Chapter Seventeen: The Wicked Woman

The next day.

As dawn broke, Song Yueying woke up from her sleep.

She opened her eyes and stared at the old roof for a long time before she remembered that she had traveled to this special era of severe scarcity of resources.

I also remembered what happened yesterday.

"You're awake." A cold voice rang out.

Song Yueying turned her head to look at the source of the sound. On the next bed, a man was sitting against the headboard, looking somewhat haggard, with a pair of sharp eyes staring at her.

Judging from this, it seems like they've been watching her all night!

This thought made Song Yueying very unhappy, feeling that her credibility was being questioned. She looked away, got out of bed, put on her shoes, straightened her clothes, and left.

Seeing her leave the ward without a word, Qi Yanjue assumed she was going to wash up and didn't say anything. Thinking he would talk to her when she returned, Zhao Yiheng wanted to speak with her.

But they waited until dawn, and Song Yueying still hadn't returned. It was then that Qi Yanjue realized the woman might have already left the hospital.

Remembering Zhao Yiheng's repeated instructions last night to persuade Song Yueying to wait for him, he knew he would be nagged endlessly by Zhao Yiheng now that she had run away.

Just thinking about it gives me a headache.

Not to mention, he had thought about Song Yueying's matter all night. In the end... there was no result. Qi Yanjue raised his hand to rub his throbbing temples.

On the other side.

The oxcart has already left the county town.

The oxcart driver was a simply dressed young man with a simple smile on his face. "Comrade Song, did you study in the hospital all night?"

Song Yueying, who was causing Qi Yanjue a headache, was currently sitting on an oxcart, swaying back to the production brigade. She was taken aback by the young man's question.

I remembered that the original owner asked the brigade leader for a letter of introduction, and the reason he wrote was to come to the county hospital to study.

"Mmm," Song Yueying hummed in response.

She thought she was just lucky, that the oxcart had come specifically to pick her up. Thinking about it that way, the brigade leader still valued the original owner of this body as a village doctor.

When she heard someone call out "Comrade Song" as soon as she left the hospital, she thought it wasn't them calling her.

Until the oxcart stopped in front of her, blocking her way, and she saw the person getting off the oxcart. Based on the original owner's memories, Song Yueying recognized him as the brigade leader's son.

He was responsible for driving the oxcart in the brigade, and the original owner of the name could no longer remember it.

The young man rushing to catch the train quickly asked, "Are you tired? Have you had breakfast? I have some here..."

"Comrade, I want to sleep for a while now." Song Yueying interrupted him and then closed her eyes.

"Okay, okay, I'll rush the train slowly. You go to sleep, go to sleep." The man rushing the train turned around and glanced at her, a sheepish smile on his face.

Song Yueying hummed in agreement again, then closed her eyes to rest.

The oxcart swayed and wobbled, and just as it reached the village entrance, before it had even stopped, an aunt rushed to its side.

"Yueying, why are you only just getting back? Your mother's had another attack at home!" The aunt's voice was rather shrill and loud, and everyone working in the fields nearby heard her shouting.

The crowd started discussing it again.

"Has it flared up again?"

"Why is she having another episode?"

“Yes! I saw her sitting at the gate of the yard yesterday afternoon and asked her what she was doing. She told me that her little shadow had gone out and she was waiting for her little shadow.”

"Was she speaking clearly at that time? Did she show any signs of having a relapse?"

"No, I could hear her clearly, and she didn't seem to be having a relapse."

"Then why did she have another relapse?"

"Yes, why did she suddenly have another attack?"

The aunt rushed over without a care in the world. Fearing the oxcart would hit her, the young man had no choice but to stop. Song Yueying got off the oxcart, ignoring the murmurs of the people in the field.

Looking up, I saw a round, disc-shaped face. The fat on that face was piled up so much that I could barely see the eyes.

This auntie's surname is Li, and she is the squad leader's wife. Taking advantage of the squad leader's influence, she often acts arrogantly within the squad.

He was also one of the very few people in the production team whom the original owner feared. After all, a local official is more powerful than a distant one, and the team leader, who managed the entire production team, carried considerable weight in his words.

Aunt Li stepped forward and took Song Yueying's hand, saying with a look of sympathy, "Yueying! Your mother's life has been so pitiful. She didn't enjoy much happiness after marrying your father, and then your father..."

Aunt Li seemed unable to continue, and shook her head.

"Aunt Li, you just said my mother had a relapse, right? I'll go back and check on her right now." Song Yueying pretended to be anxious and withdrew her hand from Aunt Li's.

"Oh! What's the rush!" Aunt Li grabbed Song Yueying's arm quickly, preventing her from leaving. "You silly child, I haven't finished speaking yet."

"Look at your tired face, you must not have slept well last night. Look how thin you are, you must not have eaten well either, poor thing! It breaks my heart to see you like this."

"Moon Shadow, from now on you'll be part of my family, and I'll make sure you're well-fed and healthy."

"Auntie loves delicate little girls like you the most. Auntie promises that she will never let you be bullied."

"Aunt Li, what are you saying? I don't understand." Song Yueying looked at Aunt Li with a blank expression, but in her heart she cursed this shameless old woman.

In the original owner's memories, this Aunt Li was no good person. In particular, she had her eye on the original owner and tried every means to trick her into becoming her mentally challenged son's wife.

"Oh dear, why are you pretending not to understand? Your mother and I have already made arrangements. You're coming to my house for lunch today, and I'll make you some delicious braised pork."

"I'll give you some good nourishment. Look how thin you are, you're practically unrecognizable."

That vicious and disgusting old woman is trying to trap her again. Song Yueying sneered inwardly, gripping Aunt Li's wrist as she held onto her arm.

She subtly increased the pressure, but Song Yueying's face remained innocent and bewildered, her eyes clear and bright. "Aunt Li, didn't you just say my mother had another attack?"

"My mom is having a relapse, how could she have agreed to have lunch at your house?"

"This..." Aunt Li didn't expect Song Yueying to ask such a question, and for a moment she couldn't think of a reply, so she was a little speechless.

The reason she dared to so blatantly set a trap for Song Yueying was because she was certain that Song Yueying wouldn't dare to break ties with her.

Once she gets Song Yueying home, she has a way to keep her trapped inside. With her in the house, it's easy for her son to do whatever he wants to Song Yueying.

Even if we assume that Song Yueying spends one night at her house, regardless of whether anything happened between her and her son, those in the village who had designs on Song Yueying will no longer dare to entertain such thoughts.

Those around him, upon hearing this, wore expressions of understanding and disdain.

Everyone in the village knew what Aunt Li was up to. But because she was the village chief's wife, no one dared to say it aloud.
