Chapter 15 Fried Oyster Mushrooms

Seeing Wang's worried face, Yuan Doudou guessed that she was concerned about how to make ends meet.

She held Wang's hand, her clear eyes looking at Wang with gentle tenderness, and comforted her, "Mother, don't worry, I'm a mother now, I can support this family. As long as I have meat to eat, I won't let you have soup."

Yuan Doudou spoke with a firm tone, and Wang Shi could clearly feel her powerful aura.

"Dou Dou, actually, Mother, Mother, is worried about you." Wang Shi changed her words before she could finish, not daring to express her true concern.

Yuan Doudou smiled radiantly, her eyes shining. "Mother, I'm young and can endure hardship. Don't treat me like a delicate young lady."

"Okay, DouDou is the most capable." Wang Shi shook off her messy thoughts and smiled, revealing wrinkles at the corners of her eyes.

No one can predict the future, so living well in the present is the most important thing.

In the dead of night, Anji was snoring softly, while Yuan Doudou lay on her side, wide awake.

She mentally reviewed the bills; their family's daily expenses were considerable. Her mother-in-law needed medicine, Angie needed clothes and shoes made, and there were many other expenses, including firewood, rice, oil, and salt.

Yuan Doudou touched her face; her skin was rough and dry, as the original owner had never used skincare products.

That's true. If you can't even afford to eat, how can you care about your reputation? Besides, the original owner practically starved to death.

If the money in her hands is just left unused, it won't be of much use. Yuan Doudou racked her brains trying to figure out what business could make money quickly.

I picked a lot of mushrooms this morning. Drying them and selling them in town is a good idea.

The next day, when the sun was high in the sky, Yuan Doudou finally woke up. She had gone to bed too late the night before and slept very soundly afterwards.

Seeing that Andy was still asleep, she didn't disturb him. She quietly got dressed, pushed open the door, and went out. Wang was in the yard, tending to the vegetable garden.

"Mom, I'm sorry, I overslept." Yuan Doudou scratched her head awkwardly.

Wang did not blame her and continued catching the vegetable worms.

"Mother, what are you doing?" Yuan Doudou asked curiously as she approached Wang Shi after washing her face.

"The baby bok choy is just sprouting, which attracts insects. It's best to catch them in the morning." Mrs. Wang spoke slowly and gently.

In a daze, Yuan Doudou felt as if she had returned to that world and was talking to her mother.

"Then I'll go cook first, and we'll catch bugs together later." Yuan Doudou walked towards the kitchen with red eyes.

Behind her, Wang looked puzzled. Had Dou Dou been crying just now? Had she said something wrong?

She recalled the scene when she found Yuan Doudou on the mountain 22 years ago.

A crimson swaddle blanket, embroidered with python patterns, wrapped Yuan Doudou tightly. Around her neck was half a jade pendant, which appeared to be a dragon pattern. In the lining of her clothes was a handkerchief, made of silk, with three red characters written on it, as if written in blood: “Yuan Doudou”.

This is also the origin of her name. Wang did not listen to her husband's advice and insisted on using the name she had when she was an infant.

She guessed that it was left by DouDou's mother.

There is no mother in the world who doesn't love her child. There is only one possibility for her to abandon her child: for the child's safety.

Having guessed this, Wang calmly picked up Yuan Doudou and placed her in the basket she carried with her, trying her best to avoid the villagers along the way.

"Mom, dinner is ready. Wash your hands and eat."

The crisp, pleasant sounds from the kitchen interrupted Wang's thoughts. She slowly stood up and walked slowly towards the main room.

Angie got up, got dressed, and went to brush his teeth by himself.

When she returned home, she saw the cakes on the table and asked in surprise, "Mom, what are these?"

"Scallion pancake." Yuan Doudou tore off half of it and handed it to Anji.

Wang took a piece, took a small bite, and found it to be soft yet chewy and delicious. She was almost fifty years old and had never eaten it before.

"DouDou, with your skills, you could open a shop in town; you'd only make a profit," Wang said earnestly.

Yuan Doudou tried a bite herself and said it was alright. The noodles were a little worse than modern ones, but the texture was good and the scallion flavor was strong.

Anji ate half a piece and reached for more, saying, "Mommy, your pancakes are so delicious!" Anji gave a thumbs up and praised them highly.

Yuan Doudou received two positive reviews for breakfast, which was a good result.

After Yuan Doudou finished cleaning up the dishes and washing the dirty clothes she had changed out of the day before, she went into the kitchen again after hanging the clothes up to dry.

The mushrooms that were picked were mostly shiitake and oyster mushrooms. Yuan Doudou dried most of them and kept a small portion of the oyster mushrooms to make dishes.

"Deep-fried oyster mushrooms?" Wang asked Yuan Doudou immediately upon hearing the noise from the kitchen.

"Yes, Mom." There's not much oil at home. If we use it carefully, it'll last for more than a week. We used it all to fry oyster mushrooms, and the remaining oil is still edible.

Without further ado, Yuan Doudou first divided the oyster mushrooms into several small strips, put them in a basin, rinsed them with clean water, then put them in a bamboo sieve to drain the water, coated them with flour, and fried them in oil. It would be even better if she had egg liquid.

Unfortunately, there were no eggs. Few chickens were raised in the village, so eggs were in short supply and the price was naturally high.

"Mother, try it." Yuan Doudou picked up a piece of oyster mushroom and handed it to Wang Shi, hoping for her approval.

Wang took the oyster mushroom, blew on it, and then put it in her mouth.

After a long pause, Wang remained silent, which made Yuan Doudou extremely anxious.
