Chapter Thirty-Eight: Stupid and Poisonous

When Song Yueying laid out her thoughts, Song Rumeng's expression froze.

Has Song Yueying taken the wrong medicine today, or has she gotten herself into a horrible situation? How dare she contradict her? She shouldn't blame Song Yueying for taking her things and ruining her reputation.

Having made up her mind, Song Rumeng only took a few seconds to gather her emotions, "Yueying, I'm your cousin! How could you say that to me?"

"I only offered to help you because I saw you were carrying things and it was inconvenient for you to reach the rice, flour, and oil on the ground. I was just trying to be kind, how could you..."

How could you misunderstand me like that?

After saying her last sentence, Song Rumeng's eyes welled up with tears again, looking like she was about to cry, as if Song Yueying were an ungrateful wretch.

"Did I really misunderstand you?" Song Yueying asked, frowning.

Song Rumeng questioned, "Don't you know whether you've misunderstood me or not? Song Yueying, I'm your cousin, and you're my younger cousin."

"I'm the best person to you in the whole family, and we have the best relationship. Have you forgotten all of that?"

"Big cousin, you called me by my full name, are you angry?" Song Yueying said, feigning panic. "You just said that we are the best of friends."

"Since we're the best of friends, why are you suddenly angry with me?"

"You misunderstood me, of course I'm angry." Song Rumeng glanced at Song Yueying, as proud as a peacock.

She had thought Song Yueying had changed, but now it seemed she had been overthinking it. Calling Song Yueying by her full name was just a way of testing whether she had really changed.

She was very satisfied with the result.

Song Yueying is still that stupid, foolish girl. I only need to use a little trickery to have her completely under my control.

"Cousin, do you want me to forgive you?" Thinking she had Song Yueying under her control, Song Rumeng lowered her guard.

Song Yueying nodded and followed her words: "Yes, of course I want to, eldest cousin. You just said that we are the best of friends."

"Since we're the closest of friends, there's no need to ruin our relationship over some material things."

“My cousin is right, that’s what I meant too,” Song Rumeng agreed, already planning how to get the things Song Yueying was carrying, along with the rice, flour, and oil on the ground, back to her own home.

Thus, he failed to see the fleeting cold glint in Song Yueying's eyes.

Song Yueying remained silent, simply looking at Song Rumeng.

Her eyes were full of smugness, her mind full of scheming; she was both stupid and vicious. If it weren't for wanting to seek justice for the original owner of this body, she wouldn't want to say another word to Song Rumeng; she would only want to take action.

Song Yueying remained silent. Song Rumeng glanced at the things Song Yueying was carrying, then at the rice, flour, and oil on the ground.

She wants them both, what should she do?

After thinking for a moment, Song Rumeng asked, "Cousin, what are you carrying? I wanted to help you carry it, but you didn't want to, which caused a misunderstanding between us sisters."

"It's nothing, just some food," Song Yueying replied.

"Food!" Song Rumeng's eyes lit up. She had just smelled a faint meaty aroma and thought she was hallucinating because she hadn't eaten meat in a long time.

After hearing what Song Yueying said, she was certain that she wasn't hallucinating.

What Song Yueying was carrying was definitely meat, cooked meat at that. "Cousin, I'm actually hungry. If you share some food with me, I won't be angry with you anymore."

"Cousin, you just said you wouldn't take my things?" Song Yueying widened her eyes in feigned surprise.

Actually, she had something else in her heart, but she felt that if she said it, Song Rumeng would be so angry that she would jump up.

If I make you angry, I can apologize, but I won't change.

"When did I ever try to take your things?" Song Rumeng retorted, frowning, feeling that all the things she had said to Song Yueying before were for nothing.

The topic has returned to its starting point.

"You're asking me to share some food with you? Isn't that just taking my things?" Song Yueying retorted with a smile.

“I didn’t.” Song Rumeng’s face changed drastically, and her hand pointing at Song Yueying trembled. “You, you just...you’re talking nonsense, you’re spreading rumors, you’re slandering me.”

How dare Song Yueying bring these things up? She couldn't understand it; she had just managed to fool Song Yueying.

Could it be that Song Yueying wasn't fooled, but was just playing along and making fun of her?

How dare Song Yueying?

Glancing at Song Rumeng's finger pointing at her, Song Yueying sneered, "This donkey does nothing all day but kick your head, doesn't it?"

“Song Rumeng, put your hand on your pitifully small conscience and tell me. Putting aside the past, just look at the past year or so since I returned to the village. How much have you taken from me, openly and secretly?”

Do I need to slander you?

Song Rumeng hadn't expected Song Yueying to be so direct, and she cursed her countless times in her heart. At the same time, she was puzzled; Song Yueying seemed like a completely different person today.

However, no matter what Song Yueying becomes, she will still have her under her control. If Song Yueying obeys, she might let her off easier; if she disobeys…

Then don't blame her for being ruthless; it's Song Yueying's own fault for disobeying.

Song Rumeng suppressed the hatred that was about to overflow in her eyes and asked with feigned ignorance, "Cousin, did you lose something?"

Something's gone? Song Yueying frowned. Song Rumeng must be up to something again.

"We're talking about you stealing my things." No matter what tricks Song Ruxiang tries, as long as he doesn't play along, she can't keep up.

Song Yueying was determined to get justice from the original owner today, and she was determined to skin Song Rumeng alive no matter what.

Clearly, Song Yueying underestimated Song Rumeng's shamelessness. She was determined to deny it to the death, saying, "I didn't take anything from you. You're slandering me."

She said it was robbery, but Song Rumeng insisted on saying it was taking. Robbery and taking are two different things, and Song Yueying guessed Song Rumeng's intention almost instantly.

She wanted to deny it to the death, but Song Yueying realized she had underestimated Song Rumeng's shamelessness.

He immediately stopped indulging her and said directly, "Don't you have any idea what you've done? Do I need to go through all the things you've done, one by one?"

Faced with Song Yueying's straightforwardness, Song Rumeng felt a little flustered. But she still denied it outright, "I didn't do anything, I don't know what you're talking about."

"Cousin, what happened to you? I don't even recognize you anymore."

After saying that, Song Rumeng cried, crying very sadly.

Not far away, several women returning home from work walked towards this direction, including Aunt Xu. She saw Song Rumeng and Song Yueying standing at the door, with Song Rumeng wiping away tears.

Her expression changed, and she immediately walked towards the two of them. As she walked, Aunt Xu asked, "Mengmeng, what's wrong? Why are you crying for no reason?"

Song Rumeng looked at Song Yueying, hesitated several times before finally lowering her head and wiping away her tears alone.

A knowing smile appeared on Song Yueying's face. She had just been wondering why Song Rumeng had suddenly started crying; it turned out that the spectators had arrived.

The other aunties paid less attention to Song Rumeng, and instead noticed the rice, flour, and oil placed at Song Yueying's feet.

My eyes were glued to the screen, and I had only one question in my mind: How much money and ration coupons would it cost to buy so much rice, flour, and oil?

Song Yueying used to buy grain from the commune often, but she had never bought so much grain at once.

What a waste! Buying so much stuff, all the money will surely be gone, and we won't be able to make ends meet in the future.

"Aunt Xu..." Seeing that only Aunt Xu cared about her, Song Rumeng simply threw herself into her arms. She buried her face in Aunt Xu's shoulder and cried, as if she had suffered a great injustice.

Completely unprepared for Song Rumeng's action, Aunt Xu froze.

It took her a while to recover, and Aunt Xu smiled, overjoyed. The fact that Mengmeng was willing to cry in her arms showed that she was close to her.

Aunt Xu patted Song Rumeng's back and comforted her softly, "Mengmeng, don't cry. Tell me what's wronged you."

Aunt Xu's words only made Song Rumeng cry even harder.

Seeing Aunt Xu's face beaming with smiles, and her soft, gentle voice as she spoke to Song Rumeng, Song Yueying knew that this was not the time to confront Song Rumeng.

People tend to sympathize with the weak, and the image of Song Rumeng as a weak person is deeply ingrained in the minds of the villagers.

If she were to say anything negative about Song Rumeng now, these old women would definitely think she was bullying her.

Song Yueying wasn't in a hurry. She placed the net bag she had been carrying all the way next to the rice, flour, and oil. She then stood in front of the rice, flour, and oil, not giving anyone a chance to take advantage.

The crying instantly drew the aunties' attention away from the grain. Everyone noticed something was wrong, and one of the aunties asked, "Oh dear! What's wrong? What happened?"

"Mengmeng is crying so sadly, could it be that the two sisters had a fight?"

"They must have had a fight, otherwise Mengmeng wouldn't be crying so sadly."

Aunt Xu didn't like hearing this and retorted, "Impossible. Mengmeng is a kind-hearted girl. She is gentle and kind and never quarrels with anyone."

"It must have been Song Yueying who bullied Mengmeng and made her cry."

"She often bullies the people in our village."

An aunt carrying a basket on her back approached Aunt Xu and whispered, "Sister, she's Song Yueying! Song Yueying, no one in our village dares to mess with her."

"How dare you say that about her? Aren't you afraid she won't treat your family members if they get sick?"

Aunt Xu snorted disdainfully and said, "Who cares if she treats you? Any doctor in the commune clinic is better than her."

"But doctors at the commune clinic charge for their services, and the medicine is ridiculously expensive."

"That's right. Although Dr. Song is known for her swearing, she doesn't charge for her medical treatments, and her medicine is very cheap."

"Yes, yes, you can't offend a doctor, because you never know when you might get sick and need her treatment."

"Stop cursing me." Aunt Xu glared at the aunt carrying the basket on her back. "Go away, can't you wish me well for once? I'm healthy and won't get sick."

The auntie initially wanted to say something like, "Don't speak too definitively," but then she thought better of it. Since the other person wasn't taking her advice, why should she go out of her way to get criticized?

Seeing how much Aunt Xu was protecting her, Song Rumeng was secretly delighted. She gently stepped out of Aunt Xu's embrace, giving her a shy yet grateful look.

Wiping away her tears, Song Rumeng pretended to be strong and said, "Aunties, please don't say anything bad about my cousin anymore. She's still too young and doesn't understand some things."

“If you really want to talk about it, then talk about me. I’m willing to stand up for my cousin.”

Song Rumeng's words in defense of Song Yueying instantly won the favor and praise of several aunties.

"Mengmeng is so sensible."

"It's because Mengmeng is too sensible that she's always being bullied."

“Mengmeng, don’t be too sensible or too kind. The more sensible and kind you are, the more some people will take advantage of you.”

This statement couldn't be more obvious; those "some people" were referring to Song Yueying.

"Mengmeng, why are you so silly?" Aunt Xu held Song Rumeng's hand and said earnestly, "Auntie knows you are a good girl and you just want to protect your cousin."

"But you also need to see the facts clearly: some people don't deserve your protection."

"No, that's not how it is." Song Rumeng shook her head desperately, tears streaming down her face.

Seeing Song Rumeng crying like this, the other aunties felt some sympathy for her and advised her not to do anything that was thankless and difficult.

Not everyone knows how to repay kindness.

Having a cousin like Song Yueying is truly a curse rather than a blessing.

"Song Rumeng, do you still remember the IOU you wrote to me?" Song Yueying suddenly asked, annoyed by the noise from these people.

"IOU? What IOU?" The aunties' gazes towards Song Rumeng instantly changed. Their eyes were sharp, all wanting to see how she would answer Song Yueying's question.

Song Rumeng felt as if she had been struck by lightning, her whole body stiffening.

"What IOU? I don't know what you're talking about!" Song Rumeng decided to deny it to the end, since Song Yueying had already torn up the IOU with her own eyes.

But for some reason, Song Rumeng still felt uneasy, and a bad premonition rose from the bottom of her heart.

Could it be that Song Yueying had a trick up her sleeve?

No, impossible. Song Yueying doesn't have that kind of brain.

Knowing that Song Rumeng would deny it, Song Yueying said sarcastically, "Song Rumeng, you're writing me an IOU while reminding me not to tear it up..."

"I listened to you so much, do you think I escaped this predicament without a written agreement?"

Every time Song Rumeng snatched something from the original owner, she used this tactic of feigning retreat to advance. When the original owner asked her to return something, Song Rumeng would first say that the original owner had given it to her.

When the original owner got angry and argued with her, she pretended to be weak and pitiful, bringing up that she was the eldest cousin and how good she was to the original owner.

Then the original owner will be criticized, called an ungrateful wretch.

The original owner was very angry at the time, but a few days later Song Rumeng came to apologize to the original owner. She tearfully explained that she had no choice but to do so, and that she was forced by her mother, Wang Muxiang.

Then he took out the IOU he had written and asked the original owner for forgiveness.

The idiot original owner forgave her and even treated Song Rumeng as a good cousin, treating her with all his heart.

"Impossible, I saw you with my own eyes..." Realizing what she was saying, Song Rumeng immediately stopped herself from speaking. She abruptly changed her words, saying, "Cousin, how could you wrong me?"

"I've been so good to you, and you...you..."

After arguing for a long time, Song Rumeng still couldn't come up with a clear answer. She pointed at Song Yueying with a bitter expression on her face.

"I've put up with you for a long time." With that, Song Yueying stepped forward and grabbed Song Rumeng's fingers.
