When I got home, I waited for a long time but he didn't come. I called him, but he couldn't find me either. That's when I started to panic.
"Mom, where did you go?"
Looking at Lin Li's exhausted face and red eyes, Lin Laosan asked anxiously.
He hadn't seen his mother like this in a long time; she was always calm, composed, and elegant.
With her eyes slightly red, she told Lin Laosan everything about Lin Hu.
As Lin Laosan listened, his eyes widened, and he slammed his fist on the table.
'Thud!'
The wooden table broke, and the room fell silent!
Lin Li rolled her eyes as she looked at the table, now a pile of broken pieces.
"I'll pay for the new one myself!"
Lin Laosan was also stunned by his own actions. After listening to Lin Li's words, he nodded blankly.
Why would he punch the table?
“If Professor Chen’s daughter’s condition isn’t urgent, we can talk about it when I return to Beijing. Right now, I still have to take care of Hu Zi back in my hometown and deal with Hu Zi’s affairs.”
Lin Laosan came to his senses and walked up to Lin Li.
"Mom, Tiger can't stay in our hometown anymore, we..."
Before she could finish speaking, Lin Li interrupted.
“I will bring him here, but he must sever ties with his biological mother, and that family must be punished as they deserve.”
"Yes, that's necessary."
When Lin Laosan heard that Lin Li was willing to bring Lin Hu over, he breathed a long sigh of relief.
Mom is so kind and has such a good heart!
Lin Li, beautiful and kind-hearted: ...
If you think so, then so be it!
"I need to rest for a while. Take care of yourself in Beijing during this time."
After saying that, he went back to his bedroom.
After learning of Lin Li's whereabouts, Lin Laosan was relieved and went back to his bedroom to sleep.
I have to go to school early tomorrow morning to give Professor Chen a reply.
The next day, Lin Li emerged from the space, full of energy, and returned to the ward.
Seeing that Lin Hu was still asleep, I went up and checked his pulse. He was starting to recover slowly, and I felt relieved.
Take out the spiritual spring water and gently awaken it.
"Tiger, be good, drink this bowl of water before you go to sleep."
Lin Hu frowned, groggily opened his eyes, and called out to Lin Li, "Grandma!"
"Sweetie! It's Grandma. Come and drink this bowl of water first!"
After obediently finishing the spiritual spring water, Lin Hu closed his eyes and fell asleep again.
Oh dear, this child has suffered terribly.
If it weren't for the nourishing effect of the spiritual spring water, even if the child were saved, his body would be ruined.
It greatly affects lifespan!
Lin Li will absolutely not let that family get away with it.
Picking up the enamel basin under the bed, opening the door, and preparing to fetch some water to wash Lin Hu's body, she saw the village chief and the police hurriedly walking over.
“Aunt Lin…” The village chief broke the silence first, his voice hoarse as if it had been sanded.
He took off his Liberation cap, revealing sparse, graying hair, and beads of sweat still clinging to his forehead, clearly indicating that he had rushed all the way.
Officer Zhang, who was in the lead, stepped forward, his police boots making a steady sound as they stepped on the cement ground.
He opened the leather notebook in his hand, and between the pages were several yellowed letters, which were records of visits and testimonies.
"After an overnight investigation, we have basically ascertained the truth."
His voice was deep and serious, and every word struck everyone's heart like a heavy hammer.
"Tiger's maternal grandmother Zhou Guilan, biological mother Lin Xiue, and stepfather Wang Daqiang have been beating and abusing the child for a long time."
As Officer Zhang began his narration, Lin Li's body trembled with each name he uttered.
"Neighbors confirmed that such violence had been ongoing since Hu Zi was five years old. Some people witnessed Zhou Guilan beating the child with a fire poker, and Lin Xiu'e even whipping him with a belt..."
He paused, a flash of anger crossing his eyes.
“They even pressed the child’s hand against the coal stove to burn it.”
The hospital was deathly silent.
Lin Li felt dizzy, and the image of Hu Zi as a child appeared before her eyes. He was fair-skinned, tender, and soft back then.
But now the child is emaciated and covered in wounds, making it impossible for her to overlap the two images.
"The evidence is conclusive, and we have placed the three individuals under criminal detention."
Officer Zhang closed his notebook with a crisp "snap".
"This is the detention notice, please take a look."
He handed Lin Li a piece of paper stamped with a bright red official seal.
Lin Li mechanically took it, and the moment her fingers touched the paper, she recoiled as if burned.
The dense text on the paper danced before her eyes, yet she couldn't make it out clearly.
"What a tragedy... what a tragedy..."
Lin Li murmured to herself, tears streaming down her face uncontrollably, dripping onto the detention notice and spreading dark stains.
The village chief sighed and took a crumpled handkerchief out of his pocket and handed it to Lin Li.
“Aunt Lin, all the neighbors can attest to this. Tiger… he’s had such a hard life.”
As he spoke, his eyes reddened.
A commotion arose in the hospital corridor, where several medical staff members were discussing the matter while shedding tears.
"What a tragedy!"
"How can a mother be so heartless!"
"This is a beast, he should be shot!"
"Yes, he should be shot."
...
Officer Zhang also let out a long sigh, looking at the crowd that was beginning to gather around them, and said.
"Everyone, please disperse so as not to disturb the patient's rest. We will release the follow-up investigation results publicly."
The crowd gradually dispersed after hearing this, but angry discussions still echoed in the corridor.
