Chapter 49 Trespassing

Lin Cuiying looked at the footprints thoughtfully; they were clearly a man's.

"Officer, have you discovered something?" The old doctor couldn't help but ask when he saw Lin Cuiying staring at the footprints.

Lin Cuiying snapped out of her daze and pointed to the footprints on the ground. "There are footprints here. It seems the thief came in from here."

Upon hearing Lin Cuiying say that she had found clues about the thief, the old doctor's eyes lit up. "Then... can we catch the thief?"

Lin Cuiying rolled her eyes at him in her heart, "We've only just discovered a clue, where are we going to catch the thief for you?"

The old doctor awkwardly touched his nose; he had been too hasty.

Lin Cuiying pointed to the courtyard behind her, "This courtyard wall is so high, if a thief could climb over it, there must be something outside to step on. Take me out and take a look."

The old doctor didn't dare to delay and hurriedly led Lin Cuiying outside.

The two went outside, and Lin Cuiying looked around. The alley was narrow, with adjacent shop walls on both sides.

Then he stepped to the spot where he had seen the footprints earlier, examined it carefully, and then moved a stone in the corner with his hand. The stone was moved.

Lin Cuiying's eyes lit up. She moved the stone down and saw a small groove behind it.

You wouldn't notice it at all unless you looked closely.

Then, after examining the corner of the wall in detail, they found that some bricks were loose.

She pried the brick out with her hands and saw a hole behind it.

The hole isn't big, but you can step on it with your toes for leverage.

Looking at the brick hole and the stone in the corner, Lin Cuiying had already guessed what was going on.

The thief first stood inside the brick hole, then used his hands to support himself by pressing against the protruding stones on the wall. He then placed one foot inside the brick hole and the other foot on the stone at the corner of the wall, thus climbing over the high courtyard wall.

Thinking of this possibility, Lin Cuiying called out to the old doctor and then began to demonstrate.

She first stood in the brick hole, then gripped the top of the wall with both hands, one foot in front of the other, her front foot inside the brick hole and her back foot on the stone outside. Then, with a push of her waist, she stood on the top of the wall.

Then, she pushed herself up with both hands and easily jumped into the clinic, the movement was smooth and skillful.

The old doctor stared in astonishment at Lin Cuiying's actions.

This constable is not only skilled at investigating cases, but also incredibly adept at scaling walls and leaping across rooftops.

As Lin Cuiying climbed down from the wall and landed on the ground, a sharp shout suddenly rang out behind her.

"Who are you, daring to trespass on private property in broad daylight?"

The sharp shout startled Lin Cuiying. She quickly turned her head and saw a man in a dark blue robe standing behind her.

The man was in his early twenties, handsome, and had a scholarly air about him.

Lin Cuiying knew that her behavior was indeed somewhat abrupt, but who was this person?

How did it end up in the backyard of Anhetang?

Hearing the news coming from inside the courtyard, the old doctor outside the wall quickly explained loudly, "Is this the master? This is the constable from the county government."

After saying this, the old doctor hurriedly ran back to Anhetang from the alley.

The man stood in the backyard, looking Lin Cuiying up and down. "I just came back from the county office. How come I didn't hear that the county office sent anyone over?"

Lin Cuiying replied calmly, "I am a newly arrived constable from the county government, here to investigate the theft of He Shou Wu (Polygonum multiflorum)."

A hint of suspicion flashed in the man's eyes.

Lin Cuiying suddenly smiled slyly, took out a token, and deliberately made it gleam brightly in the sunlight.

"Would this young master like to inspect it himself?" The token clattered onto the stone table. The five seal characters "Songshi Town County Government" on the front were polished to a shine, while the back was clearly printed with an adorable lucky cat—an anti-counterfeiting mark produced by the system.

"Songshi Town?" The man stared at the token for a moment. "You're a constable from the next town!"

Good eyesight; you can read such small print clearly.

When Lin Cuiying saw the token, she asked the silly system why it wasn't a token from Shiqiao Town, but from the neighboring town.

System reply: Host, Shiqiao Town is just a small place, and there are only a few constables in the county government. You see them all the time.

If you use the constable's token from Shiqiao Town, aren't you just asking people to expose your identity?

Even if we want to borrow the tiger's power, we can't let the tiger's skin burst, can we?

The one from the next town is just right, and no one will doubt her identity then.

The old doctor rushed in and noticed that the atmosphere between the two was a bit off, leaving him somewhat confused.

He pointed at Lin Cuiying and said to the man, "Master, this is indeed a constable from the county government. He said he could help us find the lost he shou wu, so I brought her in..."

The man gave Lin Cuiying a deep look, still somewhat disbelieving, "Why did you just say that you were a new constable from the county government?"

Lin Cuiying put the token back into her bosom before slowly saying, "I was originally a new constable from Songshi Town. I came to Shiqiao Town to investigate a theft case in our town."

She paused for a moment, then continued, "I just arrived in your town today and heard that Anhetang had been robbed. I was wondering if it was related to the case in our town, so I came straight here."

Upon hearing this, the man nodded slightly, indicating that he believed him.

The old doctor wiped his sweat from his brow. His employer was good in every way, except that he was too suspicious.

He quickly introduced them: "Officer, this is the owner of our Anhe Hall, Young Master An Yunzhou."

"Young Master An!" Lin Cuiying cupped her hands in greeting to An Yunzhou. "My surname is Lin, and my given name is Dongtian."

I suddenly need to choose a name, so I can only borrow my younger brother's name.

An Yunzhou returned the gesture with a bow, "Officer Lin, I was presumptuous just now, please forgive me!"

Lin Cuiying waved her hand dismissively, "Young Master An, you're too kind. As a constable, investigating cases is simply my duty."

"Did Officer Lin discover any clues from his actions just now?"

Lin Cuiying recounted her discovery to An Yunzhou, then said, "The thief climbed the wall using this method; he must be someone very familiar with Anhetang."

An Yunzhou frowned slightly. "A familiar person? Who could it be?"

"Young Master An, may I ask if there are any other people at Anhetang besides you and the old doctor?"

An Yunzhou was taken aback, then shook his head. "No, there are only the old doctor and I in Anhetang."

Lin Cuiying frowned slightly. "That's strange. If it wasn't someone he knew who committed the crime, how could he be so familiar with Anhetang?"

"An acquaintance?" An Yunzhou muttered the two words, then suddenly looked at the old doctor, "Old Zhou, could it be you?"
