Chapter 287 I Can't Understand

"What's the point of telling you this? I always tell you to be careful and not to do just any kind of business. Now look what you've done. You've stirred up a hornet's nest. If they come knocking on our door, we'll both lose our heads."

"It's not that serious, is it? I've investigated everything thoroughly and there's absolutely no way there could be any oversight."

The fat steward snorted coldly, "It's not that serious. Those two could kill us in the blink of an eye. What are you still gloating about? Get those two old bastards out of here right now."

"Alright, I'll let them go right away."

Granny Sun knew she had made a huge mistake and offended someone she shouldn't have.

Turning to look at the stunned Mr. and Mrs. Chen, he gritted his teeth and said fiercely,

"You two old geezers, what exactly happened with that kid? If you don't tell the truth, I'll skin you alive!"

"You, you, you're asking me? I, we don't know either!" Old Mrs. Chen shook her head in astonishment.

Old Chen looked completely bewildered and waved his hands vigorously, "You don't know what happened, what could we old folks know? Are you just going to let them go like this?"

Upon hearing this, Granny Sun was so angry that she jumped up and down on the spot. "What do you want if you don't let us leave? Do you want to chop off our heads before you leave? You are obviously no good people. You brought a child of unknown origin to cause trouble. We have been ruined by you two inhuman old bastards. You must bear the responsibility for today's losses."

Grandma Chen was terrified and quickly explained, "Grandma Sun, that child is indeed my grandson. If I'm lying, may I be struck by lightning! You can't blame us for your losses!"

“That’s right, everything has to be reasonable. We didn’t do anything. You were the ones who released the children. It has nothing to do with us old folks.” Old Chen quickly chimed in.

Granny Sun was so angry that she gritted her teeth. "Manager Qian, you see, this really has nothing to do with me. There must have been a mistake somewhere else. We've been targeted. Today's incident was just an accident."

The fat steward could tell that the old man and his wife were dressed in shabby clothes and couldn't possibly know any important people. It was probably just a coincidence. Perhaps some powerful figure was traveling incognito in Anyang and he just happened to be unlucky enough to be targeted.

He waved his hand, "Alright, that's enough for today. Don't cause any more trouble. If those two come back and attack us, we're all doomed. Make them get lost and close down!"

"Okay, okay, I understand." Granny Sun had wanted to squeeze some money out of the old couple, but since the person in charge had spoken, she had no choice but to listen. However, she was furious and kicked each of them. "Get out of here! If I see you two old hags again, I'll skin you alive!"

"Alright, alright, we'll leave right now!" Old Mrs. Chen felt like she had been granted a pardon. She immediately grabbed Old Mr. Chen and hurriedly headed outside, afraid of being held hostage.

Chen Zhancai was craning his neck and looking out from a corner when he saw Old Man Chen and his wife stumbling out of the brokerage. He hurriedly went to meet them.

"Father, Mother, are you alright?"

"Oh my son, what brings you here? I was so scared just now, I almost died of fright!" Old Mrs. Chen kept patting her chest.

Old Chen was also panting heavily. "Son, you don't know, your mother and I were almost scammed just now."

Chen Zhancai ignored them and hurriedly asked Old Lady Chen, "Mother, what exactly happened just now? Who were those two people? The brokerage manager was beaten up and didn't dare to say a word, but he's bowing and scraping to that brat like a grandson?"

"How would I know what's going on? I'm still completely confused!"

"This is strange. That brat is too amazing." Chen Zhancai was completely puzzled.

Old Chen snorted coldly, "What does this have to do with that brat? If you ask me, those two must be officials, otherwise the brokers wouldn't be so scared like cowards."

Grandma Chen shook her head in disagreement, "What you said is possible, but I just don't understand why they released those dozen or so children? Isn't that bullying them?"

"Old woman, how could someone as smart as you not understand this? It must be that some of those children were from noble families, and they got angry and released them all!"

"You're right, we're really unlucky. We rushed here early or late, only to run into this mess. If we had known it would be like this, we would have come back in a couple of days." Old Mrs. Chen pounded her head in frustration.

Chen Zhancai agreed, and stamped his foot in anger, "These people are good for nothing but ruining things. They're deliberately trying to ruin my career! I'm so angry!"

"Good son, don't worry. It will break your mother's heart if you get sick from worrying. As the saying goes, there's always a way out. I'll think of a way for you. Don't rush, don't rush!" Old Mrs. Chen was afraid that something might happen to her precious son, so she kept comforting him.

Chen Zhancai was distraught and didn't know how to face his brother and sister-in-law when he got home. He shook his head helplessly.

"Mother, you make it sound so easy, but how can I not be anxious? Things are a complete mess now. We haven't made any money, and we've gotten ourselves into trouble. You'd better think about how to explain this to my second brother and sister-in-law when we get back!"

“Oh, my good son, what is there for your mother to explain to them? It’s not illegal for me to sell my own grandson. I’m not afraid of what they say. At worst, people will talk behind my back. You don’t need to worry about these things. I will take responsibility for my own actions. It has nothing to do with you. Don’t worry about it. They won’t dare to do anything to me.”

"Yes, Mother, I'm relieved to hear you say that."

Chen Zhancai felt a weight lifted from his heart, but then, remembering the money he had almost received, he couldn't help but shake his head and sigh.

"Now that I have no money, how can I take the imperial examination? How can I let my parents live a life of luxury with me in the future? How can they enjoy a comfortable life with me?"

Grandma Chen was at a loss, but she still smiled and comforted her.

“My son, I know you are filial, but now that things have come to this, it’s definitely impossible to do anything to Erbao again. But don’t worry, we can’t let ourselves die from holding our pee. We’ll find a way. Let’s go home and discuss it further.”

Hearing her say that, Old Man Chen frowned and shook his head, muttering to himself, "Stop with this nonsense, let's think about what to do when we get home!"

Old Mrs. Chen glanced at him, and surprisingly did not refute him.

Thinking of her second son's murderous gaze, she felt a chill run down her spine. Yes, what should she say when she got home?

Forget it, I don't want to think about it anymore. As the saying goes, what's meant to be will be, and you can't escape it. You'll have to face it sooner or later.

Let's just be like a dead pig that's not afraid of boiling water, whatever happens, happens!

With that thought in mind, they started walking towards home...
