Chapter 87 When Gods and Ghosts Walk at Night

Chapter 87 When Gods and Ghosts Walk at Night

Xin Quegang sent the fake death scene he had staged to Xin Xin.

Now that Song Wenxian has been released on bail, she needs to hurry up and lure the last piece of the puzzle to kill him.

Sure enough, Xin Xin called immediately.

"Xin Que is dead?" The woman's originally gentle voice was distorted into a sharper tone by the surprise of her enemy's death.

After a moment, she seemed to realize that her emotions were too obvious, and her tone turned cold again. "How do I know it was Xin Que who died, or that you're just fooling me?"

Xin Que's voice, disguised by a mechanical tone, remained calm: "Boss, if you're worried... why don't you bring some people over to take a look yourself?"

"I'll put the body in an abandoned factory. I'll send you the address."

Xin Xin pretended to be silent, and after a long while she only said "I'll think about it" before hanging up the phone.

Fishing for Song Wenxian is easier than fishing for Xin Xin.

"Your little girlfriend is in my hands," Xin Que said in a low, ruthless voice. "At noon today, bring me what I want to the abandoned factory, or else..."

Song Wenxian's already taut nerves snapped when this kidnapping phone call came.

...

While waiting in the abandoned factory, Xin Que finally had a chance to take a look at the backup machine.

There were missed calls from unknown numbers.

Xin Que called back, but the other party's phone was switched off.

Without much thought, she simply called Cheng Zheng and asked, "Hello?"

The voice on Cheng Zheng's end sounded strange, as if he were in a busy public place. "Xin Que?"

Xin Que frowned. "You know my phone number?"

She took the business card from Cheng Zheng's pocket while he was unconscious, so he shouldn't have known who she was.

Cheng Zheng paused for a moment, then said, "I noticed that when I transferred the money before."

"Is Luo Huayi here?" Xin Que asked. "I need him to come over."

Cheng Zheng readily agreed, "I'm off work today, and President Luo is at the company... How about I give you President Luo's private phone number so you can ask him yourself?"

Xin Que didn't answer and hung up the phone directly.

Cheng Zheng is acting strangely.

But I can't quite put my finger on what's wrong.

She didn't know much about Cheng Zheng, but from her several interactions with him, she could tell that he was a cautious person.

Someone like that wouldn't casually disclose their employer's contact information.

She put away her phone and looked out the window at the sports car that had slowly come to a stop in the open space.

Xin's car arrived first.

The woman was dressed very casually, wearing a hat and mask, and was followed closely by two bodyguards.

Xin Que slowly backed away from the windowsill.

Xin Xin followed the bodyguard cautiously toward the location the assassin had given her.

The bodyguards were all trusted confidants given to her by her mother; they would never betray her.

As they got closer to their destination, Xin Xin became increasingly excited, and the smile on her lips became harder and harder to contain.

Just as they rounded another wall, a strange man landed in front of them.

Before Xin Xin could react, the man had already grabbed the two bodyguards and slammed their heads together.

The bodyguard was knocked unconscious by a violent impact after only half of the stun baton he had pulled out.

Xin Xin only had time to let out a short scream before the man covered her mouth and dragged her into the shadows.

As soon as Song Wenxian stopped the car, she heard screams coming from the empty building.

"Xin Xin!!!" He ignored Sang Xing's advice and rushed inside.

Just as Xin Que finished tying the two bodyguards up like dumplings, she heard hurried footsteps inside the building. She raised her hand and pressed the blade of her knife against Xin Xin's trembling neck.

Xin Xin trembled even more violently.

...

When Song Wenxian saw the woman being led out, he almost instinctively walked over.

"Let her go," Song Wenxian raised her hand to signal Xin Que to calm down, "The money you wanted is all here, and I didn't call the police."

Xin Que's gaze fell on Sang Xing, who was holding a box to the side.

Sang Xing slowly placed the heavy box on the ground, and then she and Song Wenxian stepped back.

Xin Que glanced at the box once and then looked away.

...

Luo Huayi could no longer understand which part of this world was real.

Is it a reconstruction of the image constructed from the moment when one is on the verge of death after falling from a tall building to the ground?

Or is it a space constantly distorted by the plots of tragic novels?

Or... all the things I personally experienced before I got involved in this tragic novel?

Luo Huayi stood in the Wuxiang Temple, which was surrounded by four red walls. It was the same courtyard, the same floor tiles, and she was still under the seemingly indifferent gaze of a certain statue.

The glaring midday sun pierced through the dense, rustling leaves, reflecting the dust particles dancing in the air and falling into this small space.

Cheng Zheng and Master Xuanqing stood opposite him, their lips moving as if they were introducing something to him.

Behind them stood a tall and majestic Bodhisattva statue atop a lotus pedestal...

The sound came from somewhere, perhaps the sound of a monk striking a bell, or perhaps the sound of some other instrument telling the time...

Everything suddenly dimmed.

Luo Huayi suddenly came to her senses.

In that instant, Cheng Zheng and Xuan Qing had vanished.

He and the Bodhisattva statue holding a jade vase stood face to face, one looking down and the other looking up, in the very center of the bustling street.

The clock on the distant building has a special effect, with the hour, minute, and second hands perfectly aligned with the number 12.

An endless night stretched across the city, while countless shop lights, in a riot of colors—warm and cool—gave the edges of the Buddha statue before him an eerie glow.

Luo Huayi felt as if she had fallen into an ice cave.

What has he gotten himself involved in now?

People were coming and going all around, their conversations and shouts filling the air.

But there was no one in sight.

Only empty, driverless vehicles sped past him and the Buddha statue; only empty shops and stalls, their lights lit up, but no one was there.

Luo Huayi turned around abruptly, about to take a step to try to escape, but was blocked by the tall statue of the God of Slaughter behind her.

The statue of the God of Slaughter, holding a magical weapon, had a ferocious face and glared angrily at Luo Huayi, standing even more terrifying in the darkness.

"How can someone without a soul, spirit, or life be considered human?" Xuan Yunzi's voice rang out from beside Luo Huayi, who immediately looked in the direction of the voice.

Xuan Yunzi, dressed in a Taoist robe, now had a mechanical air about him, and it was hard to see the kindness he once had on his face.

What did he mean by that?

Luo Huayi's mind raced. Soul and life—was he talking about himself?

Just as he was about to speak, another voice came from behind him.

"The cycle of six realms of reincarnation has no beginning and no end." Xuanqing and Xuanyunzi, with identical facial features and divine bodies, stood on his other side, their expressions indifferent. "We, the jailers, exist in the hell realm, imprisoning those who commit evil deeds in this world, stripping them of their joy and causing them to fall into the abyss of endless suffering."

"This is our duty."

Cold sweat trickled down Luo Huayi's forehead.

What are they talking about?!

What hell realm, what soul and life...

Unable to hold on any longer, Luo Huayi fled before they could get close enough to her.

The car was forced to stop by Luo Huayi's reckless act of crossing the road. Even though the car was empty, a series of curses rang out, accusing Luo Huayi of not being able to watch where she was going.

"What the hell is this?!" Luo Huayi could no longer care about anything else and rushed into the bustling, brightly lit shopping mall not far away, trying to find clues to leave.

Behind them, in the middle of the road, stood two statues, one of a Buddha and one of a deity, unmoving.
