Chapter 15 Borrowing a Pot

As Chen Qingqing walked, she learned about information about this era.

The people of the Great Ning Dynasty were open-minded and did not object to women showing their faces in public.

In short, the most capable should be in charge.

She was very satisfied. In the future, she could open a pharmacy and do business. She was sure she could live a carefree and unrestrained life in this era.

Before I knew it, I had arrived at the village head's house.

At this moment, Li, the village head's wife, was standing in the courtyard chatting with Wu Baoan, who was plucking feathers from an old hen.

"Master, has the Chen family really separated Zhan Shan's family and severed all ties with them?"

"Of course! How could this be fake? I wrote the letter severing ties with him."

"Tsk tsk tsk, this old lady Chen is too biased. Zhanshan has caused their family a lot of trouble over the years, but in the end they got nothing."

Li looked indignant.

“You said Chen Zhancai has taken the imperial examination for more than ten years and has not even passed the lowest level. In my opinion, he is simply not cut out for studying. If the Chen family does not cut its losses in time, they will definitely have a hard time in the future.”

"Alright, whether he passes the imperial examination or not is none of our business. Stop worrying about it."

"I'm just standing up for Zhan Shan."

Wu Baoan sighed softly, "In my opinion, it's better to separate them. Zhan Shan is hardworking and not afraid of hardship, so he won't really starve to death. If they weren't separated, Qing Yatou and Han Xiaozi would have been sold by Old Lady Chen sooner or later."

"You're right."

After Li finished speaking, she looked up and saw Chen Qingqing walk in. She quickly greeted her with a smile.

"Qing'er is here. Come in and sit down."

Wu Baoan quickly put down the old hen he was holding, stood up and asked, "Qing girl, is everything in the house tidy up?"

Chen Qingqing chuckled softly, "My parents are getting things sorted out, and it's almost done."

"That's good. Just say what's on your mind, don't be so polite with your uncle."

Hearing him say this, Chen Qingqing secretly praised Wu Baoan for being a sensible person who knew that she must have come for a reason. It was indeed easy to do things with a smart person.

She scratched her head, a little embarrassed, "Uncle Village Head, we don't have any pots and pans yet, so we can't cook dinner tonight."

Without a second thought, Wu Baoan said, "It's alright, that's easy. I happen to have a brand new pot at home. You can take it back and use it for now. There's no rush to return it."

"Thank you, Uncle Village Head. Then I won't be polite."

Wu Baoan then instructed Li Shi, who was standing to the side, "Mother of the child, quickly bring a few more sets of bowls and chopsticks for Qingya."

"Okay, I'll go right away."

Li took out a large bowl for serving vegetables, as well as five sets of bowls and chopsticks. "Qing'er, see if you need anything else, and your aunt will get it for you."

Chen Qingqing didn't stand on ceremony anymore, "Auntie, could you give me some more seasoning?"

“Okay, you wait here.” Li turned around and took out half a bag of millet and various seasonings from the house. To her surprise, there was also a small bowl of lard. “Girl, take this millet back and eat it first. Otherwise, your body won’t be able to handle just eating rice bran.”

"Thank you, Auntie. I'll pay you back for the rice when things get better for my family."

"What do you mean 'take back'? Since your aunt gave it to you, she had no intention of asking for it back."

"Thank you so much, Auntie."

"Why are you being so polite to me, kid?"

Her own grandparents didn't treat them like human beings, but outsiders gave her boundless warmth. Chen Qingqing knew the situation her family was in.

That little bit of rice bran really wouldn't last three to five days, but with this millet, it could last at least ten or eight days.

She took the millet, her eyes slightly moist. "Auntie, I'll head back now. You all keep busy."

"Okay, go back now. Come visit your auntie's house often when you have time."

"Okay, Auntie, please wait a moment." Chen Qingqing said and turned to leave.

Watching Chen Qingqing leave the courtyard, Madam Li shook her head and sighed, "What a fine child, at such a young age, how could Old Madam Chen be so heartless as to marry her off to Butcher Li? How immoral!"

Wu Baoan sneered, "In my opinion, the Chen family will regret this sooner or later."

"What do you mean?"

"I feel that this young girl has a lot of tenacity and will definitely amount to something in the future. Let's wait and see!"

Li nodded, "I hope so. It's just a pity for this child. I don't know how much more suffering he will have to endure these days."

......

When Chen Qingqing returned home, she found that the thatched house had been cleaned inside and out.

The parents made a simple partition in the house with wood, and used a few tree stumps as supports to put a few planks on to build two beds. They put some straw underneath and covered them with old cotton quilts.

Although the conditions were simple, at least they had a place to stay.

Looking at the clean and tidy thatched house, she couldn't help but smile.

Isn't this the idyllic rural life I've always longed for? I never thought it would actually come true.

However, this era is really too impoverished. I must work hard to earn money, leave this cowshed as soon as possible, and lead my parents to a prosperous life.

The sun is setting.

Chen Zhanshan built a stove out of stones in the yard, and boiled water in a pot.

Chen Qingqing praised without reservation, "Dad, you're really amazing! Look how well you built this stove."

Chen Zhanshan looked at him with doting eyes, "You little rascal, when did you become so good at talking?"

“My daughter has always been like this, but nobody really cares,” Chen Qingqing said coquettishly.

Lin frowned slightly. No matter what her child did or how well he did, his parents-in-law never respected him. They would beat and scold them, and were never satisfied.

The third wife's child doesn't do anything, and the in-laws' eyes are always smiling when they see him.

How ironic, there is no harm without comparison.

Although things are tough now, being in a good mood and having the whole family happy is more important than anything else.

Madam Lin beckoned to Chen Qingqing, "Qing'er, come here, let me clean your wound."
