Fu Qixun finally stepped forward slowly, raised his hand and gently patted Qin Ying's shoulder. This gesture, once full of love, now carried an indescribable weight:
"Come on, come with me and get some fresh air!"
He ignored Zhang Jianguo's curious and anxious look and took Qin Ying to the other end of the corridor.
The light and shadow in the stairwell were mottled and intertwined. Fu Qixun leaned against the railing and took out a cigarette from his pocket, but did not light it. He just rubbed it repeatedly between his fingers.
The fingers holding the cigarette tapped lightly on the stair railing, and the metal railing hummed:
"Remember the day you became a bilingual proofreader? You stood in the living room reading foreign literature, and everyone was shocked by your excellence."
He took off his military cap and held it in his palm, wrinkling the brim.
"Everyone thought you were a country girl from Chao County, but when those foreign words came out of your mouth, I looked at you and suddenly felt like I was looking at another person."
Qin Ying stood there nervously. The feeling of facing Fu Qixun now was even more difficult to cope with than facing the unknown danger on the operating table.
Her nails dug deep into her palms.
In the smell of disinfectant, she seemed to see the scene of that day again.
Everyone sitting in the Fu family's living room had a look of astonishment. The image of Fu Hanzhou's suddenly tense jawline was now more clearly presented in their minds, and Fu Qixun's gaze was ten times sharper than before:
"Now you're showing off your skills on the operating table again?"
He suddenly approached, his warm breath spraying on her forehead:
"Little girl, how many 'other sides' do you have hidden?"
Qin Ying was tense all over and was about to explain when Fu Qixun raised his hand to interrupt her:
"Yingying, the Fu family has always treated you as one of their own, and Hanzhou even protected you with his life."
He finally lit a cigarette, the smoke blurring his expression:
"But some extraordinary abilities, if hidden too deeply, can easily hurt yourself and those who care about you."
He turned and looked at Qin Ying, his eyes filled with scrutiny and worry.
"When Hanzhou wakes up, there are some things I hope you can talk to him about."
After saying that, he put out the cigarette on the windowsill and patted Qin Ying on the back. His gesture was encouraging but also a bit heavy.
"Let's go and see Hanzhou."
In the intensive care unit, the monitor ticked regularly.
Xu Jinshu held Fu Hanzhou's hand, his eyes red.
When she heard the door open, she turned around and forced a smile, but her voice was filled with tears:
"Yingying, today is all thanks to you. If you hadn't made a prompt decision, Hanzhou would have..."
She choked up and couldn't continue, her voice trembling with the pain of surviving a disaster.
"Director Zhang said this is a miracle! You're even better than those senior professors in the hospital!"
Fu Hanting rushed over and hugged her, her hair brushing against Qin Ying's iodine-stained collar:
"Sister-in-law, you are really the lucky star of our family. I admire you more and more!"
Qin Ying forced a shrug and caught a glimpse of Fu Qixun standing by the window, his back to the crowd but his military cap wrinkled.
She suddenly realized that rather than feeling grateful, the stagnant air in the room was more like a net waiting to be collected.
"But, sister-in-law, what exactly is this method of stopping bleeding that's not even in the textbooks? Tell me about it. When I get to the department, I must show it off to them..."
Fu Hanting chattered away, her words full of admiration and respect for Qin Ying.
Qin Ying's heart skipped a beat.
She looked at Fu Qixun's straight back, and her throat tightened when she thought of what he had just said:
"I'm a foreign language proofreader, so I'm exposed to a lot of foreign journals. I've repeatedly deduced the latest research..."
Fu Hanting nodded thoughtfully and was about to ask another question when Fu Qixun suddenly turned around. The sound of his military boots hitting the ground startled everyone.
"Why worry about this? Your brother's safety is more important than anything else!"
He glanced at Qin Ying's pale face, then looked at his unconscious son, his voice like ice chips:
"Hanzhou needs to rest!"
Qin Ying breathed a sigh of relief silently. Fu Qixun suppressed everyone's doubts, but he could only avoid them on the first day.
She stood in front of Fu Hanzhou's bed, carefully observing the numbers jumping on the monitor, but her thoughts were drifting away.
After Fu Hanzhou woke up, he would not only ask about the violin, but also about the surgery. She had to think about how to answer it so that he would be more receptive.
She mechanically pressed the blood pressure measurement button. Amid the humming sound of the machine, she saw the ward door being pushed open out of the corner of her eye.
Wei Zhuolan was standing at the door wearing a neat Zhongshan suit and carrying a bag of fruit.
His gaze paused on Qin Ying for a moment, then swept across everyone in the ward, and finally landed on Fu Hanting's face for a few seconds, revealing a gentle and elegant smile.
Then he looked at Fu Qixun respectfully and said:
"Uncle Fu, Aunt Xu, I'm here to see Captain Fu."
"Zhuo Lan is here!"
Xu Jinshu greeted him while wiping her tears.
Hearing his voice, Fu Hanting's back straightened instantly, and she almost ran towards him, with the tips of her ears flushed:
"Teacher Wei, it's such a hassle to make this special trip!"
When she looked up at him, her eyes were filled with unconcealable joy.
He reached out and naturally took the fruit from Wei Zhuolan's hand, put it on the table, and stood with him again.
Wei Zhuolan looked at her gentle and shy appearance, and his Adam's apple moved:
"It's reasonable for us to come and see it."
He tilted his head slightly, and when he looked at Fu Hanting, the tenderness in his eyes almost overflowed, and the corners of his mouth curled up slightly:
"After all...we will all be a family in the future."
Fu Hanting's face turned red all of a sudden, and she glared at him secretly, looking like a shy and cute little girl.
