Chapter Ninety-One: He Was Misunderstood

In the afternoon, Wang Qianqian came to find Song Yueying. Seeing that the courtyard gate was broken, she thought something had happened and rushed into the courtyard.

"Dr. Song, Dr. Song, are you alright?" she called out as she ran. When she reached the door of the main room, she saw four people eating inside and Wang Qianqian froze.

The four people in the main room all looked at her at the same time.

The atmosphere instantly became awkward.

The brigade leader was sitting directly opposite the entrance to the main room, and seeing Wang Qianqian's awkward and helpless expression, he asked knowingly, "Is young Wang here to learn medicine from Doctor Song?"

Wang Qianqian didn't know how to answer, because Song Yueying hadn't explicitly said she wanted to take her as a disciple. Her face flushed, she stood hesitantly and awkwardly at the entrance to the main room.

The intention was to ease the awkwardness, but it only made the young educated youth more embarrassed, unable to even speak. The brigade leader was quite helpless.

“Yes, I asked her to come.” Song Yueying answered for Wang Qianqian, and waved to Wang Qianqian who was standing at the door of the main room, “It’s hot outside, come inside.”

Wang Qianqian obediently went into the house. Song's mother put down her bowl and chopsticks, got up and moved the long bench she was sitting on to Wang Qianqian.

"Auntie, I won't sit. Please sit down and eat," Wang Qianqian quickly declined.

"You sit down, Little Shadow and I will sit down." Seeing that she was covered in sweat, Song's mother handed her a bamboo fan. "Sit down and rest for a while, fan yourself!"

"It's so hot, I hope you don't get sick from the heat."

"Thank you, thank you, Auntie." Wang Qianqian thanked her repeatedly, feeling helpless and a little uneasy.

Qi Yanjue silently got up, picked up Song's mother's bowl and chopsticks and placed them on his own seat. Then, carrying his own bowl and chopsticks, he sat down next to Song Yueying.

Back at the square table, Song's mother saw her bowl and chopsticks placed in Qi Yanjue's place. Qi Yanjue sat next to her daughter, smiling with satisfaction.

A married couple should sit together.

Song Yueying glanced at him, said nothing, and moved aside. She looked at the team leader, "In the fields, I discovered that Qianqian has a talent for being a surgeon."

"So she was asked to suture Uncle Song's wound. Her hands were very steady while suturing, which shows she is indeed suitable to be a surgeon."

"She only gave birth a few days ago, she shouldn't need to work in the fields, right?"

“No need, no need.” The captain waved his hand repeatedly and said, “Since you think she has the talent to be a doctor, let her study medicine with you.”

He couldn't bring himself to do something as immoral as making a woman who is still in postpartum confinement work in the fields.

But he still had to remind her, "It's just that since she didn't work in the fields, the brigade can't give her many centimeters, otherwise the other people who work in the fields will cause trouble."

"No need to give her work points."

"I don't want work points."

Song Yueying and Wang Qianqian spoke at the same time.

The brigade leader raised an eyebrow, his gaze shifting between Song Yueying and Wang Qianqian, his eyes filled with admiration. He said the brigade didn't give out many work points, not that they didn't give out any.

Most people would happily agree to this and would never say they don't need to give work points.

Song Yueying is one thing, but Wang Qianqian actually offered not to take work points, which shows she didn't want to take advantage of the brigade.

"Have you thought it through? You really don't want the brigade to give you work points?" the brigade leader asked Wang Qianqian.

"I've made up my mind, I don't want work points," Wang Qianqian replied firmly.

Seeing that the young educated youth was so ideologically aware, the brigade leader reminded him again, "Why don't you go back and ask your Wang educated youth first, and then come back to me?"

“No need,” Wang Qianqian shook her head and said, “Wang Aimin said that he would support me in whatever I decide to do.”

"Alright, it's settled then." Since they'd already said that, what could he say? The captain lowered his head and continued eating chicken and drinking chicken soup.

Qi Yanjue placed a piece of chicken breast in Song Yueying's bowl, which she ate, finishing the soup in the bowl as well. She put down her chopsticks and said, "I'm full. Everyone, please continue eating."

The captain said in surprise, "You're already full? You barely ate anything. Could it be because..."

"Captain," Qi Yanjue interrupted the captain, "she has a small appetite and can't eat much, so we don't need to worry about her."

“Yes, yes, Xiao Yingzi has never been able to eat much since she was little, otherwise she wouldn’t have been so thin.” Song’s mother chimed in.

Seeing Qi Yanjue and Song's mother help her out of the predicament, Song Yueying tried hard to suppress the urge to hiccup. It wasn't that she ate little; she had clearly already eaten chicken wings and drunk a bowl of soup.

Song Yueying stood up and said to Wang Qianqian, "Come with me, let's get acquainted with the items in the first-aid kit."

"Okay." Wang Qianqian responded softly, got up and followed behind Song Yueying. Looking at Song Yueying's slender figure, she felt for the first time that she had been reckless.

She should have come later; if she had come later, Dr. Song might have been able to eat more.

Unaware of her thoughts, Song Yueying walked to the cabinet, picked up the first-aid kit, and opened it. She then took out the contents and arranged them one by one on the cabinet.

She introduced it once first, and then let Wang Qianqian memorize it herself.

The captain unexpectedly ate a bowl of pheasant soup and went to work happily.

After seeing the brigade leader off, Song Yueying gave some herbs to her mother to brew in the kitchen. She then went back inside to change into long sleeves and trousers, and came out carrying a cloth bag.

"Little Shadow, where are you going on such a hot day?" Song's mother knew from her expression that she was going out.

"I want to go to the mountains with Qi Yanjue to pick wild peaches," Song Yueying replied enthusiastically.

Song's mother frowned, glanced at Qi Yanjue who was walking over, and said to her daughter, "It's so hot, why are you going out to pick wild peaches? Don't make yourself sick from the heat."

“There are many trees in the mountains, and they are all shady places,” Qi Yanjue said.

“But there are many trees in the mountains, and many dangers!” Song’s mother was still worried. “Snakes, insects, and rodents can bite people, and I’ve also heard that wild boars often appear in the mountains.”

Upon hearing that wild boars had been spotted, Wang Qianqian came over to persuade Song Yueying, "Dr. Song, your aunt is right. I've also heard people say that the mountains are very dangerous."

Before Song Yueying could say anything, Qi Yanjue assured her, "Mom, I will protect her."

"If you encounter a few wild boars by yourself, you'll be in danger, how can you protect her?" Song's mother didn't want her daughter to go on a dangerous adventure in the mountains.

It has nothing to do with whether Qi Yanjue can protect her.

“Auntie is right,” Wang Qianqian agreed.

Song's mother said, "See? Qianqian said I was right. Little Shadow, it's so hot, you should just stay at home and not go out and cause trouble."

"If you want to eat wild peaches, Xiao Qi will go to the mountains to pick some for you, so you don't need to go."

Qi Yanjue cleared his throat and said, "Mom, the wild peaches are at the foot of the mountain, not in the mountains."

“Wild boars sometimes come down to the foot of the mountain to look for food.” As if afraid that Song Yueying wouldn’t believe her, Wang Qianqian added, “I heard it from Aunt Xu across the street.”

Qi Yanjue was amused by the two of them. He wanted to take his wife out for some alone time, but why was it so difficult?

"Mom, the mountains aren't as dangerous as you think, and I believe he can protect me," Song Yueying said with a smile. "Even if we really run into a wild boar..."

"We were lucky to kill the wild boar and bring it back to eat."

Song Yueying spoke the following sentence with great boldness.

After saying that, she looked at Wang Qianqian and said, "Qianqian, my yard gate is broken. Can you watch the house for my mom?"

Wang Qianqian looked confused, not understanding what he meant. Song's mother, however, understood. At the same time, she knew she couldn't persuade her daughter, so she grabbed Qi Yanjue and gave him a few more instructions.

Qi Yanjue readily agreed and gave his assurances before he was able to take his wife up the mountain.

As soon as she entered the mountains, Song Yueying felt mosquitoes biting her through her clothes. She thought that since she was wearing long sleeves and pants, the mosquitoes shouldn't be able to get in.

Qi Yanjue had been watching her closely, and noticing her unusual expression, he asked, "What's wrong?"

"I feel a mosquito biting me." As soon as she finished speaking, Song Yueying felt a sharp pain on her head. She slapped it and looked down at her palm. There was a long-proboscised mosquito flattened in her hand, with a little blood around it.

"What kind of mosquito is this that can bite through clothes?" Staring at the mosquito in her hand, Song Yueying was both surprised and annoyed.

“Mountain mosquitoes.” Qi Yanjue held her hand and gently wiped the mosquitoes off her palm with his fingers. “Mosquitoes that live in the mountains have longer mouths than mosquitoes at home.”

"So, my feeling just now was right, there really were mosquitoes biting me through my clothes." Song Yueying rolled up her sleeves to look at the mosquito bites on her arm.

With several small bulges, she became even more depressed.

Holding her slender arm, Qi Yanjue didn't even have time to feel the soft touch. Seeing the few small bumps on her fair arm, he suddenly didn't want to take her into the mountains anymore.

He hadn't expected her skin to be so delicate; even a mosquito bite would cause a small bump to appear.

I didn't want to see her covered in mosquito bites, so the best option was to go back.

"Moon Shadow." Qi Yanjue's voice was low and husky, his deep eyes fixed on the small bag on her arm, then he lowered his head...

The warm touch on her skin jolted Song Yueying back to her senses. Without thinking, she quickly pulled her arm back behind her back.

"What...what are you doing?" Song Yueying's voice trembled as she questioned him, unable to believe that he would do such a thing.

"I've heard that human saliva can disinfect, so I'll disinfect it for you," Qi Yanjue replied seriously, wanting only to get rid of the small bump on her arm as soon as possible.

"Who...who told you that human saliva can disinfect?" Song Yueying's eyes widened, and she really wanted to drag out the person who told her that and beat them up.

Isn't that misleading?

"Can't human saliva be used?" Qi Yanjue frowned.

"Of course not, the human mouth is full of bacteria, saliva can never disinfect." As soon as Song Yueying finished speaking, she felt another pain in her arm hidden behind her back.

When she took it out, she saw a mosquito crawling on her arm, sucking her blood.

Before she could move, Qi Yanjue swiftly slapped her arm, killing the mosquito. He then gently wiped away the dead mosquito with his fingertips.

His movements were incredibly skilled; Song Yueying's lips twitched, utterly speechless.

"Didn't you feel the mosquitoes biting you?" Song Yueying thought mosquitoes should attack indiscriminately and wouldn't pick and choose who to bite. He was standing right in front of her; there was no reason why the mosquitoes would only bite her and not him.

“I’m used to it,” he replied.

Those three simple words inexplicably touched Song Yueying's heartstrings. "Used to it? How could I possibly get used to it?" She felt terribly uncomfortable after just a few mosquito bites; how could she possibly get used to it?

Suppressing the flutter in her heart, Song Yueying took out a bottle of mosquito repellent from her bag and sprayed it all over her body, even her head.

Not content with spraying himself, he also sprayed Qi Yanjue with it.

"What is this?" Qi Yanjue asked, looking at the plastic bottle in her hand.

"Mosquito repellent," Song Yueying replied, putting the repellent back into the cloth bag. Remembering the wound on his calf, she asked, "Is your leg injury healed?"

Qi Yanjue paused, then realized what she was asking, and replied with a smile, "I'm all better now. The pills you gave me were very effective."

"Of course, I'm giving you food for life..." Realizing she had let something slip, Song Yueying quickly covered her mouth, her eyes darting around.

He had a guilty expression, as if he were trying to hide something obvious.

Qi Yanjue was deeply shocked. The pills she gave him could last a lifetime. In other words, he could heal quickly no matter what injury he suffered for the rest of his life.

His heart was pounding in his chest. At that moment, Qi Yanjue had only one thought: to hold her in his arms and cherish her.

Noticing the change in his gaze, Song Yueying unconsciously took a step back. She tripped over something, lost her balance, and fell backward…

The expected fall didn't happen; instead, she was pulled into a warm embrace. She looked up, about to thank them, but her breath was taken away, and the words she wanted to say were choked back down her throat.

Time seemed to drag on endlessly. Song Yueying felt her heart pounding faster and faster, her mind growing increasingly foggy…

She was only released when she was almost fainting.

"Breathe." A deep, husky voice sounded in her ear, and she shuddered. Like a fish surfacing, she gasped for fresh air.

Seeing the little face of the person in his arms, which had been flushed from holding her breath, gradually return to normal, Qi Yanjue secretly breathed a sigh of relief. He certainly didn't want to kiss his wife until she fainted.

Her heartbeat returned to normal, and her mind cleared. Song Yueying quickly pushed Qi Yanjue away, "We're outside, how...how could you do this?"

What if someone sees us?

Isn't it said that people of this era are very conservative? Would they blush even if they held hands? How come he's not conservative at all, he's even... he couldn't find the word.

"You can't do this outside, but you can at home, right?" Qi Yanjue's focus was clearly on a different level from hers.

How could she possibly answer him? Song Yueying simply ignored him and started walking forward. She had only taken two steps when a large hand grabbed her arm, and she could no longer move.

Fearing he might do something reckless again, Song Yueying looked at him warily.

“The road is difficult to walk on, I’ll go first.” With that, Qi Yanjue released her arm, walked in front of her, and pulled at the vines as he went.

Oh, she had misunderstood him. Song Yueying felt a little embarrassed and followed behind him with her head down without saying a word.

A short while later, Qi Yanjue stopped, turned around, and put something on her head.

"What did you put on my head?" Song Yueying reached up and took it off. It was a hat made of vines. He had been pulling vines as he walked, just to make a hat for her?
