At this moment, the ward door was pushed open, and Zhao Yiheng walked in and said, "He's awake. Someone has woken up."
Upon hearing this, Song Yueying quickly got up and walked towards him, asking as she went, "How is the person who woke up? Can they answer questions?"
“I examined him, and his mental state is fine; he can answer questions,” Zhao Yiheng nodded affirmatively.
"Then let's hurry up and go see that person." With that, Song Yueying took the lead and walked towards the door.
She needed to confirm when those people's memories were erased. She was afraid that if she went too late, the person who had finally woken up would faint again.
Zhao Yiheng stared at Song Yueying's retreating figure, lost in thought. Why did she seem so anxious?
Why the rush?
He hesitated for a moment, then a figure walked past him—it was Qi Yanjue. Zhao Yiheng reacted quickly, grabbing his arm and asking, "Where are you going?"
Qi Yanjue didn't answer, only giving Zhao Yiheng a look that suggested he was an idiot. He broke free from Zhao Yiheng's grasp and quickly chased after Song Yueying.
Seeing his reckless behavior, Zhao Yiheng was so angry he wanted to curse. He jogged past Qi Yanjue and blocked him at the door.
"Get out of the way," Qi Yanjue said in a deep voice.
"No way." Zhao Yiheng suppressed his anger and tried to reason with him, "Qi Yanjue, don't forget that you are still a seriously injured patient who can't move."
"I'm seriously injured, not dead," Qi Yanjue said nonchalantly.
“Have you ever seen a seriously injured person wandering around outside?” His nonchalant tone infuriated Zhao Yiheng. “If you go out like this, all our previous efforts will have been wasted.”
Zhao Yiheng knew he had spoken too harshly, but he had no choice.
He knew best how stubborn Qi Yanjue was; once he decided to do something, he wouldn't listen to anyone's advice.
"What's wrong with you two? Why are you arguing? And standing at the door arguing like that, aren't you afraid of being watched?" Song Yueying's clear voice rang out.
The two onlookers, Chen Guangyao and Zhou Feng, exchanged bewildered glances. Their sister-in-law's words left them no chance to argue.
Qi Yanjue and Zhao Yiheng both turned their heads to look at her.
"You..." Qi Yanjue wanted to ask her why she came back, but he stopped after saying only one word.
He was afraid the answer wouldn't be what he wanted to hear.
"If you two want to argue, do it later." Song Yueying didn't look at Qi Yanjue, but said to Zhao Yiheng, "I can't find where that person's ward is."
"Dr. Zhao, what are you dawdling about? Hurry up and let's go!"
"Coming," Zhao Yiheng replied, giving Qi Yanjue a deep look before stepping out of the ward.
Song Yueying then looked at Qi Yanjue and said, "If you're going to pretend to be a seriously injured patient, then don't come along to see him. Waiting for my news in the ward is the same."
"Don't worry, I'll be back soon. When I get back, I'll tell you everything that person said."
Hearing her tone as if she were coaxing him, Qi Yanjue felt sweeter than if he had eaten candy. He nodded and said, "Okay, go ahead! I'll wait for you to come back here."
Song Yueying smiled and nodded, not in a hurry to leave, but instead glanced at the ward.
Qi Yanjue immediately understood her meaning, turned around, and sat down by the bedside. Seeing how cooperative he was, Song Yueying personally closed the ward door and then went with Zhao Yiheng to see the person who had woken up.
"Sigh! Our sister-in-law is so direct." Her directness was embarrassing, and Zhou Feng didn't dare say the last sentence.
Chen Guangyao nodded in deep agreement.
Zhou Feng asked curiously, "Tell me, where did our captain meet his girlfriend? When did they file for dating? When did they file for marriage?"
"You're asking me?" Chen Guangyao glanced at Bai Zhoufeng with disdain and retorted, "Who am I supposed to ask?"
“You’re always by the captain’s side, I thought you knew! Turns out you didn’t know either.” Zhou Feng felt instantly relieved.
Because Chen Guangyao often stayed by the captain's side, he thought that the captain treated Chen Guangyao differently, and the others even envied him for it.
Now it seems they were overthinking it; the captain treated everyone the same.
"I don't know." Chen Guangyao rolled his eyes at Zhou Feng again, annoyed. "Are you happy now? Feeling better now? You stingy little thing."
"Hey! Who are you calling a stingy person? Explain yourself clearly, how am I stingy?" Zhou Feng looked at him with an expression that said, "I won't give up until you explain yourself clearly today."
“Let’s make things clear.” Chen Guangyao looked at Zhou Feng frankly. “I’m often by the captain’s side, so you might think that the captain treats me differently from you.”
"Don't try to deny it. I know what you're thinking, and your denial won't change anything."
Zhou Feng wasn't annoyed that his thoughts had been read, nor did he try to defend himself. He readily admitted, "That's right, that's exactly what we all thought."
"So I said you're stingy, do you agree?" Chen Guangyao asked.
“I admit it,” Zhou Feng said firmly. “That’s exactly what I thought before.”
"Before?" Seizing on the key words in Zhou Feng's words, Chen Guangyao asked, "And now? Do you still think that way?"
"I won't think that way anymore," Zhou Feng assured him guiltily. "I was overthinking things and got stuck in a rut. I won't think that way again."
Chen Guangyao nodded in satisfaction.
The deputy captain said that Zhou Feng is a responsible and courageous person with both good character and ability. He just sometimes gets stuck on things, but with proper guidance, he won't go astray.
Thinking of this, Chen Guangyao's lingering resentment vanished completely.
"Did you find out what the captain asked you to investigate yesterday?" Chen Guangyao's words were entirely out of concern for Zhou Feng, without a trace of probing.
"There's a glimmer of hope," Zhou Feng replied vaguely.
Having faced life and death, he knew all too well that the saying "walls have ears" was no exaggeration. Even though he and Chen Guangyao were talking here, who knew how many people were watching from the shadows?
Chen Guangyao stopped asking and looked at the people hurrying along the corridor. "Luo Ming hasn't come back yet, and I don't know how things are going on his end."
"Luo Ming hasn't returned yet?" Zhou Feng repeated the question, then his expression suddenly changed. "Oh no, Luo Ming hasn't returned. He might be in danger."
"I'll go in and talk to the captain."
The ward door was opened from the inside at that moment.
Qi Yanjue's deep voice rang out, "There's no need to come in again. I heard everything you said."
"Captain." Chen Guangyao and Zhou Feng stood up straight, their expressions serious.
Qi Yanjue quickly gave the order, "Chen Guangyao, come with me to meet Luo Ming. Zhou Feng, continue to guard outside the ward until your sister-in-law returns. No need to..."
He originally wanted to say that when Song Yueying returned, there was no need to tell her the truth, so as not to worry her.
After thinking for a moment, I changed my mind and said, "If your sister-in-law asks, just tell her where I am. If she doesn't ask, then forget it."
"Yes." Zhou Feng responded first, then suggested, "Captain, you were seriously injured yesterday and are still resting in the ward. Chen Guangyao and I will go find Luo Ming together."
Qi Yanjue rejected his suggestion, "We don't know Luo Ming's current situation. Your kung fu isn't good enough, so you should stay in the hospital."
The captain's words were truly hurtful. Even though it was the truth, Zhou Feng felt that his passionate heart had been wounded.
Chen Guangyao wanted to laugh but dared not, and tried his best to hold it in.
"It's settled then. Chen Guangyao, go to the back door of the hospital and wait for me." After giving the order, Qi Yanjue closed the ward door.
Zhou Feng lowered his head in frustration.
Chen Guangyao understood Zhou Feng's feelings and patted him on the shoulder, encouraging him, "Don't get stuck on this. The captain made this arrangement for your own good."
Hearing these words of comfort only made Zhou Feng more frustrated. He said angrily, "I know the captain arranged this for my own good, but I just can't understand it."
"We all train together, so why are you so much better at it?"
Chen Guangyao said, "It's probably because I'm more talented than you in this area!"
"Listen to this, is this even human language? It's like kicking someone where it hurts, it's too much, far too much!" Zhou Feng gritted his teeth and warned, "If you don't go to the back door to wait for the captain, he might beat you up."
Sure enough, Chen Guangyao was really afraid of being beaten by the captain, so he ran away as fast as he could.
Watching Chen Guang's departing figure, Zhou Feng felt envious. Sigh! He also longed to have good skills!
When Zhao Yiheng and Song Yueying returned, they saw Zhou Feng standing alone at the door of the ward. He was leaning against the wall, his shoulders slumped, looking like he had suffered a blow.
"Zhou Feng, why are you the only one here? Where is Chen Guangyao?" Zhao Yiheng asked.
"Dr. Zhao." Zhou Feng quickly stood up straight, looked at Zhao Yiheng, then at Song Yueying, "Sister-in-law."
That address of "sister-in-law" suddenly reminded Song Yueying of how they had called her that before. She almost wanted to explain to them that she wasn't their sister-in-law.
"What were you thinking about just now? You looked like you'd suffered a big blow. Who hit you?" Zhao Yiheng asked.
"Dr. Zhao, can you please stop being so sharp-eyed?!" Zhou Feng wailed. Everyone was attacking him, almost driving him to despair.
I feel utterly hopeless; I can't go on living like this.
Just as Zhao Yiheng was pleased with himself for guessing correctly, his face darkened, and he retorted, "If my eyes weren't sharp, how could I treat your illnesses and injuries?"
That makes so much sense; he was speechless. Zhou Feng didn't want to suffer any more, so he looked at Song Yueying, hesitant to speak.
"Do you have something to say to me?" Song Yueying asked.
"No." Zhou Feng shook his head decisively, but his gaze drifted towards the door of the ward.
His behavior didn't seem like he wasn't aware of anything; he was probably afraid of being overheard. Song Yueying understood Zhou Feng's meaning almost instantly, because it was so obvious.
So he asked, "Are there any patients scheduled to stay in the ward next door?"
Qi Yanjue wasn't in the ward; something must have happened, and he took Chen Guangyao to deal with it.
"No," Zhao Yiheng replied.
Song Yueying nodded and said to Zhou Feng, "Please come into the ward with me and see if there are any problems. If there are no problems, I will rest in the room."
"Yes, sister-in-law." Zhou Feng's attitude was very proper.
Zhao Yiheng realized that Qi Yanjue was not in the ward. Before leaving, he left a message for Song Yueying, asking Zhou Feng to pass it on to her.
He was also curious about what message Qi Yanjue had left for Song Yueying, so he followed the two into the ward.
"Tell me, what happened?" Song Yueying asked directly as soon as she entered the ward. She was always decisive and efficient, and never liked to drag things out.
Zhou Feng was still a little hesitant. His captain's orders to him were to tell the truth if his sister-in-law asked, and to let it go if she didn't.
Although his sister-in-law asked about it now, it was deliberately prompted by him.
Qi Yanjue said, "You call her sister-in-law, so you should know she's not an outsider. Just tell her what message Yanjue left for her, don't drag it out."
Zhou Feng checked the ward to make sure there were only the three of them there. Then he listened carefully but didn't hear anything suspicious.
Song Yueying watched Zhou Feng examine her with curiosity, and a sudden unease ran through her, especially when he strained his ears to listen.
Knowing Zhou Feng's capabilities, Zhao Yiheng casually found a hospital bed to sit on and wait.
Once he was sure it was safe to talk in the ward, Zhou Feng spoke seriously: "Luo Ming went out yesterday afternoon and hasn't come back yet. We suspect something might have happened to him."
"The captain took Chen Guangyao out to meet him."
The three of them knew perfectly well what Luo Ming was going out to do.
He went out yesterday afternoon and hasn't come back yet. Either he found an important clue and wants to dig deeper, or he was discovered and silenced.
"How does Luo Ming's skill compare to Qi Yanjue's?" Song Yueying asked. She had given Luo Ming white pills; as long as he wasn't dead, there was still hope for him.
Upon hearing her words, Zhao Yiheng and Zhou Feng both wore expressions that were hard to describe. Luo Ming's disguise skills were top-notch, but his fighting skills... were truly indescribable.
Zhao Yiheng clearly did not want to answer this question.
Zhou Feng had no choice but to bite the bullet and say, "Luo Ming's skills are no match for the captain's, but they're about the same as mine."
"Has he just exposed his own weakness?" Song Yueying raised an eyebrow at Zhou Feng.
Just then, Chen Guangyao's voice came from outside the ward, "Sister-in-law, are you in there? The captain just woke up and didn't see you, so he asked me to come find you."
The three people in the ward heard Chen Guangyao's urgent and rapid voice and guessed that something must have happened.
Zhao Yiheng, being a military doctor, reacted the fastest. He quickly went to open the door and asked, "What happened?"
"You're here just in time, come with me quickly." Upon seeing Zhao Yiheng, Chen Guangyao's eyes lit up, and without saying a word, he grabbed his arm and dragged him to the next ward.
Song Yueying and Zhou Feng followed closely behind and entered the next ward, where they saw Luo Ming lying on the hospital bed.
He was covered in blood, and if it weren't for his slightly heaving chest, one would have thought he was dead.
Zhao Yiheng was cleaning the bloodstains and wounds on his body, with Chen Guangyao assisting, but his movements were slow and clumsy, unlike his usual decisive and efficient manner.
Zhou Feng hurriedly went over to take over from Chen Guangyao, but Chen Guangyao refused. Zhou Feng cursed in a low voice, "You didn't even say anything when you were injured, and you're still here helping out. You're just trying to make things worse!"
"I'm fine," Chen Guangyao defended himself, met Zhou Feng's angry eyes, thanked him, and stepped aside.
Seeing the blood-stained clothes carelessly tossed on the ground, Song Yueying felt a lump in her throat. She had always known that soldiers had a tough time during this period, but she hadn't realized it was this tough.
Their weaponry was outdated, leaving them with no international influence. When the warlords and their followers withdrew, they left behind a mountain of spies—too many to catch.
Soldiers are frequently injured, or even killed.
