"I just ate half a bowl of porridge."

The old woman put down the silver token, and the jade bracelet twirled around her wrist.

"Dr. Zhang came to listen to my heart this morning and said it's still the same as before."

Her gaze swept over Lin Li, as if she were assessing her identity.

"Dr. Lin, let's go upstairs and take a look!"

Upon hearing Mr. Yu's words, the old woman's eyes suddenly widened. She hadn't expected that the woman who looked so young was actually the doctor he had brought back from Beijing.

Lin Li nodded and followed in his footsteps.

The second-floor corridor was covered with thick carpets, which absorbed all footsteps.

Mr. Yu stood at the door of the room at the very end, his finger hovering over the doorknob, not moving for a long time.

Lin Li heard suppressed coughing coming from inside, as if something was blocking her throat, each cough making her heart tighten.

"Go in."

Mr. Yu pushed open the door, and a strong smell of medicine hit him.

Lin Li blinked and saw an old man in gray pajamas sitting in a rattan chair by the window, his back to the door, holding a string of sandalwood prayer beads in his hand, his knuckles white from the force.

"dad."

Mr. Yu spoke very softly.

The old man slowly turned around, and Lin Li gasped.

His cheeks were sunken, his cheekbones like two protruding blue stones, and a layer of gray mist veiled the depths of his eye sockets. When he looked at her, his gaze was as if it had been soaked in water, light and unsteady.

The blanket covering her knees slipped down half a foot, revealing her thin calves with skin as loose as cloth hanging on her bones.

"This is..."

The old man's voice sounded like it had been sanded, each word rough and barbed.
