Chapter 12 Rabbit for Chicken

Without hesitation, Anji said, "Mommy, I'm hungry, I want to eat meat." He pouted as he spoke, which was quite adorable.

Seeing that he was open to negotiation, Yuan Doudou continued her persuasion, "How about Mommy makes you some delicious rabbit meat?"

"But rabbits are so cute, how can we eat them?" The injured and dead rabbit was so pitiful, Angie couldn't bear to eat it.

Yuan Doudou smiled slightly, "Anji, have you forgotten? Grandma just said that the rabbit had a litter of baby rabbits. They will grow into big rabbits soon, and then you will have many rabbits to play with. You will then be able to forget about this rabbit. You should know that we are human beings and we can eat rabbit meat."

Here, nothing is off-limits to food.

With teary eyes, Anji said, "Mommy, Anji wants to eat meat. Can we not eat rabbit meat? We can use it to exchange for other meats."

Yuan Doudou was slightly taken aback after hearing this.

The words spoken by a child not even three years old are unbelievable.

Yuan Doudou felt inferior. Anji was right; rabbit meat was more tender than regular meat. If they replaced it with chicken or duck, Anji wouldn't be upset.

Yuan Doudou decided to trade the rabbit for something else.

She grabbed the rabbit by its ears and led it out of the yard.

Yuan Doudou's place is located in a remote part of the village. You have to turn left after leaving the house and walk about a hundred steps before you can see other houses.

"Angie, this rabbit looks nice. Can you sell it to me?" The village head walked over, his eyes fixed on the big, fat rabbit in Yuan Doudou's hand.

After three years of natural disasters, there were no living creatures left on the mountain. The rabbit in Yuan Doudou's hand was obviously wild and tasted better than a domesticated one.

Yuan Doudou smiled and waved her hand, "Village head, I was planning to trade the rabbit for meat, I'm not selling."

The village head's eyelids drooped, and he couldn't save face. "Little girl, buying this from you is an honor for you. You should be the one offering it to me."

"You're dreaming. These days, who has meat to trade with you?" Even if a family raises some chickens, ducks, or geese, they're keeping them to sell at the end of the year; they wouldn't be willing to eat them themselves.

Yuan Doudou shrugged slightly, "Nobody wants it, I'll eat it myself, the village head doesn't need to worry about it."

Yuan Doudou had no intention of giving a kind look to a village head who loved to take advantage of others.

Thinking of her husband's sacrifice while away from home, the small amount of compensation the government gave her was supposed to be ten taels, but she only received eight taels. The village headman euphemistically called it paying taxes to the government.

The village head looked at Yuan Doudou's straight back and was so angry that his beard stood on end.

She had only walked a few steps when she heard crying coming from the courtyard of a house.

"I don't want to eat chicken, I want to eat rabbit meat, rabbit meat is delicious."

What a coincidence!

Yuan Doudou remembered that this was Li Dahai's house. He was the only carpenter in the village, and his skills were superb. Everyone in the village praised him.

Li Dahai's carpentry skills are inherited from his family, and his family has always been one of the wealthiest in the village.

The natural disaster did not have a major impact on their family.

Wang Dahai was always busy traveling around making money. In the blink of an eye, he turned thirty and became an old man that everyone disliked. Wang Dahai's mother was very anxious and arranged for him to marry a spoiled young lady who no one wanted. The young lady's father was a scholar who had never passed the imperial examination. He had spent all the family's money and had no money to go to the capital to take the exam. In desperation, he gave his only daughter to Wang Dahai for fifty taels of silver.

Li Dahai married Meng Jinxian, which was like marrying a tyrant. She always wanted to eat lavish meals and wear fine clothes, which drove Li Dahai crazy.

Early in the morning, Meng Jinxian wanted to eat rabbit meat. He ran to the market, lost a shoe in the process, and still couldn't find a rabbit.

Seeing that it was getting late, Li Dahai bought an old hen and brought it back. As soon as he got to the yard, before he could even put the hen down, Meng Jinxian pointed at his nose and started cursing him incessantly.

Yuan Doudou walked to the door, which was open. She looked at Li Dahai, who was squatting on the ground, and shook her head and sighed.

Is Li Dahai there?

Yuan Doudou suddenly spoke, and Meng Jinxian was startled, stopping her cursing.

"Who are you? What do you want with our Dahai?" Meng Jinxian immediately went on guard.

Yuan Doudou resisted rolling her eyes. "Big sister, your man is big and burly, not my type at all, okay?"

"I'm here to barter. Here's a rabbit. How about I trade you a chicken?" Yuan Doudou looked at Meng Jinxian, confident of victory.

Meng Jinxian stared intently at Yuan Doudou, who was wearing a blue cloth dress and a gray-black headscarf. She had an oval face, slender eyebrows, pink lips, and a prominent cupid's bow. Her outstanding temperament completely overshadowed Meng Jinxian.

She had no interest in competing with her; her gaze was fixed on the plump rabbit in Yuan Doudou's hand.

"My lord, what a plump rabbit! I want it." Her voice was like a gentle stream, captivating and touching.

Li Dahai knew perfectly well that a dead rabbit wasn't worth as much as a live chicken, yet he still wore a smile.

"Jinxian, look, this rabbit is already dead."

Before Li Dahai could finish speaking, Meng Jinxian covered her mouth with a handkerchief and began to sob uncontrollably.

"Li Dahai, you swore that you would treat me well for the rest of your life after you married me, but now, after only half a year, you have gone back on your word. Aren't you afraid of divine retribution?"

Yuan Doudou, with her sharp eyes, noticed that Meng Jinxian had no tears in her eyes; she was clearly acting out a tragic scene.

“Li Dahai, I brought this rabbit back from the mountain. It died from excessive blood loss, so you can eat it without worry.” Yuan Doudou didn’t want to stay here and watch the show any longer, so she tried to persuade Li Dahai.

The doubts on Li Dahai's face gradually dissipated. He took the rabbit, examined the wound, and confirmed that it was indeed as Yuan Doudou had said.

"What are you still looking at? Hurry up and give her that stinky chicken." Meng Jinxian stretched out her fist and gently punched Li Dahai's chest.

Li Dahai's face turned bright red. He picked up the hen from the ground and handed it to Yuan Doudou from a distance.
