Hearing the noise, Qin Ying turned her head, put down her needlework, stood up stiffly and looked at him:
"Brother Fu...are you done?"
Fu Hanzhou walked over quickly, hugged her in his arms, and rested his chin on her shoulder:
"I'm sorry I'm late!"
Qin Ying's body suddenly stiffened like a puppet. The smell of tobacco mixed with the scent of soapberries on his body rushed into her nose. She suddenly remembered that when she first arrived in Yancheng, he slept in the study, while she stared at the light leaking through the crack in the door and counted his heartbeats all night.
At this moment, I was strangled by him and it hurt, but I inexplicably felt that... this temperature was warmer than a kerosene lamp.
She raised her head slightly, feeling a little strange. Didn't he just go to the study to do some work? Why did he say he was back late?
It seems that I was too suspicious just now. Brother Fu is the head of the group. He has always kept her engagement and believes in her character. How could he not be trustworthy?
As she thought about this, her heart felt like she had drunk honey, but she suddenly felt something warm flowing down her neck. She tilted her head and looked at Fu Hanzhou in surprise, feeling shy and nervous:
"Fu, Brother Fu, you're not too late. I just took out your clothes to mend them, and I haven't finished them yet."
"Well, it's not too late. There will be plenty of time to do it later. I will do it with you!"
Fu Hanzhou hugged her tighter, as if he was afraid that she would disappear. His two arms like iron chains held her in his arms, but she could feel his slight trembling.
*
The smell of disinfectant pierced Fu Hanzhou's nose, and he suddenly opened his eyes. The incandescent light exploded into a spot of light in his pupils.
The regular ticking of the heart monitor reached his ears. He subconsciously reached for his waist—where his pistol should have been, but he only felt layers of medical bandages.
"Captain Fu! You're finally awake!"
The nurse's voice shattered his chaos.
Only then did he realize that he was lying on a bed in a field hospital, the bandage around his waist was oozing blood, and the roar of helicopters circling in his ears.
He struggled to sit up, feeling a tearing pain in the back of his neck, and memories flooded back:
While performing a counter-terrorism mission, he blocked the explosion to protect his teammates and then fell into darkness...
But there was another memory surging in my mind:
He was wearing a military uniform, standing in front of a red brick building covered in slogans. A girl with pigtails smiled at him, holding up an enamel pot, the scent of soap nuts wafting from her hair. And in the beautiful handwriting of a diary, it read, "Cherish the one in front of you."
"Captain, the doctor said you've been in a coma for five days and may have temporary amnesia..."
The voice of my comrade came.
Fu Hanzhou clutched the bed sheet tightly, his palms full of cold sweat.
Those memories about "1980" and "Qin Ying" were too real, so real that he could recall the girl's gentle yet firm tone when she spoke, with a reassuring power that seemed to soothe all the anxiety and pain in the world.
But when I looked down, I saw the smartwatch on my wrist, and the dial showed "November 6, 2046".
"Captain, this is what was taken from you."
The doctor handed over a sealed bag, inside of which lay a complete black jade pendant. The front was embossed with intertwined dragon and phoenix patterns, and the back was engraved with three ancient seal characters: "Dragon and Phoenix Pair".
Fu Hanzhou's fingers suddenly trembled - the dragon and phoenix pendant in his dream was two separate halves, but the jade pendant in front of him was now a whole. The warm touch made his eyes inexplicably hot.
He subconsciously clenched the jade pendant. The pair of dragon and phoenix were lifelike, and the smooth edges exuded an inexplicable sense of familiarity.
A sentence kept echoing in my mind: "Can the dragon and phoenix pendant bless lovers to finally get married?"
"Captain, this jade pendant..."
His comrades looked at him in a trance, with puzzled expressions:
"You were holding it tightly when it exploded, and the medical staff had a hard time prying it open."
He suddenly recalled his last glance before passing out: in the glow of the explosion, the dragon and phoenix jade pendant flew from his palm, falling into a distorted blue light. And now, the jade pendant in his hand was slightly warm, as if something was awakening in his blood.
He reached for the phone beside his pillow and unlocked the photo album - inside were photos of him leading the team in training, and photos of his parents, but there was no trace of "Qin Ying".
Maybe it's just a ridiculous dream?!
But the pain of loss was so real, squeezing his chest and making it hard for him to breathe.
He pinched his eyebrows and subconsciously clenched the jade pendant. Just like in his dream, this jade pendant was also a family heirloom and he had worn it since he was a child. His mother said that it had been blessed by a high monk and could ensure safety. He didn't care at first.
However, after joining the army, it was just as she said, and she was able to escape danger every time she wore it.
Maybe it’s just a psychological effect, but this time I had a dream related to this jade pendant.
"Captain?"
Guard Xiao Li saw that he was lost in thought and said with concern:
"Do you want to rest a little longer?"
Fu Hanzhou's eyelids trembled. He put away the jade pendant, leaned against the head of the bed, and waved his hand.
Just as I was about to say it was okay, the door of the ward was pushed open and a leader in military uniform walked in.
"Xiao Fu, take good care of your injuries."
The leader patted Fu Hanzhou's shoulder with concern in his tone.
"Thank you for your concern, Chief!"
Fu Hanzhou propped himself up and sat up.
The leader who came in pressed his shoulders to stop him:
"Just lie still. I'm here to visit you on behalf of the army, and secondly, I have something to tell you."
Xiao Li moved a chair to the bedside and stood there waiting.
“There will be a world-class high-end academic seminar in a few days, which will include many topics on the integration of cultural relics protection and cutting-edge technology.
Your superiors wanted you to be a special guest from across various fields. They originally wanted you to lead the security team. After all, you have extensive experience in border cultural relics protection missions, but your current situation..."
