Chapter 49
Qi Ying woke up in his arms.
She was still drowsy when she opened her eyes. Her little head rubbed against his neck, and her lips brushed against his chin, feeling soft and wet.
Ji Rang's body trembled as if he had received an electric shock. He asked her in a low voice: "Are you awake?"
She nodded and rubbed her eyes. Ji Rang smiled and bent over to put her down. Qi Ying finally woke up when she stood on the ground. She blinked and suddenly thought of something. She opened her hands and looked at them. There was nothing.
He looked at Ji Rang with aggrieved look.
Where is my candied haws?
Ji Rang laughed: "It fell off, buy it next time." He lowered his head and tied the scarf for her again: "Go home and have a good sleep."
Qi Ying nodded obediently.
When she got home, her uncle and the others were still asleep. She took a shower quietly and then climbed into bed to continue sleeping. Her uncle knew that she would be back in the early morning, so he did not call her and she slept until lunch.
After dinner, the family went to visit relatives. They were relatives from her aunt's side, whom Qi Ying didn't know. Yu Cheng didn't want her to feel uncomfortable, so he left her another two hundred yuan and asked her to make an appointment with her classmates to have a delicious meal in the afternoon.
Yu Zhuo was extremely envious. He hated visiting relatives, and especially hated those relatives asking him how many points he got in the final exam. Unfortunately, he had to go, so he followed his parents out of the house listlessly.
Qi Ying was the only one left at home. She first sent a message to Ji Rang to tell him that she was awake, but she didn't receive a reply, so he was probably still asleep. She then sent a message to Yue Li, asking her to go shopping in the afternoon.
Yue Li sent a crying emoticon: I’m visiting relatives in the countryside, let’s make an appointment when I come back!
It seemed that everyone was visiting relatives on the first day of the Lunar New Year. Qi Ying thought about it and simply packed her schoolbag and went to the library. Fortunately, it was a national public library and was open during this time. The library was extremely empty and she was basically the only one there.
Qi Ying spent the whole afternoon doing chemistry questions for the second semester of high school, and memorized the vocabulary for the first few units of English for the next semester. She left at around five o'clock, standing at the entrance of the library with her schoolbag on her back, checking the map, and preparing to find a good restaurant to eat something.
While checking the surrounding area on the map, a black Lincoln stopped in front of her. The window rolled down, letting out a gust of warm air with a faint forest scent.
Ji Weiyan greeted her with a gentle smile: "Little girl, do you still recognize me?"
Qi Ying had half of her face wrapped in a scarf. There was a hint of timidity in her watery eyes, and she nodded slightly.
Ji Weiyan saw that she was a little nervous, so he opened the car door and got out, saying softly, "I'm Ji Rang's father. I want to treat you to a meal, is that okay?"
Qi Ying tugged at the strap of her schoolbag, not knowing whether to agree or refuse.
She doesn't like to interact with people she doesn't know, and she knows not to get into someone else's car casually.
But this uncle is the general's father.
When she entered the palace in her previous life, the old general had already passed away due to illness. She had only heard from others how brave and skilled in fighting that highly respected general was. As the saying goes, a good father will have a good son, and his son was no less outstanding than he was in his youth.
Qi Ying pursed her lips and nodded under Ji Weiyan's patient and kind gaze.
Ji Weiyan smiled and opened the car door for her. "Get in the car. It's cold outside."
Qi Ying got into the car, took off her schoolbag and held it in her arms, feeling a little reserved. Ji Weiyan sat next to her and told the driver to drive before turning around and asking her, "Little girl, what's your name?"
Qi Ying took out her cell phone and typed on the memo: Uncle, my name is Qi Ying.
Ji Weiyan's face flashed with surprise, and he was stunned for a moment before asking: "You...can't you speak?"
Qi Ying nodded.
Ji Weiyan didn't know what he felt inside. He sighed silently and touched her head lovingly. "Good girl, it's okay." He said gently, "Yingying, what do you want to eat?"
Qi Ying typed: I can do anything.
Ji Weiyan thought about what children of this age like to eat, but found that he had no idea at all. Finally, he told the driver to go to the French restaurant he often went to.
The environment there is quiet and there are many flowers planted. The little girl should like it.
As the car drove onto the street, Ji Weiyan asked her a few questions about school, and Qi Yingdu typed her answers carefully. When he learned that she ranked ninth in the final exam, he smiled and asked, "Arang has made such great progress this semester. Did you help him?"
Qi Ying was a little shy and typed: He is smart and hardworking.
As the two were chatting, Ji Weiyan's phone rang. The car was quiet. After answering the phone, Qi Ying heard an anxious voice on the other end: "Mr. Ji, the wife fainted again!"
Ji Weiyan's face changed: "Has Doctor Chen been there?"
"I've called and they're on their way."
He said in a deep voice: "I know, I'll be back soon."
The driver also heard it, and when he hung up the phone, he asked, "Mr. Ji, are you going home instead?"
Ji Weiyan looked out the window and saw that the car had already driven onto the elevated road and could not get down for a while. He calmed himself down and asked Qi Ying, "Yingying, uncle has to go home soon. Would you like to sit at uncle's house for a while?"
Qi Ying was a little hesitant.
He said gently, "You can go and see where Valan grew up."
Qi Ying knew that he had to hurry home, and it was not convenient for him to send her home now, but he also couldn't leave her on the overpass, so she nodded.
The car drove back to Ji's house at full speed.
The Ji family lives in Palm Garden, a famous wealthy villa area in the suburbs. The villa has three floors. The car can drive directly into the private basement, and the elevator next to it leads directly to the living room.
Qi Ying held her schoolbag and kept her eyes down, not looking around.
Ji Weiyan asked the nanny to bring her a drink and said softly, "Yingying, just look around first. Arang's room is at the end of the corridor on the second floor. I'll be back soon."
She nodded obediently, Ji Weiyan smiled, and then hurried up to the third floor.
The nanny quickly brought her several kinds of drinks and cut some fruit. Qi Ying was a little unaccustomed to being in an unfamiliar environment, so she took a box of milk and climbed up the stairs to the second floor, where she found Ji Rang's room.
The door was closed, so she reached out, grasped the doorknob, turned it and opened it.
The large room was cleaned very cleanly and had all the necessary daily necessities, but it was still obvious that no one had lived in the room for a long time.
Qi Ying walked in slowly.
On the desk stood a row of junior high school tutorial books, a pen holder full of pens, and a thick stack of calligraphy practice books. The bookcase next to it was filled with must-read literary classics for teenagers, as well as various comic books and military magazines.
There was a large glass cabinet near the French window, filled with models of various guns and tanks. There was a trophy on the bookcase, and Qi Ying stood on tiptoe to take a look. It turned out to be the championship trophy of the National Youth Shooting Competition.
Next to the trophy is a photo of Ji Rang winning the award.
The boy in the photo looked very young, probably only twelve or thirteen years old. His face was tense, serious and earnest. He held a pistol in his hand, stood straight and upright, and focused on aiming straight ahead.
Even though he hasn't grown up yet, he's already handsome and handsome.
Ji Rang in the photo did not have the indifferent and aggressive look that he has now. His confident and awe-inspiring temperament attracted everyone's attention like the dazzling sun.
Qi Ying took out her phone and took a photo of the trophy and the photo frame. As soon as she finished taking the photo, several messages tagged her popped up in the WeChat group, and Qi Ying clicked on them.
It was the group called “I fight and smoke but I am a good student”. Qu Dazhuang tagged Ji Rang and asked him to go to No. 6 Middle School to play basketball together.
Ji Rang said: No, my hands are sore.
Qu Dazhuang asked: What happened? Did you work all night last night?
Ji Rang sent an emoticon with the word "get lost" in it.
Qu Dazhuang also tagged Qi Ying: If you want to date En, just say so! Don’t use the excuse of your fingers being sore to fool me!
Ji Rang ignored her and switched to replying to the message Qi Ying sent him at noon: Just woke up, have you eaten?
Qi Ying sat down on the bed, thought for a while, and told him the truth: Not yet, I just met your father outside the library.
Ji Rang’s message came back almost instantly: Where are you?
Qi Ying sent the photo she had just taken.
There was no reply from the other end for a long time.
Qi Ying waited for a while, put away her phone, and walked around the room again. More than ten minutes later, she received Ji Rang's reply: Stay in the room and don't run around. I'll pick you up.
She obediently replied "OK".
She didn't mess around with anything in the room, but just sat down at the desk and flipped through the yellowed copybook. From the crooked strokes to the smooth handwriting, one could almost imagine the young man sitting here holding a pen and practicing calligraphy.
It turns out that his handwriting is so beautiful.
He can also shoot and has won championships.
I have read so many literary classics.
She knew that he was awesome!
Not long after, there was a knock on the door behind her. Qi Ying turned around and saw Ji Weiyan standing at the door. He said with a gentle smile, "Yingying, uncle is done with his work, let's go."
She put the copybook away and followed him downstairs.
A doctor-like man was standing in the living room, instructing a nurse, "Observe her vital signs overnight and send the records to me tomorrow morning. Be careful not to let her emotions fluctuate during this period, as emotions have a great impact on palpitations."
The nurse nodded repeatedly. Seeing Ji Weiyan coming down, she asked him, "Boss Ji, are you leaving?" Ji Weiyan nodded. The nurse said, "Madam asked me to ask if you will be home for dinner tonight. She rarely has an appetite, so she just asked Aunt Zhang to go buy some groceries."
Ji Weiyan smiled and said, "Not tonight. I have an appointment with the kids. Let Madam eat by herself."
The nurse looked at Qi Ying who was standing next to him curiously. He wanted to ask something when the door behind him was suddenly kicked open with a bang.
The violent young man had cold eyes and took big, fast steps. Before anyone could react, he had walked straight to Qi Ying, grabbed her wrist and dragged her away.
The nurse reacted and shouted angrily: "Who are you? How dare you break into a private house!"
Ji Weiyan scolded her: "Shut up!" He quickly chased after her, "Arrang!"
Ji Rang didn't want to stay in this place for even a second, but he finally stopped, glanced at the girl next to him who seemed a little at a loss, and turned around.
Qi Ying was watching from the side. He tried his best to keep his tone calm, but he still couldn't hide the rage in his eyes. He stared at Ji Weiyan and said word by word: "Please get out of my sight from now on and don't appear in front of her again."
Ji Weiyan was so angry at his ruthless words that his face darkened: "What nonsense are you talking about!" He walked a few steps to Ji Rang, took a few deep breaths and calmed his tone: "I just want to invite Yingying to dinner. She helped you a lot with your studies. I am very grateful to her."
Ji Rang looked at him sarcastically: "My business has nothing to do with you."
Ji Weiyan didn't want to confront him: "It's not easy to come home, stay for dinner, it happens to be Chinese New Year today, what do you want to eat, I'll ask Auntie to cook it."
The boy looked at him as if he were an enemy: "If I eat in this place, I will be so sick that I will vomit." He suddenly glanced at the doctor and the nurse standing next to him, and for some reason, he deliberately smiled maliciously: "Is that woman dead?"
At that moment, Ji Weiyan felt as if he had never really known his only son.
He only hoped that he could grow up well, and didn't ask him to win honor for anyone, as long as he had good behavior. But he was willing to degenerate. He could have regarded the actions of those bad boys as rebellion, but now the boy's face showed the viciousness of a snake spitting out its tongue, which chilled his heart.
He raised his hand and slapped him, as if to wake him up.
With a slap, Ji Rang was slapped hard in the face.
The whole room was filled with Ji Weiyan's roar: "Look at what you look like now!"
Everyone was stunned.
I didn't expect that Ji Weiyan, who has always been gentle, would get so angry.
Ji Weiyan wanted to say something when Qi Ying, who had been standing obediently beside him, suddenly rushed in front of Ji Rang.
She opened her arms and protected the boy behind her. Like an angry little leopard, she glared at the man opposite her, as if she would pounce on him and bite him if he attacked her again.
She was thin and weak, and her slender back was still trembling slightly.
But she tried to straighten her body and stand on tiptoe, trying to block the boy completely.
Ji Rang suddenly remembered many years ago.
The same place, the same scene, Ji Weiyan slapped him in front of everyone in the Ji family.
At that time, no one stood on his side.
He gave them a cold look, turned around and walked out without saying a word, and never came back.
Now, for the sake of the girl in front of him, he once again stepped into this place that he hated and loathed, and was slapped again, but he did not feel the desperate anger like last time.
He lowered his eyes, reached out and took the girl's delicate wrist, and said softly: "Yingying, let's go."
Qi Ying turned around.
Soft eyes reddened.
Looking at the gentle smile on the boy's face, he nodded obediently.
He led her out the door.
There was a thin winter sun outside.
He heard a faint sob and turned his head to see that the little girl was crying.
It was as if she was the one being beaten.
Ji Rang stopped walking, squatted down in front of her, and comforted her with a smile: "Little fool, why are you crying? Weren't you very fierce just now?"
Tears streamed down her face. She stretched out her soft fingers and carefully touched his red and swollen right cheek, as if asking him: Does it hurt?
He rubbed his face against her warm fingertips: "It doesn't hurt, don't cry."
Qi Ying pursed her lips to hold back her tears.
She leaned over, pursed her lips, and blew his breath gently.
