Chapter 56 Cleaning the Courtyard

After the man was taken away, Lin Li also went to the police station to give a statement.

I glanced at my watch; the time I was supposed to meet Professor Li was almost up.

I can't go to class today, I'll have to go tomorrow!

So she borrowed a landline, took out the note Professor Li had given her, and made a call to him.

When Professor Li heard that she had been robbed, he immediately asked if she needed him to come and vouch for her, but Lin Li declined.

After thinking about it, he called Lin Laosan's dormitory and asked him to come to the police station after class.

Before Lin Li could finish giving her statement, Lin Laosan rushed to the police station.

"Mom, are you alright?"

Lin Laosan rushed over, pulled Lin Li up, and looked her up and down, left and right.

"fine!"

Lin Li patted his shoulder and smiled, "Comrade, this is my son, Lin Laosan, he's a student at Tsinghua University now!"

The police officer who was taking a statement glanced at Lin Laosan, then at Lin Li.

He thought to himself, "Comrade Lin looks really young. If she hadn't introduced her, he would have thought she was Lin Laosan's older sister!"

"Comrade Lin, the criminal has confessed. His accomplices saw you were planning to buy a house and knew you were wealthy, so they followed you all the way, intending to rob you!"

The mother and son exchanged a glance; it seemed they weren't being discreet enough!

"His accomplices?"

"Yes! His accomplice works as a cleaner at the guesthouse where you're staying. I overheard her colleagues saying that you two, mother and son, are very wealthy!"

...

The mother and son both thought at the same time: It seems that putting the watch away was the right thing to do!

Not long after, two policemen brought in a woman dressed as a sanitation worker.

As she passed by Lin Li and her son, a hint of resentment flashed in her eyes!

...

"Comrade Lin, the statement has been recorded. All we need is for you to sign it!"

Watching her being led into the interrogation room, I took the statement book handed to me by the police, carefully reviewed it, and then signed my name!

The police officer took back the statement book, looked at Lin Li's name, and said politely, "Thank you for your trouble, Comrade Lin!"

"You're welcome, it's what we should do!"

After the formalities were completed, the mother and son left the police station.

"Mom, have you eaten?"

"Not yet," Lin Li said weakly.

"Let's go get something to eat!"

It was only noon, and the honeycomb briquette stove at the entrance of the alley had already been set up. The old man at the pancake stall scooped up a spoonful of golden mung bean batter with a tin can, and with a flick of his wrist, the bamboo dragonfly-like tool drew a round arc on the griddle.

The crispy, thin crust, wrapped around egg and scallions, was dyed amber by the sweet bean sauce and fermented bean curd. The sizzling sound as the sauce was brushed on awakened the taste buds of both of them.

"It smells so good!"

"It smells delicious, doesn't it! Buy two to try!" the old man said with a smile, his hands and feet moving non-stop.

"Then give me two!"

Lin Li handed over the money and received two pancakes in return.

With each bite, the first sound is the crisp crack of the skin, followed by the tenderness of the egg, the softness of the batter, and the savory aroma of the sauce and the spiciness of the scallions, all exploding on the tongue, making it irresistible to savor each bite.

Before we had even finished our pancakes, the aroma of roasted sweet potatoes wafted over from the other side.

The cracked potato skin oozes amber-colored syrup, and the vendor, wearing coarse cloth gloves, breaks it open to reveal the honey-like potato flesh.

The iron wok at the sausage stall next door started sizzling, and the diamond-shaped rice noodle sheets were fried until golden brown in lard. Minced garlic and chili oil dissolved in soy sauce, and diners used bamboo skewers to pick up the crispy edges and made a "crunch" sound when they bit into them.

The mother and son ate as they walked, and by the time they reached Ping'an Hutong, their bellies were already round!

"This is the courtyard house I just bought, take a look!"

Lin Li took out her key and opened the door.

As soon as Lin Laosan entered the courtyard, he looked around everywhere. Then, he returned to the courtyard with an excited expression, sat on a stone stool, and grinned.

"Mom, this house is nice, just like the house back home. A courtyard like this is so comfortable to live in!"

Lin Li nodded in agreement.

"I'm not going to B University's lecture today; I've already made an appointment with Professor Li to go tomorrow. When you go back later, please check out my room at the guesthouse for me. I'll clean the courtyard this afternoon, and you can go home to stay this weekend!"

"Okay!" Lin Laosan nodded to Lin Li, and after strolling around the yard for a while, he left satisfied!

After Lin Laosan left, Lin Li closed the courtyard gate, looked at the beautiful scenery in the garden, and smiled.

Now she owns a courtyard house in the capital!

She'll be setting prices here from now on, and once the real estate agent arrives, she'll have to ask him to keep an eye out for other courtyard houses for sale.

She wouldn't mind having too many of these incredibly cheap courtyard houses!

The courtyard house with its blue bricks and gray tiles gleamed gently in the sunlight. Lin Li swept the blue bricks with a broom, and the dust she kicked up still carried the smell of coal.

The rustling sound echoed incessantly in the small courtyard, and soon a small mountain of withered leaves and dust had been piled up there.

After cleaning up the garbage, they used a metal tube to draw a large bucket of water from the tap and used it to wash away the years of grime, turning it into a thin, brown stream that flowed down the drain.

As the sun began to set, the courtyard house was finally transformed!

After taking out various daily necessities and quilts from the space and filling the house to the brim, Lin Li quickly transplanted the plants from the space.
