Chapter 3 The Old House

Xu Qingqing followed her father to the Xu family's old house, where Grandpa Xu and Grandma Xu were.

After Xu's father married Bai Xiaolian, he moved out of the Xu family home and into another house. Although they lived separately, Xu's father often took her to the old house.

The old house is located in the city center. It is a four-courtyard house with only the elderly couple living there. Why was this house not expropriated? Just think about it: Xu's family of dozens of people, except for the youngest father, the great-grandfather's family, the second great-grandfather's family, and even the eldest uncle, second uncle, and eldest aunt all sacrificed their lives on the battlefield.

The Xu family sold off almost all of their publicly known assets, except for their house, to support China in driving out the invaders.

Even so, some people are still envious of the Xu family's old house. In fact, after the original owner of the house died in the novel, the Xu family's old house fell into Lin Meijiao's hands.

Xu Qingqing arrived at the main room in the front yard, where Grandpa Xu and Grandma Xu were waiting.

Xu Qingqing stepped forward and hugged Grandma Xu's arm, smiling brightly: "Grandma, what delicious food did you make today?"

Grandma Xu patted Xu Qingqing's hand with loving eyes and joked, "Then you're going to be disappointed today. I really didn't make your favorite dishes."

Xu Qingqing refused, gently shaking her grandmother's arm and pouting, her adorable little face amusing everyone else.

"Alright, alright, old woman, look at that girl's pouting lips, they could practically hold a bottle of soy sauce on them," Grandpa Jiang joked from the head seat.

"Grandpa, what are you saying?!" Xu Qingqing pretended to be angry, let go of Grandma Xu's hand and stomped her feet on the ground a few times.

Xu's father said helplessly, "Dad, please stop teasing her."

Xu Qingqing pulled Grandma Xu to sit on a chair, and the family finished dinner chatting and laughing.

Night was falling.

Xu Qingqing tiptoed to the backyard, passing through room after room. She walked alone in the dark and quiet place. If she wasn't worried that Lin Meijiao would do something desperate, she would never have acted at night.

I dared not glance around, afraid that I might see something bad and cause a disaster. I suppressed my fear and cursed my damned friend in my heart. If she hadn't insisted on dragging me to watch a horror movie, I wouldn't be so scared.

Finally arriving at the location, Xu Qingqing breathed a sigh of relief, found the mechanism in the novel that opened the hidden door, and twisted it hard. The artificial hill in the middle of the backyard moved outward little by little, revealing a step leading down.

Walking down the steps, it took less than a minute to reach the bottom. The flashlight shone on the ten large boxes, and Xu Qingqing opened them one by one. Apart from porcelain, ancient paintings and books, the gold and jewelry had long been donated by the Xu family, leaving only these.

After storing the ten boxes in her spatial storage, Xu Qingqing returned to her room, lay on the bed, and let out a long sigh of relief. In this way, as long as they could deal with the overseas letter from Xu's father, the Xu family could temporarily escape this calamity.

Lin Meijiao has lost her magic touch; she can forget about reaching the heights depicted in the book.

Xu Qingqing thought of that letter from overseas again. The letter didn't explain in detail, only saying that Xu's father was colluding with overseas entities.

On the other side, Lin Meijiao lay in bed, her heart filled with hatred for that father and daughter. In her previous life, it was because Xu Qingqing was unwilling to go to the countryside that she was forced to take her place, which led to her miserable life.

Thinking of the man who was originally hers, who was ultimately taken away by Xu Qingqing, Lin Meijiao could no longer bear the anger in her heart. Suddenly, she thought of something and couldn't help but feel happy. This time, she was determined to make the Xu family atone for her sins in her past life.

The next morning, before dawn, Lin Meijiao took an anonymous letter and stuffed it into the mailbox, then turned and hid in a secluded corner where the mailbox was still visible.

He saw the letter being taken inside, and soon after, he saw a group of people coming out and heading towards the Xu family's old house. He couldn't help but smile and returned home in a good mood.

Seeing Lin Meijiao return from outside so early, still looking happy, Bai Xiaolian casually asked, "Where did you go so early this morning? What made you so happy?"

Lin Meijiao: "It's nothing, I just heard some good news and I'm in a good mood."

She didn't plan to tell her mother about reporting the Xu family; no one else would know that she was the one who reported them.

Xu Qingqing never imagined that because she angered Lin Meijiao, the time for reporting Xu's father was brought forward, which put her in a passive position now.

As the Revolutionary Committee members kicked open the gate and swaggered in, the leader looked the Xu family over, a glint of shrewdness flashing in his eyes. He had long coveted the Xu family's old house, but had never had the opportunity. This time, he had to thank the informant, because it gave him a reason to search the Xu family.

He didn't believe the Xu family wouldn't be secretly hoarding some valuable items.

"Zhao Haizhong! What are you doing here at my Xu family with a group of people?" Xu's father's face darkened, and his bad intuition grew stronger.

The man, Zhao Haizhong, held up the letter of complaint with a malicious look on his face: "I received a letter of complaint that someone in the Xu family has correspondence with people overseas."

Xu's father looked grim; he hadn't expected anyone to know about that letter.

Zhao Haizhong gestured to the people behind him, "Check carefully, don't overlook anything suspicious."

"stop!"

Xu Qingqing sneered: "Director Zhao is in such a hurry. Putting aside whether our Xu family has this letter or not, you brought so many people and secretly put whatever you wanted in our Xu family. Our Xu family is not being wronged."

“My Xu family is full of loyal martyrs. Look closely at this wall and you will see the sacrifices my Xu family made for China. Each of them has the blood of dozens of invaders on their hands.”

Xu Qingqing pointed to the wall covered with the names of the Xu family members, and seeing Zhao Haizhong's gloomy face, she continued, "If Director Zhao continues to insult my Xu family, then I will go to Beijing to find the leaders and ask them to clear the Xu family's name."

He, Zhao Haizhong, dares to make a move against the Xu family today; let's see what happens.

I'll make him experience what it's like to eat shit!

Zhao Haizhong glanced at Xu Qingqing. How could he not hear the threat in her words? He said, "Young lady, you're wronging me. I, Zhao Haizhong, only came to the Xu family to search according to procedure after receiving a tip..."

"Let's not beat around the bush, Director Zhao." Xu Qingqing interrupted him and continued, "Everyone knows what kind of person you are. You can search the Xu family, but I have only one request: I must stay with you. You cannot leave my sight alone. Who knows if you will do something underhanded behind my back?"

Having no other choice, Zhao Haizhong had to agree to Xu Qingqing's request. Now he only hoped that what was said in the letter was true. Once he found that letter, he would let the Xu family know the methods he, Zhao Haizhong, used.

Suppressing his unease, Mr. Xu tried to show no sign of anything amiss. It seemed the Xu family was doomed this time. To prevent Xu Qingqing from being implicated, Mr. Xu made a difficult decision. Reluctant to look at Xu Qingqing, he knew that only by severing ties could he protect her from being implicated.

Xu Qingqing led the way, pushing open the door of a house and warning, "I don't want anything in my house to be damaged. Watch your hands, or I'll break the fingers of anyone who's dishonest."

Just as everyone was about to rush up and search the area thoroughly, Xu Qingqing's words successfully stopped their plans.
