Chapter 138 The Mansion

Chapter 138 The Mansion

The sports car drove smoothly on the road.

Xin Que's gaze fell on the deserted road.

It was a bright, sunny day, but the glaring sunlight now felt utterly lifeless; the sun didn't look like the sun at all, but rather like an incandescent light bulb.

The wide road was deserted except for their car.

The green belts, streetlights, and shops receding outside the car window looked like they were copied and pasted. No matter how many intersections we drove, it was always the same few things outside the car window, and even the shops were the same few over and over again.

Luo Huayi was on high alert from the moment she got on the bus.

The road doesn't look like a road, and the car doesn't look like a car.

They kept going around in circles with the same scenery.

No matter how you look at it, it's like a driving simulator game in an arcade, where you sit in a toy car and watch the projected driving scene.

He glanced at the steering wheel, which was completely unresponsive to his commands, and his palms became slightly sweaty.

The car gradually slowed down.

The view outside the car window seemed to have been replaced out of thin air; a luxurious mansion that both of them recognized very well suddenly appeared in front of the car.

The paper cart carrying the three people slowly drove into the spacious courtyard.

“Come on,” Luo Jingchen leaned forward and grabbed Xin Que’s chair, smiling at her. “The doctor is already waiting at home.”

Luo Huayi and Xin Que got out of the car with calm expressions.

But when Luo Huayi walked through the door and saw Dr. Xu sitting on the sofa in the living room, her expression changed.

"Is he your private doctor?" Xin Que asked him in a low voice.

Luo Huayi nodded.

“Sister-in-law,” Luo Jingchen placed a glass of water in front of her, his words carrying a hidden meaning, “Dr. Xu’s medical skills are absolutely reliable, but he doesn’t treat gunshot wounds or dead people.”

Xin Que understood.

This is a warning.

Dr. Xu's every move was under the control of the prison.

In other words... the prison was conducting a thorough search of the entire space, following that person's instructions, to find the factor that was interfering with her torture.

Luo Huayi realized what was happening and immediately looked at Dr. Xu, who now seemed like a complete stranger.

Did those who control them see the fact that Dr. Xu was supposed to diagnose Xin Que?

Dr. Xu left a box of stomach medicine and a few words of medical advice without any expression, then got up to say goodbye.

Xin Que and Luo Huayi watched as Dr. Xu's figure vanished into thin air at the doorway, as if an NPC had respawned.

“Mom and Dad are working overtime at the company today,” Luo Jingchen said with a smile, standing behind the sofa with his elbows resting on the back of the sofa near Xin Que’s ear. He leaned forward and looked down at her slightly. “It’s just us at home alone. What would you like to eat?”

Xin Que's probing gaze fell on Luo Huayi. Mom and Dad?

Luo Huayi's lips twitched.

That couple had long since died.

I reckon the one who comes back will be a monster like Luo Jingchen.

"You have a sensitive stomach," Luo Jingchen continued, "Should I make something easy to digest?"

Without even thinking, Luo Huayi refused, "No need, let's go upstairs and rest first."

Ignoring Luo Jingchen's suddenly gloomy expression, Xin Que and Luo Huayi got up and went upstairs.

Walking to the small room at the end of the second floor, Xin Que saw the familiar furnishings that Jin Cheng remembered.

"Ah," Luo Huayi locked the door, then realized that his room in the Luo family's old house was much cramped compared to the villa, and he felt inexplicably awkward. "This room is indeed a bit small, don't mind it."

Xin Que didn't care about that. "You know the old house better than I do. Do you have any clues after you come in?"

Luo Huayi shook her head, "Judging from the furnishings, it looks like an old house. Except for the absence of the servants, there's nothing wrong with it."

“Luo Jingchen’s car is a paper car…” Xin Que touched the chair under her; it was made of wood, not cardboard.

"Is this space a mock haunted house?" Luo Huayi guessed.

Xin Que looked at the window of Luo Huayi's room.

The view outside the window was like a stiff, studio set.

Xin Que got up and walked to the window, looking down.

Their eyes met those of the young man who stood motionless on the lawn on the first floor, looking up at Xin Que.

Seeing Xin Que stop by the window, Luo Hua instinctively got up and followed her, looking down at the window. What she saw startled her at Luo Jingchen's indifferent gaze.

With a "whoosh," Luo Huayi pulled the curtains shut, blocking the window completely and cutting off Luo Jingchen's view.

"What time is it?" Xin Que asked him.

Luo Huayi looked around the bedroom and finally saw the digital clock she had used many years ago on the table. "If the time is accurate, it's noon."

Xin Que followed Luo Huayi's gaze and saw that the table was empty.

She glanced at the oblivious Luo Huayi, but ultimately didn't expose his illusion. "They probably won't let this dinner time go by. If you go to the restaurant later, don't touch anything you see."

Luo Huayi nodded.

No sooner had he finished speaking than there was a knock on the door.

“Sister-in-law,” the young man’s boastful voice rang out, “I’m out having dinner with my brother.”

You'll need to take your medicine later.

Xin Que, without changing her expression, pulled down the doorknob and opened the door. "Hmm."

Luo Huayi didn't even glance at Luo Jingchen, and quickly followed Xin Que downstairs.

Luo Jingchen's enthusiasm for Xin Que was inexplicable.

“This,” Luo Jingchen ladled out a bowl of hot soup and handed it to Xin Que with one hand, “is to relieve stomach problems.”

His right hand, holding the antique-style soup bowl with its distinct knuckles, had fair skin that wasn't exactly pale. His index and middle fingers were adorned with several punk-style rings, which matched his rebellious appearance.

Xin Que smiled gently, "I won't drink."

Luo Huayi stared at the plate in front of her, looking left and right but couldn't find anything strange about the dishes.

Luo Jingchen's expression betrayed a deliberately feigned melancholy as he took the soup bowl back.

“Brother,” Luo Jingchen said with a cold expression, “take whatever you want to eat.”

Xin Que kept her eyes straight ahead, arms crossed, looking down at the tableware in front of her. Once the mealtime was over, she calmed down and became as still as an old monk in meditation, completely ignoring Luo Jingchen's enthusiasm.

Just as Luo Huayi was about to ask Xin Que when she would leave the restaurant, he turned his head and the surrounding scenery suddenly changed as his vision swayed.

The air was filled with the hustle and bustle of people, and I saw people coming and going.

"Jin Cheng?" The little boy in his elementary school uniform waved his hand in front of his eyes. "What are you daydreaming about?"

Luo Huayi was taken aback.

He looked at the stainless steel dining table in front of him, "What am I doing here..."

"You arrived late to begin with, and if you dawdle any longer while eating, the dean will call you out and scold you again—" the little boy drawled, then grabbed a steaming bun from the stainless steel plate and took a bite.

The sounds of children chattering as they eat are mixed with the shouts of teachers and volunteers coming and going to maintain order in the queue.

The woman with her sleeves rolled up stopped as she passed Luo Huayi. "Hmm? Not having much of an appetite today?"

Upon hearing the voice from her distant memory, Luo Huayi reacted with lightning speed, grabbing her chopsticks to pick up some food. "No, I—"

"Smack."

"Smack."

Xin Que didn't even lift her eyelids. She twirled the chopsticks in her hand, knocking away Luo Huayi's absent-minded hand that was about to pick up food, and knocking away the small plate that Luo Jingchen was about to push in front of her.

"Stop making those silly gestures at the dinner table." Xin Que ignored Luo Jingchen's exaggerated gesture of clutching his hand in pain, her smile devoid of warmth.
