children must not go up the mountain at this time. If they encounter those assassins, it will be troublesome."
Li Lanzhen felt relieved when the first person spoke.
She knew that the two people were her son Han Mingjiang and her in-law Xue Laohu.
She quickly put away the stun gun and the large knife in her hand and stood up.
Why did you two come down the mountain?
