In her eagerness to save him, Ru Hua threw one end of the rope to Chen Zhancai.
"Husband, grab the rope, tie it around your waist, and we'll pull you up."
Chen Zhancai painstakingly tied the rope, "Okay, hurry up and pull me up."
Wu Baoan was struggling to breathe from the fumes, but he still helped pull the rope.
"One, two, three, pull hard!" Ru Hua shouted the slogan loudly, not minding the stench at all.
Chen Zhancai was pulled up little by little.
Just as he was about to be completely pulled out, the feces and urine on Chen Zhancai's body became too sticky, and the rope slipped off him.
With a 'whoosh,' he fell in again, splashing a shower of excrement and urine into the cesspool.
Old Mrs. Chen, who was at the front, shouted, "Oh my, this is disgusting! Old man, hurry, hurry, get me some water!"
"Alright, alright, you wait here." Old Chen didn't dare to delay, turned around and quickly ran back into the house to fetch a ladle of clean water. "Old woman, where did you get poop on you? Let me wash it off for you."
"Quick, quick, give it to me!" Old Mrs. Chen snatched it and kept rinsing her mouth.
Old Chen was secretly delighted to see this. Serves him right! Serves him right!
Serves you right for swearing! You're eating shit now!
After finishing the ladle of water, Old Mrs. Chen finally felt much better in her mouth, and only then did she remember her son.
"Zhancai, how are you? Are you alright?"
Chen Zhancai was so dizzy from the fall that he burst into tears, crying out, "Mother, are you all right? You're trying to kill your son!"
“Oh, my good son, you can’t blame your mother, you can only blame yourself for not tying the rope tightly enough.”
"Alright, stop talking and just throw the rope down. I'm about to be suffocated by the stench."
This time, Chen Zhancai dared not be careless. He wrapped the rope around his body several times and fastened it with several knots.
Old Mrs. Chen had been disgusted just now, but having learned her lesson, she winked at Old Mr. Chen behind her, "Come forward."
"No need, I'm fine here, I can really focus on my work."
"Just come when I tell you to. There's no need for so much nonsense."
"Fine, fine, I'll go to the front." Although Old Chen was somewhat unwilling, he couldn't argue with the elders and had no choice but to change positions.
The group pulled again and finally managed to drag Chen Zhancai out of the cesspool, which was about ten feet deep.
Chen Zhancai collapsed to the ground, panting heavily.
By the light of the oil lamp, Chen Zhancai's appearance was simply unbearable to look at.
It was yellowish from head to toe and emitted a suffocating stench.
Several people involuntarily covered their mouths and noses and took several steps back.
By this time, the people who had gone to put out the fire had extinguished it and were gathering around.
Seeing this, everyone felt nauseous and wanted to vomit, frowning in disgust.
"Oh dear, the scholar is really stupid. He fell into the latrine while taking a dump."
"So smelly! So much shit! This time, the scholar has truly become the legendary shit man!"
"Hahaha... The scholar fell into the latrine, what a ridiculous joke!"
"This is it, I'm doomed. Can someone who fell into the latrine still be hired? Even the scholar probably wouldn't want me anymore!"
"Hahaha...you bet! It stinks terribly, you'd better wash it off!"
"You make it sound so simple. You can wash off the feces and urine on your body with water, but can you clean the feces and urine in your mouth?"
"Ugh, ugh~~ Please stop talking, it makes me sick just listening to it."
Hearing the villagers' chatter, Wu Baoan suppressed a smile, waved his hand to signal them to be quiet, and changed the subject, "Why are you all here? Has the fire been put out?"
"It was just a small pile of straw that caught fire, and a few basins of water were enough to put it out."
"Alright, all put out." Wu Baoan said, frowning as he glanced at Chen Zhancai. "Zhancai, how could you be so careless? How could you fall into the latrine?"
"Yes, son, what did you do?" Old Mrs. Chen frowned and grinned. She couldn't understand how someone so big could fall into the latrine. She was so stupid.
Chen Zhancai frowned and kept his eyes tightly closed.
He was a little confused, and when he realized he was alright, he cried, feeling wronged.
Tears mixed with excrement flowed into his mouth, and he quickly spat several times.
He was about to raise his hand to wipe it when he realized his hands were completely covered in something. He shook the filth off his hands forcefully.
"Don't say anything else, just get me some water to wash up."
"Alright, alright, don't move around too much, or you'll make a mess everywhere." Old Mrs. Chen said, quickly telling Ruhua to fetch water.
Chen Zhancai squinted and noticed that the area was surrounded by villagers watching the spectacle. He was so ashamed that he wanted to bury his head in his crotch.
Unable to contain his anger, he snapped at Old Man Chen and his wife, "You two are so foolish! Who told you to bring these people here? Make them leave right now!"
Seeing her son's face covered in filth, Old Mrs. Chen really wanted to go and wipe it clean for him, but the smell was nauseating, so she had to stand far away.
“Son, these aren’t people your mother called; they came on their own.”
"Yes, Zhancai, I don't know what happened, but the straw stack behind our house caught fire, and the village head and the others came to help put it out," Old Man Chen explained.
Upon hearing this, Chen Zhancai was so angry that he vomited. It was truly a case of "when it rains, it pours," and all sorts of bad luck seemed to be piling up at once!
"Alright, that's all, let them go quickly."
"Alright, alright, son, don't be angry. Mother will make them leave." Knowing how shameful this was, Old Mrs. Chen quickly looked at Wu Baoan and said, "Village head, thank you for coming to help put out the fire. My house is fine now. You can go back to sleep now."
"Don't you need us to help you get some water or something?"
"No need, no need, just please don't tell anyone about this."
"Don't worry, Auntie. These things are easy to talk about but hard to hear. Nobody will gossip about them."
Wu Baoan couldn't be bothered with such things; a slight mishap could leave him unable to eat for days. He waved his hand at the villagers watching.
"Alright, alright, that's all for now. Go back to sleep, we still have work to do tomorrow!"
"Village head, aren't we going to help the scholar wash off his excrement?"
"Yeah, he's covered in poop, he needs a good wash. Or should we watch him for a bit longer? Maybe we can help him get some water or something?"
The villagers joked about it, but they felt relieved inside.
He deserved it!
He was so smug about passing the mediocre imperial examination that he was practically throwing his weight around.
How could he be so heartless as to sell his own nephew to a brokerage firm? This kind of scoundrel deserves to be drowned!
