Chapter Fifty-Six: Song's Mother Curses

In the cabin.

Wang Aimin and Wang Qianqian, the two new parents, had happy smiles on their faces. One was lying diagonally inside the bed, while the other sat on the edge, looking at their newborn daughter.

After seeing Song Yueying and her two aunts off, Wang Qianqian was still in high spirits.

Looking at his energetic wife, Wang Aimin couldn't help but ask, "Wife, I heard that women who have just given birth are very tired and want to sleep."

Aren't you tired? Don't you want to sleep?

If he didn't know that his wife had just gone through a dangerous childbirth, he would have thought she had just been sent to the countryside as an educated youth.

Back then, his wife genuinely came to help develop the countryside. She was the first to get up every day, the most enthusiastic worker, and full of energy, as if she were brimming with vitality.

"I'm not tired! I don't want to sleep either, it's just... I'm hungry." Wang Qianqian blushed as she spoke, finding it unbelievable even to herself.

She doesn't feel tired at all right now, and doesn't want to sleep, she's just hungry.

Looking at the baby placed beside her, Wang Qianqian's heart melted. This was her daughter! The little girl she had risked her life to bring into this world.

She's so tiny and incredibly cute, I really want to hug her.

When his wife said she was hungry, Wang Aimin immediately got up and said, "Since you're not tired and don't want to sleep, just watch the child first, and I'll go cook something for you."

"Okay," Wang Qianqian replied sweetly, "Thank you for your hard work, Comrade Aimin."

Wang Aimin said with a smile, "You're the one who's worked the hardest, Comrade Qianqian. Thank you for giving us such a lovely daughter. Wait here, I'll go get you something to eat."

After saying that, Wang Aimin turned and walked out of the house.

Looking at the baby, Wang Qianqian's heart overflowed with happiness and emotion. With a loving husband and an adorable daughter, she felt her life was complete.

She owes everything she has now to Song Yueying.

It was Dr. Song who saved her and her daughter's lives, which also indirectly saved Wang Aimin's life.

If anything were to happen to her or her child, Wang Aimin would live with endless self-blame and regret.

Fortunately, the rain stopped and the sky cleared. Wang Qianqian looked up at the window. Something on the windowsill caught her eye, and she sat up abruptly. "Aimin, come in quickly."

Wang Aimin, who was tending the fire in the kitchen, heard the noise and turned pale with fright. He dropped the firewood in his hand and rushed out of the kitchen.

"What's wrong? What's wrong? What happened?" The voice arrived before the person.

When Wang Aimin rushed into the house and saw his wife sitting on the bed unharmed, he breathed a sigh of relief.

She slowed her pace and walked to the bedside, asking softly, "Xixi, what's wrong?"

"Aimin." Wang Qianqian turned her head to look at Wang Aimin, slowly raising her hand to point towards the window. "Aimin, look, what's that on the windowsill?"

Following the direction Wang Qianqian pointed, Wang Aimin clearly saw what was on the windowsill. "It's... White Rabbit milk candy."

“That’s right, it’s White Rabbit milk candy.” Wang Qianqian nodded and said, “It must have been left by Dr. Song before she left. She didn’t take a single candy with her.”

"Does she not like sweets? Or did she forget to take them with her?" Wang Aimin wondered.

Wang Qianqian rolled her eyes at him. "I don't know if she likes candy or not, but I'm sure she didn't forget to take it with her; she deliberately didn't take it."

"Why?" Wang Aimin asked, puzzled. "We gave her two handfuls of candy, and she gave you one and put the other on the windowsill. What does that mean?"

"It means she saved all the candy for me." Wang Qianqian felt a little touched.

The villagers all said that Doctor Song was not someone to be trifled with, that he was a bad person, and that he liked to curse. Relying on his medical skills and knowledge of a few herbs, he started to act arrogantly in the village.

Anyone who goes to her for treatment is verbally abused to the point of being unable to lift their head. Even a dog that walks past her house will be kicked by her, and so on.

But she felt that Dr. Song was a good person.

Wang Qianqian said exactly what was on her mind.

Wang Aimin teased her, saying, "You think she's a good person just because I gave you a couple of candies? Have you forgotten how she scolded you when you went to her for a checkup?"

"Those words, looking back now, weren't really insults," Wang Qianqian murmured. Wang Aimin raised an eyebrow at her. "Not insults?"

“It wasn’t an insult.” Wang Qianqian nodded heavily. “She was insulting me for not eating enough, that I was deliberately starving the baby in my belly, and that I should be careful not to give birth to the baby in the ground.”

"Looking back now, what she said was unpleasant, but she was only trying to help me."

“I eat too little, so I can’t get enough nutrition, which also affects the growth of the baby in my belly. If I go to work in the fields while pregnant, I’ll get bumped and bruised, and both the baby and I will be ruined.”

"It seems everyone has wronged her." Wang Aimin wasn't stupid; listening to his wife's analysis, he also felt that Song Yueying was truly a good person.

That mouth of hers is particularly good at offending people.

Wang Qianqian nodded emphatically.

On the other side.

The heavy rain had just stopped, and the muddy road was slippery.

Song's mother, who was already frail, became breathless after carrying her daughter for a short distance. Seeing a rock ahead, she went over and placed her daughter on it.

Song's mother said, "Little Shadow, stand on the rock for a while, and we'll rest for a bit before continuing."

Song Yueying experienced the feeling of being cared for by her mother for the first time, and her feelings were somewhat complicated, but she didn't cling to it. Besides, her mother was frail, and the road was slippery…

She was also worried that she might fall and get hurt.

“You don’t need to carry me, I can walk back by myself.” Song Yueying said, and was about to jump off the rock, but was stopped by her mother.

"No." Song's mother opened her arms to stop her, tilted her head back, and said in an unquestionable tone, "You stand still and are not allowed to get down."

Song Yueying was stunned, seeing her mother speak so forcefully for the first time.

"Little Shadow, you must be good," Song's mother said. "The muddy road is slippery, and you might fall if you're not careful. Your dress is so pretty today, it would be such a waste if you got it dirty!"

Is this some kind of attempt to appease a child? Song Yueying looked down at her mother's gentle expression and her lips twitched.

Judging from her expression, Song's mother was treating her like a child and coaxing her.

Fearing her daughter would say she wanted to walk by herself again, Song's mother wanted to say something to change the subject. After thinking for a while, she remembered that her daughter hadn't answered the question she had asked earlier.

"Little Shadow, you just asked me if I remember my son-in-law's name. Does that mean you don't remember his name?" Song's mother asked.

...This is a question that Song Yueying really doesn't know how to answer.

The original owner didn't want to take the blame, but she had no choice but to.

Song Yueying lowered her eyelids and said softly, "I definitely remember his name. I asked you to see if you still remember him."

"Good that you remember." Mother Song nodded with satisfaction. "Of course I remember him. He is my son-in-law. There is no one in the whole village who is better looking than him."

"I will never forget him."

Song's mother had no doubts and even made a solemn promise.

Seeing how easily Song's mother was fooled, Song Yueying's slight sense of guilt vanished in an instant. She didn't believe what she said; she kept insisting that she remembered her son-in-law's name and that he was handsome.

They didn't say what the son-in-law's name was.

Song Yueying didn't want to ask any more questions. She just wanted to figure out one thing: if the original owner of this body had a husband, then what about the marriage certificate between the original owner and Qi Yanjue?

Qi Yanjue showed her their marriage certificate, which clearly displayed their names. The seal on it belonged to the capital city, a district of Beijing.

Marriage certificates can be faked, but seals cannot.

Could it be... a woman marrying two husbands?

Upon realizing this possibility, Song Yueying was completely bewildered. This era was too backward; there were no computer systems, so naturally, there was no way to store files.

If a person obtains several marriage certificates, as long as they are not obtained in the same place, no one will find out.

"Little Shadow, let's go." Having rested enough, Song's mother picked up her daughter and continued walking, regardless of whether Song Yueying agreed or not.

Song Yueying's wandering thoughts were pulled back. She felt helpless, but there was nothing she could do to stop it. She could only let her mother carry her on her back, stumbling along the muddy road.

While talking to her daughter about her son-in-law, Song's mother suddenly remembered the gossip she had overheard from the villagers.

She said, "Little Shadow, don't believe what the villagers are saying. They're just talking nonsense. Your son-in-law isn't dead, and you're not some martyr's widow."

Song Yueying was taken aback, but quickly realized that it was the villagers and her mother who had said these words.

For a moment, she didn't know how to tell Song's mother that she was indeed the widow of a martyr and that her beloved son-in-law had sacrificed his life.

"Hmm." Song Yueying gave a soft "hmm," neither admitting nor denying it.

Hearing her daughter's obedient response, Song's mother was very happy. "My dear, you must believe me. People in the village might lie to you, but I am your mother, and I would never lie to you."

"Yes, I believe Mom." Song Yueying thought for a moment and asked, "Mom, who told you these things?"

When the original owner returned to the village, she didn't hide her identity as the widow of a martyr. However, she never told Song's mother about it. So who told Song's mother?

Was it overheard by Song's mother by accident, or was it said to her intentionally? Knowing that Song's mother has a mental illness, saying these things to her must have been malicious.

The son-in-law sacrificed his life, and the daughter became the widow of a martyr. No normal person could accept such a blow.

Not to mention, Song's mother is mentally unstable, and if she believed such things, her mental state might collapse directly.

“Your Aunt Li said it!” Song’s mother readily admitted that Aunt Li had been betrayed, her tone tinged with annoyance. “I don’t remember when she said it.”

"I only remember her coming to our house and telling me that she wanted to introduce me to a husband's family."

“I got angry and chased her out of our house with a stick.”

“Aunt Li!” Song Yueying narrowed her eyes slightly.

The original owner had this person in her memories. From childhood to adulthood, Aunt Li always liked to come to the house to talk to her mother.

Because my mother was beautiful and widowed at a young age, she was often verbally bullied by the men, young and old, in the village. Aunt Li came to our house to talk to my mother and comfort her.

Over time, the mother came to regard Aunt Li as a good friend and often confided her troubles to her. As the original owner of this body grew up, Aunt Li wanted her to marry her mentally challenged son.

Before the original owner got married, Aunt Li didn't dare to be too obvious and could only hint at it to her mother.

My mother is mentally unstable, but she still knows how to protect her daughter.

When Aunt Li realized that hinting to her mother was useless, she spoke directly, and her mother chased her away with a broom. After that, rumors spread throughout the village that her mother's mental illness had worsened and that she was now violent.

It's no exaggeration to say that Aunt Li was the biggest contributor to my mother's worsening mental illness.

The day after she transmigrated, she returned to the village, where Aunt Li was still waiting for her at the village entrance. Unable to get close to her, she said some ambiguous things to mislead the villagers.

"It's your Aunt Li. I never thought she was such a wicked person with a foul mouth," Song's mother cursed. "She's cursing my daughter and son-in-law. She's a bad person."

"She's awful, a rotten person, stinking worse than a rock in a latrine. I'll never be friends with her again."

Perhaps she was too engrossed in her tirade, because as she walked, Song's mother didn't watch her step and almost tripped.

After regaining her balance, she quickly reassured her daughter on her back, "Little Shadow, don't be afraid, don't be afraid. I just didn't mean to, I just didn't mean to."

"I promise I'll walk carefully from now on and I definitely won't let you fall."

"It's okay." Song Yueying suggested, "Put me down, I can walk by myself."

"No, you'll fall." Song's mother refused without even thinking.

“I’m not a child, I don’t fall down so easily.” After saying that, Song Yueying knew that her words were not convincing, so she added, “I definitely won’t fall down.”

Song's mother was very thin and frail, and Song Yueying really didn't want to have such a frail mother carrying her anymore.

Hearing her assurance, Song's mother was visibly taken aback. After thinking it over, she finally asked hesitantly, "You really won't fall? You promise."

"I promise." Song Yueying didn't mind going along with her words.

"Alright," Song's mother conceded, her tone carrying a hint of helplessness that she herself didn't quite understand. Then she added, "If you can't walk steadily, tell me."

"Okay." In order to achieve her goal, Song Yueying naturally agreed without hesitation.

"Tell me, and I'll carry you home," Song's mother instructed again before carefully putting Song Yueying down.

As soon as she landed, Song Yueying's cloth shoes sank into the soft mud, and she soon felt that her shoes were wet.

"How could this happen? Why did this happen?" Song Yueying stared wide-eyed at her mother's feet. Her feet were covered in mud, and her shoes were no longer visible.

She's doing a good job.

"Little Shadow, what's wrong?" Song's mother hurriedly asked, "Is your foot uncomfortable? Let me carry you."

"No need, I can walk by myself." She insisted on walking by herself, even if she had to cry, she would finish. Song Yueying decided to ignore him, lifted her foot and took a step, her shoes covered in a thick layer of mud.

The shoes were also much heavier than before, and they were quite slippery on the wet mud.

After taking only a few steps, Song Yueying felt like she had lived for over twenty years and was a little forgetful of how to walk.

This is truly a speechless experience.

"Little Shadow, if you can't walk anymore, just tell me and I'll carry you." Song's mother instructed, not daring to say more when she saw her daughter like this, for fear that her daughter would scold her for talking too much.

She automatically walked behind her daughter, thinking that if her daughter was unsteady on her feet or about to fall, she could lend a hand.

Song Yueying didn't say anything more, struggling to move her increasingly heavy feet, and then...

She slipped and fell spectacularly onto the muddy road.
