Chapter 448 Time Will Tell

As soon as Chen Zhancai stepped out of the courtyard, he saw Chen Zhanshan's family get into a carriage and drive away. He spat angrily on the ground.

"Pah! Shameless bastards, you even got on a carriage! I'll send you tumbling down a ditch in a minute!"

Seeing that he had no scholarly air about him, Ruhua frowned. "Husband, my elder brother's family is very nice. Why do you have such a big problem with them?"

"What a load of rubbish! They're a bunch of heartless ingrates. We didn't care when we were poor, but now that they're rolling in money, they don't even offer to help us out. How can I not have a problem with them?"

"It doesn't seem like they can be blamed!" Ru Hua said casually. She had heard about the old house and the eldest son's family these days, and she felt that her mother-in-law was a terrible person. If it weren't for Chen Zhancai's sake, she would have stopped taking care of the old couple a long time ago.

When Chen Zhancai heard her say that, he glared at her and said, "What do you know? Stay away from those gossipy old women."

"Okay, I understand." Ru Hua nodded in agreement, then changed the subject, "Husband, are we really not coming back?"

"Why come back? To listen to that old couple's endless rambling?"

"So where are we going to stay?"

"We'll go find Liu Fengjiao and ask her for some money, then we'll find a place to rent a house."

Will our sister give us money?

Ru Hua now seems to be regretting it. "As the saying goes, 'Only in the cold of winter can one truly know the strength of a pine tree; only time reveals a person's true character.'"

When I first started dating Chen Zhancai, I thought he was kind, considerate, and responsible.

But ever since she married him, she has discovered that he is treacherous, selfish, and lacks any ambition.

If I could do it all over again, I would never choose to marry him. I would rather be a cook at Chunfeng Tower.

She'll follow him wherever he goes, whether he's a chicken or a dog!

Chen Zhancai was getting impatient and glared at her fiercely. "You talk too much. Come with me."

Ru Hua didn't want to ask any more questions and kept her head down as she walked forward.

Soon, the two arrived at Qingshui Town.

Chen Zhancai spent the only four coins he had on him to buy two large sesame cakes. He gave one to Ruhua and ate it as he walked towards Wang Qizhang's house.

He knew that as long as he found his son, he could find Liu Fengjiao.

Before long, they arrived at the Wang family's door.

Chen Zhancai puffed out his chest. Although Wang Qizhang was a nobody in Qingshui Town, he, Chen Zhancai, was a scholar certified by the imperial court. He could not afford to lose face in front of a minor official.

He gestured towards Ruhua with his lip, "Go, knock on the door, and say that the scholar requests an audience."

Ru Hua stepped forward and gently knocked on the door knocker twice. There was no response. She then knocked harder twice more, and cautiously called out.

"Is anyone home? Open the door quickly."

I knocked a few more times, but there was still no response.

Chen Zhancai was getting impatient. "Knock harder and shout louder."

Ru Hua increased her strength, pounding on the door while shouting, "Is anyone there? Open the door quickly, the scholar requests an audience."

After shouting dozens of times, a child's cursing voice finally came from the courtyard: "Coming, coming! What kind of bullshit master are you yelling about? If you break the gate, I'll unleash the dogs to bite you to death!"

Upon hearing this, Chen Zhancai immediately flew into a rage. How dare a lowly servant, abusing his power, utter such arrogant words and insults against the scholar!

We'll slap him twice first, as a way of giving a lowly official like Wang Qizhang a warning.

At that moment, the door slowly opened, and half a head peeked out. Seeing the gaunt, unrecognizable woman standing outside, she didn't recognize her at first and immediately began to curse.

"You stinking beggar, don't you even open your dog eyes and see where you are? How dare you come here to beg for food? Get out of here right now, or I'll smash your head in if you dare to hit me again."

After saying that, he closed the door.

Before Ru Hua could even understand what was going on, she was stunned into silence by the scolding.

Upon hearing these words, Chen Zhancai's anger flared up instantly.

This snobbish brat has mistaken the scholar's wife for a beggar. If I don't beat this scoundrel to his knees and call him ancestor today, Chen Zhancai will immediately change his name and surname.

Thinking of this, he strode forward, showing no trace of scholarly refinement, and began kicking and shoving the door while hurling profanities.

"You motherless bastard, open your dog eyes and see who I am. If you know what's good for you, come out here right now, kowtow and apologize to me, or you'll regret it."

The boy inside wasn't going to back down either, and he started cursing, "You're the one who was born of a mother but raised without one! Your whole family are animals! Who do you think you are, you stinking beggar, daring to make your master kneel and kowtow? Get as far away as you can, or I'll unleash the dogs to bite you to death, you shameless beggar!"

"You little bastard, you dare to curse me!" Chen Zhancai was so angry that he jumped up and down on the spot. "I'll ask you one more time, are you going to open the door or not?"

"Get the hell out of here!"

"Fine, you just wait." Chen Zhancai was so angry that he lost his mind and grabbed a stone from the ground to smash the door.

Ru Hua recovered from her shock and stopped Chen Zhancai, saying, "Husband, calm down, don't do anything rash."

"Ruhua, don't stop me. Today I'm going to teach this little bastard a lesson."

"Alright, husband, calm down. I just glanced at that child and it looks like Jiye."

"Impossible." Chen Zhancai denied it outright. "My son Jiye has always been well-mannered and knowledgeable. How could he possibly be so foul-mouthed and utterly despicable? You must have seen it wrong."

Ru Hua quickly shook her head and said seriously, "No, there's absolutely no mistake, it should be Ji Ye. If you don't believe me, try calling his name."

Upon hearing this, Chen Zhancai's heart skipped a beat. Ru Hua should be a good person, so how did Ji Ye become like this?

This kid is just a bully who uses his master's power and swears all the time. He's not a child anymore, he's a complete thug!

He threw the stone in his hand on the ground, steadied himself, and shouted inside, "Jiye, open the door quickly, it's your father!"

Ru Hua was right; the boy in the courtyard was Chen Jiye.

When Chen Jiye heard someone call his name outside the door, he was startled and quickly opened the door a crack. His eyes lit up.

"Father, it really is you! What brings you here?"

Chen Zhancai was furious. He hadn't expected it to really be his son. He pointed at Chen Jiye and said, "You little brat, who were you cursing just now?"

"Father, don't be angry. How was I supposed to know it was you?"

"You have to ask others first, you can't just start cursing!"

"Why should I ask? I just saw how dark and thin she was, I thought she was begging for food!" Chen Jiye said, glancing at Ruhua, "Dad, who is she?"

Chen Zhancai rolled his eyes. "Who do you think she is? You haven't seen her for months, how come you don't even recognize your own mother?"
