“Mom, my dad is right. We should give them the grain; we don’t need it,” Da Bao said indignantly.
Knowing what kind of person Old Madam Chen was, Mrs. Sun decided not to argue with her anymore. She turned around and carried her packed luggage out.
Taking this opportunity, Da Bao went back into the house to pack his things, secretly relieved that he had deposited all the money he had earned in the past few months into the bank. If he had hidden it in the jar, it would have been difficult to take it out.
Upon arriving in the courtyard, just as he was about to go to the kitchen with Mrs. Sun to tidy up the pots and pans, Old Mrs. Chen stopped him again.
"Second son's wife, what are you doing?"
Sun patiently said, "We can do without the house, but we should have a share of the cooking utensils!"
"What a load of rubbish! I bought all the furniture in this house. What have you contributed since you married into the family? And you still have the nerve to take anything? Don't even think about it!"
"Fine, fine, even if I haven't bought anything, Zhanliang has worked so hard all these years, shouldn't we have a share of the things in the house? Why can't you let me touch this or take that?"
"I'm not giving it to you, what can you do about it!" Old Mrs. Chen sneered, looking like she was saying, "I'm not giving it to you, go ahead and hit me if you dare."
Seeing this, Da Bao was so angry that his eyes were blazing. "Don't go too far. Leave yourself some room to maneuver."
"I'm not leaving myself any room for maneuver. My third son is a scholar, and he'll pass the imperial examination next autumn. Then I can finally enjoy the good life."
But you lot shouldn't think that just because I kicked the first wife out, you're living a good life and want to follow suit.
Let me tell you, not everyone can have such good luck. Don't regret it later when you're starving and come begging to me. If that happens, even if you starve to death, I won't take care of you.
Seeing that Old Mrs. Chen was being so unreasonable, Wu Baoan couldn't stand it anymore. "Sister-in-law, this is where you're wrong. How could you stop Zhan Liang's family from taking some cooking utensils? By doing this, you're just making things difficult for Zhan Liang and his family!"
Old Mrs. Chen curled her lip, looking indifferent. "So what if I'm upset with him? Anyway, the family division document didn't specify that they should get pots and pans, so I'm in the right no matter where I go to complain."
“Auntie, if you say it like that, I’ll have to rewrite the document. How can you do things like this?”
“Wu Baoan, what do you mean? You’re back to your seat after you’ve finished taking a dump. Is this how a village head should act? Let me tell you, Wu Baoan, if it’s not written in the family division document, they don’t get anything.”
As she spoke, Old Mrs. Chen gave him a disgruntled look and said, "Alright, this is none of your business. Go do what you're supposed to do and stop meddling here."
Wu Baoan was furious that Old Lady Chen was so unreasonable. He blamed himself for his carelessness in not writing it clearly.
They might divide the family property among others, but even fathers and sons, brothers, can fight tooth and nail. Parents, fearing their children will go hungry, will give them more than they should.
How could they be so cruel as to not even provide a bowl or chopsticks?
He angrily flicked his sleeve, "Auntie, you're such a disappointment."
Old Mrs. Chen scoffed, "I'm disappointed. I raised such an unfilial child. He even argued with his own parents about separating the family over a child. This is truly disobedience and unfilial piety."
Chen Zhanliang now understood that in his parents' eyes, he was just a laborer and had no use at all.
He didn't want to get entangled with the unreasonable Old Lady Chen, so he waved his hand at Madam Sun.
“Cuiqin, let’s go. We can still live our lives without these things.”
“You’re right, sir. I don’t care about these junks!” Mrs. Sun picked up her things and led Erbao out of the yard.
Watching them turn and leave, Old Chen frowned deeply, his teeth chattering with anxiety.
"Old woman, you're so confused! Why did you divide the family property again? How are we going to live like this?!"
Old Mrs. Chen glared at him angrily and started cursing.
"Stop making that long face in front of me, how can you blame me for this?"
It was that damned family member who caused the breakup. What were you doing back then? Why didn't you say anything?
"How are we supposed to live now? How are we supposed to live? You can't live without that unfilial son, can you?"
"Look at you, I was just saying it casually, why are you scolding me again? I just think that the second brother and the others are scoundrels, that they made you angry."
"You deserve to be scolded! All you do is offer hindsight advice. What were you doing back then? That bastard was craning his neck and glaring at you, making a fuss about splitting up the family business. You should have just picked up a stick and beaten him. I don't believe he would dare to cause any trouble."
But you, you're like a cowardly turtle, not daring to utter a sound. They're gone, and now you're all high and mighty. If you want to avenge me, go find them now with a stick and settle the score. I'll go to jail with you if you kill them. Do you dare?"
"Alright, old woman, calm down. Don't get so worked up. How could I bear to let you go to jail with me?" Old Chen scratched his head awkwardly, gave an unnatural smile, and dared not say another word.
Seeing his spineless appearance, Old Mrs. Chen got angry. "Look at you, you spineless coward. I must have been blind to marry such a useless piece of trash. Get out of here. Just looking at you makes me angry."
"What a fucking idiot! He takes his anger out on me. What kind of jerk is he?" Old Chen muttered, taking two steps back and ignoring her.
When Chen Zhancai saw the old couple arguing, he quickly went to Chen's mother and advised, "Mother, what are you doing? The family property has already been divided. Why are you still so angry? If you get sick from getting angry, your son will worry."
"Oh dear, my good son, I'm not angry, I'm just worried!" Old Mrs. Chen frowned and shook her head. "The family property has been divided, but who will do all the housework from now on?"
