She wanted to explain, but when she opened her mouth, she couldn't say a word.
Just then, Old Man Chen came walking over from a distance, carrying a bamboo basket.
He left home early in the morning, not to dig for wild vegetables in the mountains, but to find a field far from home to steal some unripe corn, so he could roast it for his wife.
He saw a large group of people gathered at the village entrance from afar. Worried about being discovered, he picked some weeds by the roadside and put them on his bamboo basket as he walked.
Only after confirming that everything was in order did they enter the village.
When he saw Chen Zhancai standing in the crowd, he assumed it was his son returning home after passing the imperial examination, and that these people were fawning over and flattering him.
He didn't have time to ask any further questions. He casually tossed the bamboo basket aside, hurriedly pushed through the crowd, and, with tears in his eyes, excitedly grabbed Chen Zhancai's arm.
"My son, you're finally back. I've been waiting for you for so long. Our hard times are finally over."
"Dad, why are you here too? Let's talk this out, don't cry." Chen Zhancai was so anxious that he kept stamping his feet. What kind of trouble was this? Just when one person calmed down, another one came to cause trouble.
Old Chen smiled and wiped away his tears. "You silly child, you make it sound like your father can't come. I'm not crying, I'm crying tears of joy! I'm so happy!"
"Happy my ass!" Old Mrs. Chen didn't want to embarrass herself any longer, so she gritted her teeth and cursed, "Get out of here and stop making a fool of yourself."
"Old woman, what are you doing?" Old Chen was stunned by the scolding, and his temper flared up instantly. "What did I do to you? You just start yelling at me. You can be happy, but can't I have some fun too?"
"Screw your laughter! Get back here right now!"
