Chapter Forty Stepping on a Mouse

Seeing Song Yueying suddenly stand still, her back stiff, Qi Yanjue asked in confusion, "What's wrong?"

"Ahhh! Qi Yanjue, help me! The rats are back!" After taking a few steps back, Song Yueying suddenly turned around and buried her head in Qi Yanjue's arms.

With trembling hands, she gripped his shirt tightly, jumped up, and wrapped her arms and legs around him, clinging to him like an octopus.

Suddenly, he was hugged again, and Qi Yanjue froze.

He didn't know where to put his hands, so he just left them outstretched. He looked down at the small body clinging to him, still trembling uncontrollably.

She is really small.

A strange feeling rose in Qi Yanjue's heart. Before he could figure out what it was, he saw two black rats running back and forth not far away, cautiously probing.

She wasn't lying to him; she was genuinely frightened by the rat when she jumped on him.

"Song Yueying, let me go first." Qi Yanjue's voice was not as stern and cold as before.

"I won't let go, I won't let go no matter what this time." A muffled voice came from his chest as Song Yueying's slender arms tightly gripped his neck.

It seemed they wouldn't stop until they strangled him to death.

Qi Yanjue raised his hands, grasped her arms, and pulled them away from his neck with a slight force.

"I don't want to get down, I don't want to." Song Yueying struggled, her small body still trying to burrow into his arms. It was as if she wanted to hide inside his body.

Qi Yanjue was quite helpless and did not forcibly pull her off him as he had done before.

Instead, he asked in a gentle tone, "Why don't you come down first, I'll go help you catch the rats?"

“The rats have long since disappeared. You didn’t see any rats, so how can you help me catch them?” Song Yueying clearly didn’t believe him.

"If you don't believe me, I won't believe you either."

"Hey, this is his fault, I have to take the blame," Qi Yanjue tried to explain to her, "The mouse didn't get away. I didn't believe you before because I didn't see the mouse."

"I see a mouse now. Come down, I'm going to catch it."

Knowing she was terrified, Qi Yanjue spoke with a tone of reassurance.

After thinking about it, Song Yueying could only nod in agreement.

"If you dare to lie to me, I'll poison you with one pill." After threatening him, Song Yueying finally got off Qi Yanjue.

"Okay." Qi Yanjue nodded readily.

The moment her feet touched the ground, one foot stepped on a small, soft lump. Curious, Song Yueying rubbed it, and the soft lump made a strange squeaking sound.

"What's that sound?" Song Yueying asked in confusion, glancing down at the sound.

Old...rat.

Oh my god! I've made something of myself, I stepped on a mouse.

Unaware of Song Yueying's inner turmoil, Qi Yanjue confidently remarked, "You're lucky; you even managed to step on a mouse."

Qi Yanjue wanted to laugh, but he was also a little impressed by her good luck. Just as her foot landed, the mouse happened to run over and was stepped on.

Song Yueying didn't make a sound this time, and her slender body collapsed softly.

Sensing something was wrong, Qi Yanjue acted faster than he thought, scooping her up in his arms and holding her close.

Upon closer inspection, it became clear that she had fainted.

Song Yueying fainted without warning, and the mouse under her foot thought it was free.

As a result, a large foot stepped forward and stomped down hard, sending it to its death.

"What's wrong? What happened? I heard Xiao Yingzi's voice..." Song's mother rushed in anxiously, still holding a spatula in her hand.

Seeing her daughter and son-in-law hugging, Song's mother quickly turned around, "Oh dear! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to."

Qi Yanjue felt a little embarrassed when his mother-in-law caught him holding someone else's daughter. He bent down, picked up Song Yueying, walked a few steps to the bedside, and gently put her down.

"Mom," Qi Yanjue called out to Song's mother, then stood by the bed and looked at Song Yueying.

When Song's mother turned around, she saw her daughter lying on the bed, with her son-in-law standing by the bedside, protecting her like a guardian. She immediately realized that something was wrong.

He rushed to the bedside, about to call for his daughter, but was stopped by Qi Yanjue beside him.

“Xiao Qi.” Song’s mother looked at Qi Yanjue with a puzzled expression.

"Mom, she's terrified. Let her sleep for a while," Qi Yanjue said, feeling extremely guilty as he looked at Song Yueying's pale face.

"Is Little Shadow asleep?" Song's mother looked at Song Yueying lying on the bed, but asked Qi Yanjue.

"Mm." Qi Yanjue nodded gently.

Knowing that her daughter was asleep, Song's mother was no longer worried. She smiled and said to Qi Yanjue, "Alright, Xiao Qi, you stay here and watch over Xiao Yingzi. I'll go back and continue cooking."

She hadn't finished cooking when she heard her daughter's exclamation. Thinking something had happened, she quickly dropped what she was doing and ran in to check.

"Okay, Mom, thank you for your hard work," Qi Yanjue said.

"It's not hard work, it's not hard work," Song's mother said twice, then turned and left.

After Song's mother left, Qi Yanjue sat on the edge of the bed, his scrutinizing gaze fixed on Song Yueying's face. "Song Yueying, what kind of person are you really?"

Upon witnessing him being surrounded and attacked, she panicked and ran headfirst into a wall, injuring her head and causing it to bleed profusely.

After he collapsed, she bravely pulled him out of the blood-soaked alley and took him to the hospital.

When she encountered a vicious human trafficker, she helped the police catch him and also rescued the women and children who had been abducted by the trafficker.

These incidents demonstrate that she is a girl with both brains and courage.

This intelligent and courageous girl was so afraid of mice that she jumped on him. She even fainted from fright after stepping on a mouse.

Perhaps Qi Yanjue was too engrossed in his thoughts and didn't notice that Song Yueying, who was lying on the bed, had opened her eyes.

She glanced at Qi Yanjue, then sat up.

"You're awake." Qi Yanjue snapped back to reality, his deep eyes staring straight at her.

"Hmm." Song Yueying turned her head and looked around. This was her room.

"You..." Qi Yanjue was about to say something when a commotion outside the courtyard interrupted him. Song Yueying got up from the bed. "You stay inside, I'll go out and take a look."

Before Qi Yanjue could say anything, Song Yueying put on her shoes and walked out of the house.

"Boss, open the door! Boss, help me! Open the door, help me!"

"Big sister, please come out and save my brother, he's dying."

"Dr. Song, open the door! Open the door quickly!"

"Dr. Song, please open the door quickly! Dr. Song, I need your help!"

The noise outside grew louder and louder. Song Yueying had just stepped out of the main room when she bumped into her mother, who was hurrying out of the kitchen. She had obviously heard the noise too.

"What...what happened?" Song's mother asked in a trembling voice, cold sweat beginning to appear on her forehead, and her breathing becoming increasingly rapid.

She could tell from the sounds that a lot of people had come to the courtyard.

"I don't know." Song Yueying shook her head and pointed to the courtyard gate. "I heard them calling for my help in a panic. They must have come to see me. I'll go check on them."

In emergencies, sometimes the rescue depends on just a few minutes or seconds. After saying this, Song Yueying quickly walked towards the courtyard gate.

"No, you can't go out." Song's mother tried to stop her, even reaching out to grab her daughter's hand. But she was too late, watching helplessly as her daughter went to open the door.

Cold sweat poured down Song's mother's forehead. She swallowed hard. Her voice was hoarse as she said, "Don't go out, you can't go out! They'll beat you to death!"

"Don't go out, they will really beat you to death, you really can't go out."

Near the courtyard gate, people were talking loudly. Song's mother's voice was very soft, and Song Yueying, who was anxious to rescue the person, didn't hear it.

The courtyard gate opened, and the people at the gate fell silent upon seeing her.

The child standing at the very front suddenly knelt down in front of Song Yueying, his head hitting the ground heavily. "Big sister, please, save my brother!"

"As long as you're willing to save my brother, I'll let my older sister yell at me all she wants, and you can even hit me if you want."

Listen to what she's saying! Let her curse all she wants. Song Yueying isn't crazy; she doesn't curse people for no reason.

"Yes, Dr. Song, please save his brother! His brother is dying."

"It's such a pity that his younger brother is so young. It would be such a shame if he were to die like this."

"Shut up, all of you," Song Yueying snapped at the crowd, her voice soft and gentle. Even when she was scolding someone, her voice sounded like she was being coquettish; it was just her natural talent.

Fortunately, the original owner liked to curse, which left a deep impression on everyone.

As soon as she spoke up, everyone immediately shut up. Reaching out to help the child who was kneeling and kowtowing to his feet, Song Yueying asked, "Where is your younger brother?"

The child stood up and pointed into the crowd, saying, "There."

Following the direction the child was pointing, Song Yueying saw a man in the crowd holding a little boy whose face was as red as a liver.

The little boy was breathing weakly, and although his mouth was open, he didn't cry out.

This is caused by a foreign object stuck in the throat.

"Give me the child." Song Yueying walked over quickly.

As people watched her approach, they all stepped back, including the man carrying the child.

“Give me the child, or he’ll die.” Song Yueying’s face darkened. “Are your eyes just for show? Can’t you see his breathing is getting weaker and weaker?”

Song Yueying didn't want to curse; these people were asking for it.

Everyone looked at the child in the man's arms, whose face had turned from a liverish color to a bluish-purple.

Breathing... was indeed very weak, just as Song Yueying had said.

The man's face changed drastically, and the woman beside him burst into tears. Between sobs, she called out the child's name, "March, what's wrong? Don't scare your mother!"

The child said eagerly, "Dad, quickly give the little brother to the eldest sister."

The man then realized what was happening and quickly handed the child to Song Yueying.

Song Yueying took the child and quickly placed him face down on her lap. At the same time, she pushed and pressed on the child's back several times, and then something came out of the child's mouth.

The child spat out what was in his mouth and burst into tears.

"She cried, she cried, March cried."

"If he can cry, he should be alright, right?"

"Of course! Didn't you see that Xiao Sanyue's face turned blue just now?"

A child's cries are the most heartbreaking for parents, but at this moment, the child's mother was holding her child, laughing and crying at the same time.

"Thank you, Big Sister! Thank you, Big Sister, for saving my brother!" The child knelt down again and kowtowed to Song Yueying. "Big Sister is my brother's savior, and she is my savior too."

Then came the child's parents, who didn't try to comfort the crying child. They thanked her while kowtowing to Song Yueying.

Song Yueying said, "Get up, all of you, and take the child to the commune's health center as soon as possible. Tell the doctor about the child's condition truthfully; the doctor knows how to examine the child."

“Okay, okay, we’ll take the child to the commune clinic for a check-up right now,” the child’s parents replied readily.

He bowed to Song Yueying again before hurriedly leaving with his child.

"Big sister, thank you for saving my brother. I will definitely repay you," the child said solemnly.

Song Yueying looked at the little boy, who was probably only ten years old. He was wearing patched clothes with holes in his pants and straw sandals on his feet.

It's said that children from rural areas mature early, and that's certainly true. For such a young child to understand gratitude and even say he'll repay her is truly rare, extremely rare.

"No need, I don't need you to report..." Wait a minute, what did this kid call her? Big Sister? Was the original owner very familiar with this kid?

The original owner had several children in her memories who usually followed her around causing trouble. Song Yueying found the face of one of the children, and it overlapped with the face of the child in front of you.

"Your name is May?" Song Yueying asked, as the child's face in the original owner's memory matched the name May.

The child nodded, "Yes, my name is May, the big sister..."

"Little Shadow, Little Shadow, don't be afraid! I'm here to save you! I'm here to save you!" Song's mother rushed out of the yard with a wooden stick in her hand.

Standing in front of Song Yueying, Song's mother waved the wooden stick in her hand, looking at everyone with a wary expression.

"She's gone mad! She's gone mad again!" someone shouted. Then everyone scattered like birds and beasts, quickly disappearing from sight.

Only Song Yueying, her daughter, and the child named Wuyue remained in the same spot.

Upon hearing the word "mad," Song's mother appeared dazed and confused. Her whole body began to tremble, and even the wooden stick she was tightly gripping fell to the ground.

Sensing that something was wrong with Song's mother, Song Yueying told Wuyue to stay away. She then stepped around to stand in front of Song's mother, her eyes fixed on the changes in her expression.

She reached out and grasped Song's mother's hand, the icy coldness of her skin and the sweat on her palm startling her. Coupled with Song's mother's increasingly rapid breathing and trembling body…

Excessive fright, causing the mind to be trapped in an endless vortex of fear, can lead to these physical conditions.

Song's mother trembled all over, her consciousness gradually fading, yet she still firmly gripped Song Yueying's hand. She kept repeating something under her breath.

Song Yueying coaxed her mother back into the main room and made her sit on a long bench. She sat obediently, but her hands remained clasped tightly to Song Yueying's, making her appear restless.

His face was full of fear and anxiety, yet his eyes were unfocused, staring at Song Yueying without any direction.

She kept repeating, "Don't go out, stop hitting, don't go out, stop hitting, Song Ming, don't go out, Song Ming, Song Ming..."

Song Ming, found by Song Yueying in the original owner's memories, is the husband of Song's mother and the original owner's father.
